The University of Texas said Sims died on March 21 at his home. Sims' death came after a brief illness, according to the National Football Foundation, but no further information was provided. He became a National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Famer in 2021. A Kosse, Texas, native, Sims shined as a defensive tackle for Texas from 1978 to 1981 and was an AP All-American selection in 1980 and 1981. He was an unanimous All-American pick in 1981, the same season that the Longhorns finished 10-1-1, beat Alabama in the Cotton Bowl, and finished ranked No. 2 in the final AP poll. His efforts helped him become the first Longhorns player to receive the Lombardi Award, given to the nation's best collegiate lineman, in 1981. Sims was selected with the top pick in the 1982 NFL draft by the New England Patriots. He was selected to the 1982 all-rookie team and spent his entire career in New England, but had trouble duplicating the production he had at the collegiate level. His best NFL season was in 1985 when he had 5 1/2 sacks in 13 games, helping the Patriots reach Super Bowl 20, where they lost to the Chicago Bears. As a senior with the Longhorns, Sims was the leading vote-getter for the Heisman Trophy among defensive players in 1981. He earned the Lombardi Award, given to the top lineman in college football, and was named the UPI Lineman of the Year. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in the Class of 2021. remembered Sims' accomplishments over four seasons: He was an impact performer at the heart of the Longhorns' defensive line for four seasons. In that time, the 6-6, 265-pound tackle recorded 322 tackles, 29 sacks, 50 tackles for loss, 15 forced fumbles, seven fumble recoveries and three blocked kicks. After playing behind now-fellow College Football Hall of Famer Steve McMichael during his first two seasons, Sims shined as a starter in the 1980 and 1981 campaigns, posting 241 tackles, 21 sacks, 40 tackles for loss, 11 forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries in that time. Sims' 15 career forced fumbles still stand as the most by a player in a school history, while his 29 sacks (fourth) and seven fumble recoveries (fifth) both rank among the top five among Longhorns all-time. His 50 career tackles for loss are ninth-best in school history. He was drafted first overall by the Patriots but his NFL career was limited to one full season over eight years due to injuries. Sims had 17 sacks in 74 games. When New England went to Super Bowl after the 1985 season he missed the game after breaking a leg during the season.

Former New England Patriots No. 1 overall pick Kenneth Sims died on Friday at the age of 65. Sims had been battling illness and died in his sleep, per 247sports. Sims, who was the first pick in the 1982 NFL Draft, played eight years in the NFL, all with the Patriots. Across 74 career games, Sims recorded 17 sacks. Throughout his NFL career, Sims dealt with numerous injuries. The only season in which he played in every game was 1984. The defensive end underwent back surgery in 1987, which limited him to 12 games. The following season, in 1988, he ruptured his Achilles tendon and played in just one game. Sims played 15 games in 1989 before a knee injury sidelined him for the last game, and he then retired. When Sims was drafted in 1982, he became the third Texas Longhorn to be chosen with the top pick. After Sims backed up future Pro Football Hall of Famers Steve McMichael and Bill Acker during his sophomore season at Texas, he burst onto the scene in his junior season. Sims recorded 131 tackles and was named All-Southwest Conference and an All-American. As a senior, Sims was named All-Southwest Conference and an All-American again, in addition to being the first Texas Longhorn to ever win the Lombardi Award. The Lombardi Award is given to the college football lineman who best exemplifies legendary NFL head coach Vince Lombardi, focusing on character, discipline and excellence. Also in his senior year, Sims was the top defensive vote-getter for the Heisman Trophy after having helped Texas to a 10-1-1 record and a Cotton Bowl win in 1982. During his collegiate career, Sims had 322 tackles, 29 sacks, 50 tackles for loss, 15 forced fumbles, seven fumble recoveries and three blocked kicks. Kenneth Sims, the No. 1 overall pick in the 1982 NFL Draft and a Texas Longhorns legend, died in his sleep Friday at the age of 65 after battling an illness, according to Chip Brown of 247Sports and a release on social media later by the New England Patriots. Sims, a native of Groesbeck, Texas, played defensive tackle at the University of Texas from 1978 to 1981. He began his career backing up Pro Football Hall of Famer Steve McMichael and Bill Acker before emerging as a dominant force in his junior and senior seasons. In 1980, Sims recorded 131 tackles, earning All-Southwest Conference and consensus All-America honors. A year later, he became the first Longhorn to win the Lombardi Award, presented annually to the nation's best lineman. Sims also finished as the top defensive vote-getter for the Heisman Trophy that year, was named team MVP in both 1980 and 1981, and served as a team co-captain his senior season. The New England Patriots selected Sims with the first overall pick in the 1982 NFL Draft, a class that also featured Jim McMahon, Mike Munchak, Marcus Allen and Morten Andersen. Sims was fifth in voting for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and went on to play eight seasons with the Patriots. Sims was inducted into the Longhorn Hall of Honor in 1997.
