Forum: Do more to nurture track and field athletes
As a parent of four, I am eager to nurture my children's passion for athletics. To support Singaporean athletes, there are some ways in which I think our training facilities and infrastructure can be improved.
While Singapore's tropical heat may build endurance, it can also be punishing without proper shelter. The Home of Athletics facility, for instance, could have more shaded areas for warm-ups and recovery, and better hydration facilities to protect athletes from extreme heat.
Our stadiums could also be reimagined as green athletic hubs, integrating next-generation solar panels that both generate clean energy and help cool training spaces. This would make facilities both sustainable and athlete-friendly.
We could also do more to help those with the potential to compete at the highest level. Investing in centres of training excellence, equipped with artificial intelligence tools for analysis, could help refine technique and performance, and provide personalised feedback on form, pacing and throw distances. Such innovation could sharpen our competitive edge.
If we aspire to produce world-class athletes, we must build the right foundation with better facilities, smarter training and forward-looking strategies.
