560 kg spurious cotton seeds seized in three separate raids in Khammam, nine arrested
In a major crackdown on sale of spurious seeds, the Enkoor police in coordination with Agriculture Department officials seized 560 kgs of spurious seed worth ₹14 lakh during three separate raids in Enkoor mandal of Khammam district in the last three days.
Nine persons were arrested on charges of selling spurious seeds to gullible farmers through agents, under the limits of Khammam Police Commissionerate.
A raid on an agricultural field at Repallewada in Enkoor mandal on May 27 led to the seizure of 330 packets of spurious cotton seeds, two litres of Rizobin chemical, and a weighing machine. The kingpin of the gang allegedly procured the spurious seeds from a person in Bapatla district of Andhra Pradesh, for sale to unsuspecting farmers to make a quick buck, police said.
While addressing the media on Friday, Khammam Police Commissioner Sunil Dutt said that vigil has been intensified in the entire Khammam Police Commissionerate limits to curb sale of spurious seeds. Stern action will be taken against those involved in manufacture and sale of spurious seeds, he added.
