Create Account Deputy Alfredo 'Freddy' Flores died April 20 after enduring third-degree burns across most of his body and a period of medical complications, six months after the fire on Oct. 10, 2023. He was performing a mandatory firearm recertification inside a trailer that serves as a mobile shooting range when it caught on fire at the department's Pitchess Detention Center about 30 miles (48.3 kilometers) north of Los Angeles. Another deputy with him was also seriously injured. Flores was participating in firearms qualification which the department requires deputies to do once a quarter, Sheriff Robert Luna said in October 2023. His family filed a lawsuit suit seeking damages for constitutional violations, negligence and product liability, alleging the fire started because officials failed to properly maintain the mobile gun range. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. The lawsuit alleges the sheriff's department allowed a 'dangerous accumulation of unburned gunpowder residue, lead, propellant, and/or other combustible material' which ignited suddenly to start the fire. According to the lawsuit, there are well-documented prior instances of fires in mobile shooting ranges in California as well as other ranges operated by the LA County Sheriff's Department. There is also 'documentation of violations' by the department related to unsafe practices in the operation and maintenance of its mobile shooting ranges, the suit said. The family is also seeking relief from Inveris Training Solutions, the manufacturer of the trailer. Mobile Inveris shooting ranges are 'defectively designed' and have a high risk of fires from a buildup of the combustible material that isn't properly cleaned and ventilated, the lawsuit said. The suit asks for injunctive relief to stop the county's operations of its mobile gun ranges, compensation for damages as well as civil penalties. Flores was a deputy for 22 years and his assignments included the North County Correctional Facility and Altadena Station. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and two sons.

(AP Photo/Kevork Djansezian) PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts said he will attend next week's World Series championship celebration at the White House after he declined to attend a previous ceremony during President Donald Trump's first term. The Dodgers are set to visit the White House on April 7 before opening a series at the Washington Nationals. Members of the team plan to visit Capitol Hill on April 8. Advertisement Betts, the star outfielder at the time for the 2018 champion Boston Red Sox, did not make that team's trip to the White House the next year. Betts was on the Dodgers when they won the World Series in 2020 and attended the celebration the following year under President Joe Biden. The 32-year-old Betts is the lone Black player on the Dodgers who returned from last season's World Series team. 'Nobody else in this clubhouse has to go through a decision like this except me,' Betts said ahead of Friday's game in Philadelphia. 'That's what makes it tough. But it is what it is. I'm not trying to make this political by any means at all. All it is is just me being with my team to celebrate something. It's a privilege to get an invitation like this. I just want to be there with them.' The Dodgers confirmed in a social media post lasts month that 'in keeping with long-standing baseball tradition,' Trump invited them and they accepted. Advertisement Betts was the 2018 AL MVP with Boston and is an eight-time All-Star over a 12-year career. He said he felt some regret in hindsight about not attending the Red Sox celebration under Trump's first term. 'Me not being there for them at that time was very selfish. Very selfish,' Betts said. 'I would not make that mistake again.' Manager Dave Roberts called it a huge honor that each World Series champion gets to experience. Roberts said deciding to go to the White House was not a formal conversation he and players had. 'It's important for me to be there with them, to be able to look in the mirror at night and know I did what I felt was best for the Dodgers,' Betts said. Advertisement The NHL's reigning Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers became the first team to visit Trump in his second term when they were honored during a ceremony in the East Room in early February. The White House also said recently the NFL's Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles accepted their invitation for April 28. ___ AP MLB:

(AP Photo/Kevork Djansezian) LOS ANGELES (AP) — Freddie Freeman's fall landed him on the injured list. The Los Angeles Dodgers placed their star slugger on the 10-day IL on Thursday after the World Series MVP sprained his surgically repaired right ankle in a slip in the shower at home last weekend. The incident happened Sunday, an off day for the defending champions. Advertisement Freeman described it this week as a 'freak accident' and said his wife, Chelsea, joked: "I thought I was going to deal with this when you're 70, not when you're 35.' Even his 4-year-old son, Brandon, piled on, saying, 'Daddy, you got another boo-boo.' Freeman sprained his right ankle on a play at first base in late September and struggled in the first two rounds of the postseason, but it was hardly evident during the World Series. He homered in the first four games and had 12 RBIs as the Dodgers beat the New York Yankees in five games. He had debridement surgery in December to remove loose bodies in the ankle. His wife had to drive him to Dodger Stadium on Sunday for a three-hour treatment session. By the time it was over, he was able to drive himself home. An X-ray showed no serious damage. Advertisement Freeman is 3 for 12 with two homers in three games this season — his fourth with the Dodgers. An eight-time All-Star, he was National League MVP with Atlanta in 2020. ___ AP MLB:
