The summary for the movie reads, 'In Clown in a Cornfield, Quinn (Katie Douglas) and her father (Aaron Abrams) have just moved to the quiet town of Kettle Springs, hoping for a fresh start. Instead, she discovers a fractured community that has fallen on hard times after the treasured Baypen Corn Syrup Factory burned down. 'As the locals bicker amongst themselves and tensions boil over, a sinister, grinning figure emerges from the cornfields to cleanse the town of its burdens, one bloody victim at a time. Welcome to Kettle Springs. The real fun starts when Frendo the Clown comes out to play.' Clown in a Cornfield is based on Adam Cesare's book of the same name. Naturally, with the word 'clown' in the title of Clown in a Cornfield, Eli Craig knew that it would make fans think of the murderous Art the Clown from director Damien Leone's Terrifier horror hits. As such, Craig made a conscious decision to avoid the unrated horror and gore route of Leone's movies by trusting his own instincts by creating a line that he — and Frendo the Clown — should not cross. 'My gut is the line and sometimes I go to the point where I feel like I'm testing my own gut, where I can't really watch something myself,' Craig said in a Zoom conversation prior to the release of Clown in a Cornfield. "With Terrifier 3, I had to watch the film in little segments to study it and I realized, 'Oh wow, Damien Leone is a master.' I wanted to look at how he was doing in-camera special effects. [At the same time] I had to disassociate what I was seeing to process it. I had to think about the process of how he did stuff so I wouldn't puke.' However, Craig, added, he made sure to take full advantage of what an R rating allowed. 'I feel like I've hit the mark where most people are going to go, 'Ooh!' and start turning away, but then I'm done,' Craig explained. 'I have these moments that may be a little shocking, but there's just a touch of humor in it as well that makes it tolerable. 'I want to have the kills be quite real and a little bit shocking, gritty and brutal, but also have a touch of playfulness to them,' Craig added. 'They're not brutal to the point of being sickening, though. That's the line for me. I'm not interested in making a sickening movie. I want to make a fun movie that has kills in it.' Clown in a Cornfield has earned $7.2 million in domestic ticket sales and more than $532,000 internationally for a worldwide box office gross of $7.7 million to date. Craig said the production budget for the film was 'significantly less' than $10 million. The film also earned a 74% 'fresh' rating from Rotten Tomatoes critics based on 136 reviews, while audiences gave it a 59% 'rotten' score on RT's Popcornmeter based on 500-plus verified user ratings. Clown in a Cornfield arrives on PVOD on Tuesday.

Review: CLOWN IN A CORNFIELD is a Surprisingly Great Slasher Film! — GeekTyrant
I walked into Clown in a Cornfield hoping for the same mischievous energy that director Eli Craig poured into Tucker & Dale vs. Evil . What I got was that and more with a fast, funny, and genuinely tense slasher that treats its clown gimmick as a springboard rather than a crutch. Right from the opening shot of cornstalks rustling under the moon during a teen party in the 90s, Craig announces that the ride will be playful, but he never forgets to keep the blade sharp. The story picks up as Quinn Maybrook and her dad arrive in Kettle Springs, a town half‑frozen in nostalgia after its corn‑syrup factory went up in smoke. Adults pine for 'the good old days,' teens livestream pranks and count the days until they can bail. 'You can feel that resentment humming under every friendly wave, and Craig uses it to wind the tension like a spitfire carnival barker cranking a jack‑in‑the‑box. That culture clash is the movie's real fuel, and Craig stages it like a county‑fair tug‑of‑war where both sides keep slipping in the mud. It's lean storytelling and no scene overstays its welcome, and every grumble between generations tightens the coil before things explode. Enter Frendo, the factory's grinning clown mascot, now stalking the fields and a mission to trim the 'rotten crop' of kids before the town rots for good. Each kill arrives with punch‑line timing followed by a grim sting, as if the movie winks at you right before shoving you off the hayride. Craig lets the kills hit hard without wallowing in them. The film nods to late‑'70s through '90s slashers and while it's self‑aware, it never feels like karaoke. Instead, it treats the genre's greatest hits as a playlist to remix. What surprised me most was the heart beating beneath the splatter. Quinn (Katie Douglas) is a teen exhausted by adults who talk without listening. Carson MacCormac, Aaron Abrams, Will Sasso, and Kevin Durand round out a cast that feels authentically small‑town, tossing barbs one minute and clinging to each other the next. The comedy lands because it's rooted in frustration we all recognize, teen culture versus parental 'make America small again' panic. Is the movie reinventing the the horror slaher film circus? Not really, but it's a riot watching a film that does a great job juggling carnage, commentary, and blood‑soaked camp, and genuine suspense without overstaying their welcome. Clown in a Cornfield begs to be seen with a rowdy crowd, the kind that laughs at one kill and groans at the next. If you've been waiting for a slasher that remembers to have fun without skimping on story, step right up!

How Did Sally Field React To Son's Horror Film ‘Clown In A Cornfield'?
Clown in a Cornfield director Eli Craig — the son of iconic actor Sally Field — is sharing his mom's reaction to his new horror comedy. Clown in a Cornfield, which opened in theaters nationwide on Friday, is an adaptation of author Adam Cesare's Bram Stoker Award-winning young adult novel from 2020. Adapted for the big screen by Craig and Carter Blanchard, Clown in a Cornfield follows teenager Quinn Maybrook (Katie Douglas) and her doctor fatherm Glenn (Aaron Abrams), who move to the farming community of Kettle Springs, Mo., to get a fresh start following the death of Quinn's mother. But, as Quinn soon discovers, Kettle Springs has been a depressed town since its main business, the Baypen Corn Syrup Factory, burned to the ground. In a demented way to alleviate the burden on the shoulders of Kettle Springs, someone is dressing up as Baypen's mascot — Frendo the Clown — and taking out his frustrations by slaughtering its teen residents in a grisly manner, which is not quite the welcome to the town Quinn was expecting. Rated R, the blood-splattered humor and horror fest also stars Kevin Durand, Carson MacCormack and Will Sasso. In a recent Zoom conversation, Eli Craig — who along with his brother, Peter, are the sons of Field and her ex-husband Steven Craig — said he gravitated to a decidedly different film genre than the one his mother is famous as a kid. 'I've always felt a little bit like the black sheep of the family,' Eli Craig said with a huge laugh. 'She's a dramatic actor who treats her work very, very seriously. And some of my work is a little farcical, right? I have a penchant for a bit of farce and humor.' Essentially, Craig — who directed and co-wrote the 2010 horror comedy cult classic Tucker and Dave vs. Evil — said he wants to make movies that don't take themselves too seriously, but his mom likes to stick to her dramatic storytelling convictions. 'Sometimes when I show her my work, she's like, 'I think you should take it more seriously,' and I go, 'But that's not the point, mom. The point is, this is fun first and serious second,' Craig said. Sally Field, of course, is one of Hollywood's most treasured performers. In addition to winning Best Actress Oscars for Norma Rae and Places in the Heart, she's starred in dozens of classic films in her six decades in showbiz, from two Smokey and the Bandit films, Murphy's Romance and Mrs. Doubtfire to Forrest Gump, Lincoln and The Amazing Spider-Man movies. On top of that, Field has had an amazing run on television, starring in such acclaimed series as Gidget, The Flying Nun, ER, Brothers & Sisters and Winning Time: The Rise of The Lakers Dynasty, as well as the legendary miniseries Sybil. Eli Craig said he's paid attention to the inner workings of showbiz throughout his mom's career and it has no doubt influenced his work as a filmmaker — but not in the way you'd expect. 'She's taught me so much about this business, but growing up as her son, it has given me a bit of the freedom to be disestablishment,' Craig said. 'I like to fight against the establishment and be somewhat sardonic and sarcastic about the business. 'Because I grew up in it, I just feel like making fun of everything and film gives me a way to satirize the business and also satirize the human condition in America, specifically right now,' Craig added. "So, I think mom gets a kick out of my films, even if she doesn't fully understand my style.' And what was Field's specific reaction to Clown in a Cornfield? 'She saw a rough cut of it and she said, 'I think you should cut the humor out,'" Craig said, laughing. 'I said, 'Mom, I can't cut the humor out. That's the whole point. I want the humor and horror.' But she said, 'This is the most suspenseful thing you've ever done' and 'Go fully go with the suspense.' I find life to be both humorous and horrific at the same time, so I like to add those elements.' Clown in a Cornfield is playing in theaters nationwide.
