Top 10 finish for Armstrong and Byrne in Scandinavia
Taking the final top 10 spot in the BAUHAUS Royal Rally of Scandinavia, round three of the European Rally Championship, the Irish pairing of Jon Armstrong/Shane Byrne (Ford Fiesta Rally2) had the satisfaction of knowing that they have the pace, if not the luck, to mount a strong challenge for victory in one of remaining five round of the series. They were third fastest through the Power Stage (final stage) where they annexed three extra championship points. At the finish, the Kesh driver spoke about his final stage performance, where rain made it difficult. "I had a messy run through, a bit of understeer in the first corners. I clipped something in the fast section so I was a bit careful there." "It was a frustrating weekend, we had some good pace." He also took time to reflect on last week's Jim Clark Rally (Scotland) and the Cavan Rally. "We had some tough events last weekend at home, especially James (Williams) and Dai (Roberts, who was fatally injured), also my old co-driver Brian Hoy, who had a bad accident." (Hoy and his driver Garry Jennings were both injured in an accident during the Cavan Rally). Norway's Eyvind Brynildsen was a first-time winner in a round of the series as his Pirelli-shod Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 finished 4.9s in front of the MRF Tyres Toyota GR Yaris of Finland's Roope Korhonen, who snatched the runner-up spot from local hero Isak Reiersen (Skoda Fabia RC Rally2), who was Brynildsen's closest challenger until the final stage. Indeed, the 21-year-old was only 2.8s behind with three stages remaining. Both Reiersen and Brynildsen putting their cars on two wheels on a left-hand corner on SS15. Korhonen tops the overall championship standings. Meanwhile, Tyrone's Jason Mitchell (Skoda Fabia RS Rally2) made it three wins from three outings in the Sligo Pallets Irish Forest Rally Championship, his latest, in Saturday's Mayo Forest Rally, to move into the lead of the eight-round series. He secured a commanding 20.6s victory over the Ford Fiesta Rally2 of Waterford's Andrew Purcell, who fended off the final stage challenge of Tyrone's Niall McGonigle (VW Polo GTi R5) by a mere 0.6s. Despite a few moments, Purcell set the pace on the opening stage where top seed Mitchell was only 0.4s behind with McGonigle a further 1.7s shy of second spot. The majority of the entry received a notional time for SS2 as Mitchell posted the fastest time through SS3 to impose his authority on the event with a 10.6s advantage. Purcell lost time when he clipped a chicane and although McGonigle reckoned he too lost time, he was only 1.7s further behind in third. Tyrone's Stephen Dickson (Ford Fiesta Rally2) was fourth but struggled to get into rhythm. Reigning champion Monaghan's Derek Mackarel lost time when his Ford Fiesta R5 cut out as he approached a chicane on the third stage, he was unhappy with his choice of a hard compound tyre. On the repeat loop, Mitchell was able to manage his lead and with a trio of stage wins, took a fine victory. Purcell just about withstood McGonigle's late surge to claim valuable points to keep his title hopes on track. Dickson, Mackarel and Pete McCullagh (Mitsubishi Lancer E9) completed the top six. Elsewhere, Donegal's Damien Tourish (Ford Escort) in ninth place, was the top two-wheel drive finisher. In the J1000 category, Donegal's James McShea (VW UP) capitalised on the final stage retirement of long-time leader Cavan's Danny Brady, also in a VW UP. The entry list for the Donegal International Rally (June 20/22) was announced on Friday evening last. With the withdrawal of Kris Meeke on Thursday, the revised top ten is: 1. Reigning champions Josh Moffett and Andy Hayes claim victory at Cavan Rally
Reigning national champions Josh Moffett and his Wexford co-driver Andy Hayes took a start to finish victory in the Cavan Rally, the third round of the Triton Showers National Rally Championship. Another of the Moffett siblings, Sam (Hyundai i20 N Rally2), who was co-driven by Killarney's Shane Buckley, finished 18.2s behind after they edged out the Donegal duo of Kevin Eves/Chris Melly (Ford Fiesta Rally2) by 3.7s on the final stage. Changeable weather conditions made it difficult as Josh Moffett coped best and with a trio of fastest times on the first loop, he led Sam by 15.7s with Eves, with one of his best performances since switching to Rally2, just two seconds further behind in third. Kilkenny's Eddie Doherty had a huge moment over a jump on the opening stage (where Sam Moffett also had a similar moment), a spin on the second stage and a time loss on SS3, saw him down in fifth - 24.3s off top spot. Michael Boyle was the first major retirement when his Skoda Fabia Rally2 slid off and crashed into a tree during the opening stage. The stage interruption rule was implemented on SS4 when the services were called to the assistance of Kesh driver Garry Jennings and his co-driver Brian Hoy when their Ford Fiesta Rally2 crashed heavily. Meanwhile, the top three of Josh and Sam Moffett and Eves each took a stage win as Josh led the family battle by 19.1s. Rain showers continued to make tyre choice a lottery and while Josh Moffett maintained a good lead, his brother Sam lost second place to a charging Eves, who entered the final stage just 1.4s ahead of his rival, who was determined to regain second and win the Power Stage to reduce his brother's haul of championship points, he managed to achieve both. Barrable and Doherty (who retains the lead of the series - three points ahead of Sam Moffett) completed the top five. In the Maiden City rally in Derry, Strabane's Ryan Caldwell (Skoda Fabia RS Rally2) took a 5.9s victory over the Ford Fiesta Rally2 of Kesh driver Garry Jennings with Donegal's David Kelly (VW Polo GTi), who led for two stages, finishing 9.2s further behind in third. In wet conditions, Caldwell led Jennings by 1.2s on the first stage where Kelly was 2.3s off top spot in third. With a stage win on SS2 and despite issues with the wipers on SS3, Kelly led Jennings by 3.9s as Caldwell slipped to third - 5.7s off the lead. However, Caldwell was back in the lead after SS4, the second running of Bigwood, where he excelled once more, taking 5.1s out of Jennings to lead by 3.3s as the latter made some set-up changes. Kelly (third) had an overshoot. The top three order remained unchanged to the finish as Caldwell netted his first victory on tarmac surface. Donegal's Michael Boyle, debuting the Skoda Fabia RS Rally previously campaigned by his father Declan, was fourth with top seed Desi Henry, who switched to a Ford Fiesta Rally2, took a stage win on his way to fifth. Sadly, the Jim Clark Rally in Scotland was curtailed following a tragic accident on Saturday's second stage (SS8) that claimed the life of Welsh co-driver Dai Roberts. The organisers cancelled the remaining stages of the event (Round three of the British Rally Championship) and also the Reivers Rally that was scheduled to take place yesterday (Sunday). The 39 year old co-driver, whose brother Gareth (Jaffa) passed away in an accident at the 2012 Targa Florio Rally in Sicily, was co-driving for fellow Welshman James Williams (Hyundai i20 rally2) when they crashed on the first run of the Edrom stage. Williams was taken by ambulance to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh with serious but not life-threatening injuries. In motor racing, Offaly's Alex Dunne crashed out of the F2 feature race in Monaco on Sunday morning. Starting in pole position Victor Martins raced into the lead as they headed into Turn 1. As Martins turned the first corner, the front of Dunne's car speared into the side of his Martins' car that resulted in both spinning into the outside barrier. Some nine other drivers were caught in the ensuing pile up and the race was red flagged. Seven drivers including Dunne and Martins were forced to retire. When the race re-started, Jak Crawford took the chequered flag. The event stewards gave Dunne a grid penalty of ten places on qualifying at next week's Spanish Grand Prix. Meanwhile, Cork driver Robert Cronin secured his maiden victory in the Protyre Motorsport Ginetta Championship at Oulton Park on Saturday afternoon. The Ballylickey driver, who started from P2 in his Elite Motorsport run Ginetta was quickly into the lead, edging out polesitter Jack Collins just before the first corner and went on to take the chequered flag as Cronin's team mate Harry Gamble took second place with a brave move on the final lap. Armstrong and Byrne recover to secure tenth place at European Rally Championship
Fighting back from a double puncture on Saturday's leg that relegated the Irish crew of Jon Armstrong and Shane Byrne to 25th position, the pair made a spirited recovery to claim 10th place in Rally Hungary, the second round of the European Rally Championship. Armstrong was denied victory and the maximum five points by fellow Irish driver Philip Allen (Skoda Fabia Rally2) who won the Power Stage by 1.9s. The event was won by Finland's Roope Korhonen (Toyotas GR Yaris Rally2) on what was his maiden ERC outing and also his first international rally win as he finished 30.1s ahead of the Citroen C3 Rally2 of Norway's Mads Ostberg. Italian ace Andrea Mabellini (Skoda Fabia RS Rally2) forged ahead on Saturday morning's first stage with Armstrong just 3.9s behind in second and although he slipped to third after the morning loop, Armstrong was only 10.6s off top spot. Mabellini and Armstrong had identical times on SS5 but the Kesh driver's Ford Fiesta Rally2 collected two punctures on the day's penultimate stage. 'The first puncture was in a rough section but then the second one we were stuck in dust and going slowly and I don't even know what happened there.' He added, 'To get two in the one stage is pretty unlucky, it's a big shame as everything was going quite well.' Armstrong finished the stage down in 25th position - six minutes and 11.2s off the lead. He was second quickest on the day's final stage and was 24th overnight. Mabellini ended Saturday's leg (six stages) with a 10.6s advantage over Korhonen with last year's event winner Simone Tempestini (Skoda Fabia RS Rally2) 30.8s off top spot. Beginning his recovery with third fastest times on Sunday's opening pair of stages, Armstrong then lost time with a puncture on SS10. He showed fine pace on the final three stages with a fourth, first and second fastest stage time. "A bit frustrated, we knew we had the pace to be on the podium, but just too many issues along the way. Positive to show the pace on gravel and shows that the Fiesta can do it. Shane (his co-driver) and the whole team have done a great job." Tempestini retired with a broken steering while Mabellini suffered tyre damage before bowing out with a broken damper. Meanwhile, Tyrone's Jason Mitchell (Skoda Fabia Rally2) and his Donegal co-driver Paddy McCrudden survived a huge overshoot on the final stage to win the Mitchelstown based Sean Conlon Memorial Forest Rally, round three of the Sligo Pallets Irish Forest Rally Championship. They finished a mere 3.2s ahead of the Ford Fiesta Rally2 of Waterford's Andrew Purcell and his Blackpool co-driver Liam Brennan. Armagh's Darren Gass (VW Polo GTi R5) and his Scottish co-driver Neil Shanks were 17s. further behind in third. Pre-event series leader and top seed Cashel's Pat O'Connell (Ford Fiesta R5) ended the opening stage down in tenth place after a front left wheel puncture. Purcell (Ford Fiesta Rally2) was the early pacesetter leading Mitchell by 1.3s with Niall McGonigle (Ford Fiesta rally2) 4.3s further behind. Mitchell, with a steady pace was best on SS2 (Kilcoran) to snatch the lead from Purcell, who was 7.4s behind. O'Connell won the third and final stage of the loop (Kilworth) and slotted into third. The hanging dust was a problem for Purcell, who was lucky to escape when he was on the wrong line (due to the dust) through a junction. Armagh's Darren Gass in an ex-Hayden Paddon VW Polo GTi R5 was on his first Irish gravel event in some fifteen years. Fifth placed Niall McGonigle burst two dampers on the second stage and has his Ford Fiesta Rally2 on two wheels at a hairpin but retrieved the situation. Reigning national champion Derek Mackarel lost time when the power steering of his Fiesta R5 cut out on the second, he was 34.8s off the lead. Entering the final stage there was only 9.9s between Mitchell and Purcell. Mitchell had his overshoot drama as the hanging dust posed a problem with only a minute interval between the top crews. O'Connell posted the stage win but McGonigle crashed and the stage interruption rule was applied to the remaining cars. Rally Hungary (Round 2, European Rally Championship): 1.
