Malkangiri cops arrest 2 Maoists after exchange of fire

Koraput: Malkangiri police on Friday arrested two hardcore Maoists from a forested area near the Odisha-Chhattisgarh border following an exchange of fire. A large cache of arms, ammunition and Maoist materials were seized during the operation.
The arrested Maoists have been identified as Kesaka Wasi, a member of the Kangerghati area committee and a resident of Chandametta Patalpara under Darba police station limits in Chhattisgarh, and Sanu Kunjam, also an ACM (area committee member), affiliated to the AOB military platoon section-01. He hails from Tamod village under Ganglur police station limits in the neighbouring state, police said.
"We had specific intelligence inputs regarding the movement of a Maoist group in the forest areas of Sodiguda and Tenguliguda villages.
Based on the tip-off, a joint combing operation was launched by the security forces on the intervening night of June 12 and 13," said Vinod Patil, SP of Malkangiri.
Patil said the police team spotted a group of armed Maoists during the early hours of Friday. "When our personnel challenged them to surrender, the Maoists opened fire. Our forces responded in a controlled manner and returned fire in self-defence. During the search operation that followed, two Maoists were apprehended while hiding in nearby bushes.

However, several others managed to flee under the cover of darkness," he said.
During interrogation, Wasi confessed to having joined the Maoistst in 2010 at the age of 17. Kunjam joined the banned outfit in 2009 when he was just 14.
"They were involved in numerous high-profile Maoist operations, including ambushes, camp attacks and vehicle torching incidents that resulted in casualties on both sides. The arrested cadres are wanted in more than 20 cases in Malkangiri and Koraput districts.
The charges include provisions under IPC, Arms Act, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and Explosive Substances Act," the SP added.
Police seized a pistol, 6 rounds of ammunition, 10 electric detonators, a radio set, walkie-talkie and a substantial amount of Maoist belongings from the site.
"Further investigation and interrogation are underway to uncover their broader network and future plans," Patil said.
