Jordan: Agriculture Ministry, International Fertiliser Association discuss environmental sustainability, food security

AMMAN — Minister of Agriculture Khaled Hneifat on Thursday reiterated Jordan's commitment to supporting the transition towards environmentally friendly and sustainable fertiliser production. He also stressed the government's encouragement for national companies to invest in renewable energy and innovation, in line with Jordan's national objectives and ambitious policies for environmental sustainability and enhanced food security, in cooperation with international partners, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Speaking during a meeting with CEO and Director General of the International Fertiliser Association (IFA) Alzbeta Klein, Hneifat highlighted the leading role of the Arab Potash Company (APC) in Jordan's fertiliser industry. The minister, in the presence of APC CEO Maen Nsour, praised the company's contributions to local communities, national projects, and its support for the water-retaining environmental cocoon project, implemented by the Royal Scientific Society for Nature Conservation under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture and in cooperation with the company. Hneifat underscored the vital role played by the IFA as the global voice of the fertiliser industry, particularly in promoting sustainable agricultural practices, encouraging efficient fertiliser use, innovating nutrient management, and providing market information to improve the efficiency of global supply chains. He noted that the Kingdom is a 'key' partner in the global food security ecosystem, owing to its natural resources, particularly the production of potash and phosphate, two essential elements for crop growth and food security. Klein expressed appreciation for Jordan's pivotal role in supporting the global fertiliser industry through its production of phosphate and potash. She commended the APC as a national 'success' story and a key contributor to the global fertiliser sector. She also stressed the importance of the company's active participation in IFA committees and specialised programmes, particularly those focused on sustainability, innovation, and support for start-ups. © Copyright The Jordan Times. The meeting addressed a number of issues of mutual interest, reflecting the 'deep' relations between Jordan and Tatarstan, and mutual keenness on further enhancing cooperation, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Hneifat stressed the importance of enhancing the exchange of farm products, adding that Jordan holds "promising" opportunities for investment in the sector, especially after introducing modern agricultural methods and 'high-quality' crops. He urged strategic partnerships between the public and private sectors in both countries to ensure the flow of goods and increase the trade volume. Hneifat added that the ministry is open to cooperation with partners in Tatarstan in agricultural research, exchange of expertise and launching joint projects to boost food security and promote sustainable development. Minnikhanov commended relations between the two countries, pledging to further boost the partnership with Jordan in various fields, particularly in food security and modern agriculture. Jordan: Agriculture Ministry launches national campaign to support olive sector

AMMAN — Minister of Agriculture Khaled Hneifat on Tuesday launched the National Campaign for the Integrated Management of Olive Trees. Representatives from the plant wealth and agricultural extension sectors, the National Agricultural Research Centre (NARC), and stakeholders in the olive industry participated in the event, held at the ministry headquarters, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Attendees also included representatives from the General Syndicate of Jordanian Olive Oil Mills Owners and Olive Producers, the Jordanian Olive Products Exporters Association (JOPEA), President of the General Union of Jordanian Farmers Odeh Rawashdeh, and President of the Jordan Agricultural Engineers Association Ali Abu Nuqta. The campaign aligns with the Economic Modernisation Vision and the ministry's plan to achieve food security and enhance the competitiveness of national agricultural products, especially olives, considered a 'cornerstone' of Jordan's agricultural economy. It aims to promote the best agricultural and manufacturing practices, as well as climate-smart farming methods, through a series of field schools and training courses across all governorates. The ministry will fund 13 training courses and 19 field schools, with additional schools funded by international organisations, focusing on regions most affected by the olive fruit fly pest. Hneifat stressed that this collaborative campaign will contribute to the sector's development, especially through the vital role of agricultural extension services in delivering campaign messages to farmers through all available channels. He noted that addressing pests and enhancing olive oil quality will positively impact farmers and the national economy. The ministry will also track campaign outcomes and assess their impact on the agricultural sector, particularly the olive industry, which accounts for 72 per cent of Jordan's fruit-bearing trees, the minister noted. Hneifat added that these efforts will be carried out in coordination with the Agricultural Engineers Association, the General Syndicate of Jordanian Olive Oil Mills Owners and Olive Producers and JOPEA. © Copyright The Jordan Times. Jordan: Inauguration of Jordanian-Chinese Agricultural Company

AMMAN — Minister of Agriculture Khaled Hneifat stressed the importance of employing technology and artificial intelligence (AI) in the agricultural sector, which contributes to improving its performance and achieving food security, by keeping pace with the world developments, especially in water-saving technologies that expand production. During the inauguration of the Jordanian-Chinese Agricultural Company, which specialises in modern technologies, Hneifat said that the Kingdom's agricultural exports rose to approximately JD1.5 billion, growing by 6.9 per cent during the past year, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Hneifat noted that the government, under the Economic Modernisation Vision (EMV) and National Plan for Sustainable Agriculture, is "keen" to attract investments in the agricultural sector and address the challenges facing investors in this industry, as part of its efforts to establish Jordan as a "regional centre for food security.' He noted that Jordan has achieved "high rates of self-sufficiency" in many food commodities, mainly vegetables, fruits, meat, poultry, eggs, olive oil and milk products, despite the "significant" increase in population due to refugee crises and decrease in the amount of water available for agriculture. Chairman of Jibreen Group Majd Jibreen said that the Jordanian-Chinese Agricultural Company is the result of a "strategic" partnership with China Green Agriculture, a Jordanian company specialising in modern agricultural technologies, praising the Kingdom's "attractive" investor climate. The company will specialise in AI and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions and their integration into agriculture and will provide the latest agricultural technologies at "competitive prices", he pointed out. The company, he said, will secure agricultural firms with a "significant" opportunity to develop their products and farms, which would ensure them a "competitive" edge on a global level. Chairman of China Green Agriculture Chen Li said that the company offers comprehensive solutions, including the design, construction, and operation of smart agricultural gardens, development of indoor plant production plants, and integration of IoT technologies into the agricultural sector. Li noted that among the company's key projects are King Salman Park in Saudi Arabia and a park in Wenzhou, China. During the opening ceremony, a memorandum of understanding was signed with Jordanian companies, one of which was originally launched at the Agricultural Innovation Incubator at National Centre for Agricultural Research, the scientific arm of the Ministry of Agriculture. © Copyright The Jordan Times.
