Malay rights are safe, Khaled tells Dr M
Umno vice-president Khaled Nordin said the younger generation is smarter, more critical, and unlikely to fall for what he called 'emotional politics'. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Umno vice-president Khaled Nordin has assured the Malay community that their rights and interests are firmly protected under the Federal Constitution and safeguarded by the country's monarchy. 'To all Malays: no one is threatening our rights or interests,' he said in an interview with FMT. 'They have long been enshrined in the Federal Constitution and protected by our wise Malay rulers.' Khaled was responding to a call by former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad for Malays to join his new unity alliance, which the latter said was aimed at saving the community from what he described as their political and economic decline. Mahathir said the group, which includes PAS and Bersatu, is not a political party but a coalition aimed at 'restoring Malay power' in the government. While he did not want to invite Umno to join the alliance as a party, Mahathir said he welcomed its members who share his views. Khaled stressed that the younger generation is smarter, more critical, and unlikely to fall for what he called 'emotional politics'. The defence minister also said he believes that the true challenge facing the Malay community lies not in external threats, but in outdated and regressive thinking among some of its own leaders. The Kota Tinggi MP also reminded Malays that they needed to focus on gaining knowledge, skills and competitiveness. 'Many Malay leaders do not realise that generations X, Y, Z and Alpha … are not easily swayed by emotional politics aimed solely at gaining power,' he said. 'We need to engage in rational politics guided by strong values. Sentimentalism alone won't help us.'

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA: Malaysia is expected to receive its first maritime patrol aircraft from Italian defence and arms company Leonardo by the end of 2026, with the second aircraft scheduled for delivery three months later. Malaysia ordered two ATR-72 maritime aircraft from Leonardo in a RM900 million deal announced in 2023. The air force has plans to buy six maritime patrol aircraft in all, as part of its 2055 development plan. In a Bernama report, defence minister Khaled Nordin said the aircraft would be outfitted with advanced systems including anti-surface warfare and anti-submarine warfare capabilities before its delivery to Malaysia. 'As a maritime nation, Malaysia must have aircraft equipped with state-of-the-art systems like these to carry out patrols. The aircraft will be fitted with anti-submarine systems, enabling them to respond to related activities,' he said. 'As of now, project progress has exceeded 60% and remains on schedule. We are satisfied with the ongoing work carried out by Leonardo,' he said during a working visit to Leonardo's facility in Turin, Italy, yesterday. He described the procurement as a strategic investment to enhance the armed forces' readiness to address regional security challenges, particularly in the increasingly complex South China Sea. The aircrafts' primary roles include anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, and electronic warfare missions. Its secondary roles include search and rescue operations, surveillance of Malaysia's maritime zones, joint operations with armed forces units, and inter-agency enforcement with other government and security bodies. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Ayer Kuning win ‘purified' Umno from past weaknesses, says Khaled
Umno vice-president Khaled Nordin said PAS seems unable to move on from its past relationship with DAP and envies anyone who befriends the party. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Umno's win in the Ayer Kuning by-election is not just a political victory, but also a moral one that has helped 'purify' the party from its previous weaknesses, says party vice-president Khaled Nordin. Khaled said the victory shows the people want cooperative and progressive politics. 'For Umno, Malaysia's political future is about the courage to take risks, especially in the current disruptive political landscape. 'Umno must explore all possibilities in developing future political understanding, including working with anyone as long as it does not harm the Malays and Islam, deny the rights of the various communities, and hold back our ambitions of making Malaysia the best nation,' he said in a statement. Yesterday, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said the victory stemmed from the Umno-DAP alliance, which he claimed sought to 'purify' DAP, a party which had allegedly 'openly taken anti-Islam stances'. 'This includes efforts to 'cleanse' DAP and Pakatan Harapan of blame in controversies such as illegal pig farming in predominantly Malay-Muslim areas,' Hadi said. He said many Malay-Muslim voters in Ayer Kuning rejected the idea of a 'progressive and liberal Islam' and Umno-DAP's efforts to cleanse DAP's image, as these were against Islamic principles, especially in light of the health and environmental risks linked to pig farming. However, Khaled said PAS seems unable to move on from its past relationship with DAP and envies anyone who befriends the party. 'In truth, it was PAS that 'purified' DAP by 'marrying' it several times through political cooperation in the form of the Chinese Consultative Committee, Barisan Alternatif, and Pakatan Rakyat. 'At that time, everything was halal to PAS,' he said. Barisan Nasional's Yusri Bakir won the Ayer Kuning by-election after securing 11,065 votes for a 5,006-vote majority over his closest rival, Perikatan Nasional's Abdul Muhaimin Malek (6,059 votes) and Parti Sosialis Malaysia's KS Bawani (1,106 votes).
