A sudden death investigation is under way after a 39-year-old man who had been attacked by another patient in the psychiatric unit of the Woolloongabba hospital died. Investigators are now trying to work out if the attack itself caused the man's death or if it triggered an underlying medical condition. Questions are also being raised by staff about how the attack was allowed to happen. The 39-year-old died on May 4 but when no public statement was made, staff told 9News they wanted the public to know about the incident. A statement sent on Monday afternoon by Queensland Health said: 'We extend our deepest sympathies to the patient's family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time. 'As this matter is currently the subject of an investigation by the state coroner, it would be inappropriate to provide specific details or further information at this time.' This man's death follows the killing of Kevin Farr, a former Gold Coast police officer, by another patient at Robina Hospital.
