ALA celebrates graduation of Italian students learning Arabic

The programme is part of the Academy's global outreach, aligned with its mission to promote the Arabic language worldwide and strengthen Sharjah's role as a hub of Arab culture. The ceremony was attended by key figures including Dr Mohamed Safi Mosteghanemi, Secretary-General of the Academy; Khalid bin Butti Al Hajri, Director-General of University City; and Dr Wael Farouk, Director of the Arab Cultural Institute in Milan. Gifts were distributed, and the event concluded with a group photo and luncheon. Teaching Arabic through immersion In his speech, Dr Mosteghanemi stressed the importance of linguistic immersion and the transformative power of reading for mastering Arabic. He encouraged students to make books lifelong companions and to live the Arabic language through its literature. Khalid bin Butti Al Hajri emphasized the students' special place in Sharjah, noting that their efforts contribute to broader cultural exchange. He celebrated their perseverance and the supportive cultural environment Sharjah offers. A new Arabic Language curriculum Ahead of the ceremony, Dr Wael Farouk delivered a lecture on innovative approaches to teaching Arabic. He criticised traditional methods that rely on translation and grammar-heavy models, advocating instead for a curriculum that teaches Arabic from within its own linguistic and cultural framework. Farouk introduced a new five-part curriculum, "The Living Word" (Le parole in azione), developed with Dr Alicia Ferrero. It guides learners from beginner to advanced levels and includes sections on grammar and media language. The method emphasises practice, listening, and contextual understanding to develop natural fluency. The event concluded with recognition of Sharjah's cultural leadership and a call for continued cooperation to strengthen Arabic language education globally.
