Saudi Water Partnership Company (SWPC) becomes official partner for UNESCO World Engineering Day 2025 campaign
London, UK - 11 Mar, 2025 - SWPC, as a leader in providing water security, has been selected as an official partner for UNESCO World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development (WED) 2025, which was launched at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on 4 March 2025. WED is jointly operated by UNESCO and the World Federation for Engineering Organizations (WFEO), which spans some 100 countries and represents more than 30 million engineers. It is an International Day proclaimed by the UNESCO General Conference and open to everyone. The launch in March marks the start of a year-long campaign of events, films and related articles and news, highlighting the achievements of engineers and engineering around the world, and promoting engineering as a career. Produced by the SJH Group – the official media partner and broadcaster for WED – all campaign content, which includes a multimedia hub dedicated to SWPC, is hosted on the WED website at As an official partner, SWPC's insights and expertise will form an integral part of the 12-month campaign, which provides a springboard for governments, UN-associated organisations, policymakers, educators and leaders in the public and private sectors to raise awareness of the importance of engineering. The WED campaign has an estimated global reach of more than 100 million individuals, and this year's theme of 'Shaping our sustainable future through engineering' focuses on the essential role that engineering has to play in achieving the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Shuaiba 3 desal project on track for 2025 commercial operation
Saudi Water Partnership Company (SWPC) has announced that work is moving at a steady pace on the Shuaiba 3 Desalination Plant being set up at an investment of SAR3.07 billion ($821 million) in the kingdom. Doosan Enerbility, a leading South Korean expert in the power and water industry, is the main contractor for the project. On completion, Shuaiba 3 will produce 600,000 cu m of water per day. Recently, it celebrated a major safety milestone at the Shuaiba 3 Desalination Plant project site clocking 10 million safe working hours without injuries. SWPC Chief Executive Officer Khaled Al Qureshi too joined the celebrations and honoured the workers and contributors to the project for the key achievement. He also participated in the celebration of the start of production of potable water. Located in the Shuaibah region of Saudi Arabia, it is one of the most anticipated projects in Saudi Arabia which is under construction. It involves building a reverse osmosis (RO) seawater desalination plant about 110 km south of Jeddah City. A major provider of energy solutions for thermal power, nuclear power and renewable energy, Doosan Enerbility had in 2022 signed a contract with Shuaibah Three Water Desalination Company, a special purpose company established by Acwa Power, for the construction of the plant. The project has Saudi PIF company WHEC (Water and Electricity Holding company) as Acwa's partner. According to SWPC, the development will be undertaken in partnership with the private sector (PPP) under the BOOT (Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer) model.

SWPC hosts pre-bid conference for key Makkah ISTP projects
Saudi Water Partnerships Company (SWPC), in collaboration with the projects advisory consultants, organised the pre-bid conference in Jeddah for its Arana and Hadda ISTP projects. The conference included a site visit to both projects locations in Makkah. A large number of interested local and international companies attended the conference. In the opening remarks, SWPC's CEO, Engineer Khaled AlQureshi, lauded the successful experiences of collaboration with the private sector in developing vital infrastructure projects, including wastewater treatment projects. SWPC team later provided detailed presentations on the two projects and addressed the inquiries of company representatives. The Arana ISTP will be developed with an initial capacity of 250,000 cu m per day, expandable to 500,000 cu m per day while Hadda ISTP will have an initial capacity of 100,000 cu m per day, expandable to 250,000 cu m per day. Both projects will enhance the wastewater treatment capacity serving Makkah city and holy sites, said SWPC in its statement. The projects also encompass treated sewage effluent (TSE) re-use systems, comprising a transmission pipeline and storage tanks to maximize treated sewage utilization, particularly for irrigation across the kingdom, it added. The development will be undertaken in partnership with the private sector (PPP) under the BOOT (Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer) model. This will be implemented through 25-year Sewage Treatment Agreements from the dates of commercial operation, targeted for 2028 for both projects. According to SWPC, the development of these two ISTP projects is aligned with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 and the National Water Strategy 2030 to enhance infrastructure and improve services through expanding sewage treatment capacities and promoting the utilization of treated sewage. -TradeArabia News Service
