SIMMONS: Wanna bet that Vegas is the landing spot for Mitch Marner?
Article content At first glance, the Golden Knights don't appear to have the cap space available to work in Marner's favour. But this is where George McPhee and Kelly McCrimmon, the club president and general manager, enter the process, already having earned a reputation for making the financially impossible possible. They have a history of doing what other teams can't do or won't do. Article content The future of star defenceman Pietrangelo already is in question regarding the Golden Knights future. There are those in front offices around the NHL who wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Pietrangelo has played his last NHL game — and that the long-term injury relief from the final two years of his $10 million per year contract would put the Knights in position to be able to afford Marner. Article content Pietrangelo, who was named to Canada's 4-Nations Face-Off team and is expected to be part of the coming Olympic team, pulled out of the tournament last February to get himself ready for playoffs. He has missed 29 games over the past two seasons to injury and was thought to be playing hurt in the playoffs. He turns 36 next season. Article content What can the Leafs get for Marner in a sign-and-trade of sorts? Next to nothing, I am told. Article content They might be able to get a third- or fourth-round draft pick by dealing his rights before July 1, but the question remains: Is it worth doing a possible sign-and-trade for Marner's benefit, doing him a favour, giving him an extra year on his contract if negotiated that way, when there is next to no benefit for the Leafs themselves? Article content This is part of the equation that remains hard to figure and the relationships between the Marner camp and the Leafs has been rather prickly at times. Marner negotiated a no-movement clause with the Leafs with the previous general manager, was later seemingly unhappy about how he was being treated in the market and how he was being singled out for Maple Leafs blame. Article content And yet, when the Leafs provided him with the opportunity to leave and play elsewhere, on a contender in Carolina, he said no, he wouldn't consider it. This was Marner playing both sides against the middle, which has worked in his favour, but not necessarily for the Leafs. Article content Article content If he hits free agency, there is little doubt that young hopeful teams such as San Jose, Columbus, Chicago and Anaheim — all with money to spend — will be bidding on Marner. And others — maybe Utah, maybe Detroit, maybe Pittsburgh — will be in the process as well. And probably a semi-contender like Los Angeles might get involved, as would Tampa Bay, where coach Jon Cooper is a huge Marner fan.

Golden Knights Reportedly In Two-Team Race For KHL Star Forward
With the team pressed to the salary cap, Vegas Golden Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon continues to find unique ways to add skilled forwards to his lineup and could be doing so again with KHL star Maxim Shabanov. According to a report by Marco D'Amico of RG Media, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Golden Knights are in a "two-horse race" to sign KHL star forward Shabanov. The 24-year-old forward was dominant with Traktor Chelyabinsk, scoring 23 goals and 67 points in 65 games, ranking third in points among all players in the KHL. Although he's considered undersized, listed at just 5'8, 157 lbs, it hasn't affected his ability to create offence, displaying his skill set during the playoffs, recording 10 goals and 20 points in 21 games, losing in the Gagarin Cup finals. Shabanov, this year's big little KHL free agent has finished his KHL fight to sign him to an NHL deal starts today (it likely started last year, but shhhh.) — Jack Manning (@NHLJackManning) May 21, 2025 'Maybe I'll think about it, maybe not. I've said before that all my thoughts were focused on having a successful season with Traktor. I don't read what people write about me or listen to what they say,' Shabanov commented before the final. Across four seasons in the KHL, Shabanov registered 67 goals and 150 points in 207 games. With Russian forwards Ivan Barbashev and Pavel Dorofeyev on the Golden Knights roster, they could be a factor in swaying Shabanov to sign with the Golden Knights. Golden Knights head into offseason hoping to reach an extension with Jack Eichel
LAS VEGAS (AP) — As the Golden Knights absorb being knocked out in the second round of the NHL playoffs by Edmonton, they don't have to wait long before planning for their future. Jack Eichel, who has one season left on his eight-year, $80 million contract, is eligible for an extension beginning July 1. 'He's one of the top guys in the NHL,' general manager Kelly McCrimmon said. 'He's got great character, great leadership. You see night in, night out what he does for our team, so that will be a really important piece of business for us. We certainly hope to keep Jack in our organization. Jack loves it here, so I would hope we could find common ground.' Eichel, 28, comes off the best season of his 10-year career, the past four seasons with the Golden Knights. He set career highs with 66 assists and 94 points to go with 28 goals as the center on the team's top line. 'Can't say enough about my teammates and the people in this building and the people that make this organization what it is,' Eichel said. 'I'm super proud of to be part of this organization and the city and represent the Vegas Golden Knights. Contractually, I think things kind of take care of itself. I'll just worry about trying to prepare for next season this offseason and go from there.' Management, which is not known for sitting on its hands, will have other significant decisions to make as well on the team's direction after the Golden Knights were eliminated by the second round for the second year in a row. 'I like our team,' coach Bruce Cassidy said. 'I don't have a problem with any player in that room. I think every one of them is a great teammate. They care about one another. Are there areas of our game we could complement better? Probably. We'll evaluate that. 'All the guys that were up, their contracts, they were all good players for us. All good players. No disappointments at all. We'll probably have to look at areas because we're not the last team standing. Usually, you think, 'Where we can we upgrade? Where can I upgrade what I do?'' McCrimmon offered a similar assessment. 'I feel our team was good enough to win,' McCrimmon said. The Golden Knights won the Stanley Cup two years ago and thought they had another contender this season after capturing the Pacific Division and securing the Western Conference's second-best record. But Vegas had to rally from a 2-1 series deficit to beat Minnesota in the opening round, winning twice in overtime. Then the Golden Knights lost two OT games in the 4-1 series loss to the Oilers. 'I didn't walk away from Edmonton saying, 'We had no chance. They're just better,'' Cassidy said. 'I didn't feel that way. I felt we needed to execute better in a few of the games and we could be the team moving on.' Forward William Karlsson said losing to the Oilers made it 'a wasted season.' McCrimmon wasn't as blunt, instead labeling the loss as 'a missed opportunity.' Change will come, but at least given the tenor of the comments by Cassidy and McCrimmon, the Golden Knights will largely return their roster intact next season. 'I think we have a great organization,' goalie Adin Hill said. 'Best management I've been under. I think they're going to do the things that they see fit for (the) roster, whether it's keeping it the same or whether it's changing up a few things. I don't know. That's their decision, above my paygrade, but it will be exciting to see. We know that we're going to be contenders every year.' Forward Reilly Smith made it clear he wants to return. An original Golden Knight, Smith was traded to Pittsburgh after winning the Cup and then sent to the New York Rangers a year later. The Golden Knights reacquired the 34-year-old on March 6. Smith made a smooth transition back into the lineup with three goals and eight assists in 21 games. Then he delivered the play of the postseason for the Golden Knights, scoring with 0.4 seconds left to beat Edmonton in Game 3, and finished with three goals and an assist in 11 playoff games. 'Probably the best hockey I've played in my career has been wearing this jersey,' Smith said. 'It's a fun group to be a part of and a fun place to call home. My family loves it here, so if there's a way to make it work, it'd be great. At the end of the day, it's a business. My contract negotiations, I probably know as little as you (media) do right now.' ___ AP NHL playoffs: and
