Rusk Chamber provides surprise retirement party for longtime businesswoman

The Rusk Chamber of Commerce organized a surprise retirement party for Joann Jackson. After more than 70 years operating J&J Jewelry, a jewelry and gifts store, Jackson has decided to close the business and retire. The final day of store operation will be Saturday, May 31. Chamber Chair Kelli Dover organized the party. Chamber members, friends and family members attended the event which was a pleasant moment for Jackson. 'This is too much of a surprise,' she said. 'I appreciate everybody.' After refreshments were brought in and set up, Dover presented a proclamation on behalf of the chamber. It recounted the 1954 opening of Henry's Jewelers with Jackson's first husband Earl Henry and her commitment to continue the business after his passing in 1970. The document noted her second marriage to Joe Jackson, the change in the store name to J&J Jewelry and the many attributes that made her business such a lasting success. 'Her unwavering faith, tireless work ethic and enduring lover for her family, customers and community have been an inspiration to all who know her,' stated the proclamation. A proclamation by Rusk Mayor Ben Middlebrooks named May 31, 2025 as Joann Jackson Day. It, too, mentioned Jackson's history regarding the store and her contributions to the community. 'Joann became known far and wide for her exceptional customer service, offering free engraving and gift wrapping, ordering special items for her customers and treating each person with dignity and kindness, regardless of the size of their purchase,' stated Middlebrook's proclamation. Carlton Cruthers read a poem he wrote for the occasion and Michele Slaton presented a certificate from Senator Robert Nichols recognizing Jackson's 70 years of business. When asked about retirement, Jackson said, 'We started in 1954 and I am 91 years old and I think I'm going home to rest.' She said her family had been asking her to retire for the past 15 years. She said she will miss the people most. Her plans for retirement include volunteering at the Heritage Center of Cherokee County, starting a once a month Bible study at her church and visiting relatives. 'I have relatives I've not been able to visit, being in business, so I'll have time to visit my family – grandkids and great grandkids,' Jackson said. Although it doesn't officially begin until June 1, Jackson said she is already enjoying the idea of retirement.
