2 adults, 2 children displaced after house fire in Rosamond: KCFD
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A house fire in Rosamond left two adults and two children displaced on Saturday, according to the Kern County Fire Department. On May 24 at about 4:40 p.m., Kern County firefighters responded to a report of a house fire in the 6200 block of Sweetser Road, Rosamond. A large column of smoke was seen by firefighters and captured by an ALERTCalifornia fire camera, the fire department said. Objects around the house — such as vehicles, trees, farm equipment, outbuildings and yard clutter — were ignited by desert winds and created 'a 360-degree firestorm around the home,' according to KCFD. Wildfire precautions saved this man's home from disaster A search of the home found one unharmed dog, and the dog was returned to her owners, officials said. According to KCFD, the fire left two adults and two children displaced. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is still unknown. KCFD announces new Firehawk helicopters
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Kern County Fire Department is getting some impressive new equipment to help fight fires from the air. The department recently announced two Firehawk Helicopters that will be added to the fleet at a later date. United Rotorcraft will continue a partnership with KCFD and supply the two choppers. Democrat Fire burns at least 1,000 acres in Kern River canyon, Hwy 178 closed The Firehawks are transformed from Blackhawk helicopters into highly capable firefighting aircrafts through the U.S. Army Surplus program. They include enhancements like United Rotorcraft's exclusive landing gear, a 1,000 gallon tank for precise water drops and advanced avionics to improve situational awareness. Highway 178 reopens with fire at 50% containment
Highway 178 reopened Monday night after being closed for a day as crews worked to contain a brush fire in the Kern River Canyon. The 895-acre Democrat Fire was 50% contained Tuesday afternoon, according to Sequoia National Forest spokesperson Amy Masi. "Fire is still staffed 24 hours," Masi said in a text message. "Forward rate of spread has been stopped." The Democrat Fire started at about 3:30 p.m. Sunday about a mile north of the Upper Richbar picnic area along Highway 178 and grew to 895 acres, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or CalFire. Crews from the U.S. Forest Service and Kern County Fire Department had the fire 30% contained by Monday afternoon. Highway 178 reopened at 10 p.m. Monday night, according to the California Highway Patrol's Bakersfield office, and was closed again for maintenance in the early morning Tuesday. Kern County Fire Department spokesperson Jon Drucker previously told The Californian crews had initially responded to a call of a vehicle accident on Highway 178 but found no evidence of a crash. The cause of the fire will be investigated by the U.S. Forest Service.

(KGET) — The Kern County Fire Department is scheduled to conduct a public safety burn near Highway 223 Thursday evening. The burn is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. near Highway 223 between Highway 58 and Arvin, according to KCFD officials. The burn is scheduled to be completed by Thursday afternoon. The prescribed safety burn is dependent on weather and emergency activity levels in Kern County. Officials said the roadway is scheduled to be closed during the time of the prescribed burn. A prescribed burn is a prescription to treat an area through the reduction of vegetation. You may see or smell smoke.
