'Suchitra Sen was far superior in the original': Waheeda Rehman reflects on 56 years of Asit Sen's ‘Khamoshi'- Exclusive

Veteran actress Waheeda Rehman looks back on Asit Sen 's poignant psychological drama Khamoshi as it completes 56 years since its release. The 1969 film, which featured her in one of her most nuanced performances, continues to be celebrated for its emotional depth and haunting stillness. In this candid conversation, Waheedaji reflects on the film, her inspirations, and her memories of working with co-stars Rajesh Khanna and Dharmendra . Waheedaji, it's been 56 years since your performance in Asit Sen's psychological drama Khamoshi. How does that feel? It feels wonderful that the film is still remembered so fondly after all these years. Khamoshi was a very special project for me. How did the role come your way? by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! IC Markets Start Now Undo Asit Sen was a very talented Bengali director. He approached me with the offer. Khamoshi was actually a remake of his earlier Bengali film Dweep Jwele Jai, which had released ten years earlier. In the original, Suchitra Sen played the role of Radha, the nurse in a psychiatric hospital—the same role I portrayed in the Hindi version. How would you compare your performance with Suchitra Sen's? Honestly, and without any false modesty, I would say Suchitra Sen was far superior in the original. I'm not saying I was bad—I think I was quite good too—but nothing compared to the original. This often happens with remakes. What was it like working with Rajesh Khanna? He was very new at that time, but even then, his talent was evident. He was soft-spoken, very charming, and a pleasure to work with. We actually worked together again many years later in a South Indian film called Maqsad. Dharmendra was also in Khamoshi, right? Yes, Dharmendra was there, but interestingly, his face was never shown in the film. I believe Asit Sen himself had played Dharmendra's role in the Bengali original. Don't you think Asit Sen was a highly underrated director? I agree. He made so many classics in both Bengali and Hindi cinema. I feel proud to have been a part of one of them. Asit Sen won the Best Director award for Safar, the same year Khamoshi was released, and you lost the Best Actress award to Mumtaz for Khilona. Do you remember that? I don't recall the awards part. But I do remember that Khamoshi was well-received when it was released. I'm very proud of that film. Do you consider Khamoshi among your best works? I don't know about 'best,' but I do like my work in Pyaasa, Guide, Teesri Kasam, Khamoshi, Neel Kamal, and Reshma Aur Shera. These films are close to my heart. Zara Noor Abbas says Pakistan's showbiz is a community, not an industry

Zara Noor Abbas is coasting through the joys of having a newborn, and currently has no need for wireless headphones to help her through parenting. Photo: Instagram Listen to article Actor Zara Noor Abbas has said that Pakistan's entertainment sector is not developed enough to be classified as an industry and should instead be considered a small community where a handful of people drive the entire business. Speaking on a private TV channel's Ramadan transmission, Zara pointed out the lack of proper recognition for supporting crew members, arguing that a true industry acknowledges the contributions of all professionals, from graphic artists to cameramen. "Rather than an industry, it is more like a community where a few people come together to make dramas," she said. "An industry is one where every creative professional is respected, recognised, and nominated for awards. That does not happen here." Her remarks came during a discussion with host and actor Danish Taimoor, who disagreed with her assessment, stating that Pakistan's drama sector has grown significantly over the past decade. He argued that the industry is flourishing compared to what it was 10 to 12 years ago. Abbas, however, maintained that while progress has been made, the structural shortcomings still prevent Pakistan's entertainment sector from reaching the level of a full-fledged industry. She pointed out that while there is an abundance of creative talent, the opportunities remain limited to a select few. "In the current scenario, we have a huge supply of creatives—actors and digital influencers from Lahore, Faisalabad, and other cities of Punjab. There is such amazing talent, but the demand continues to stay for a handful of people only," she said. Zara Noor Abbas is a prominent Pakistani actress known for her versatile performances in television and film. She gained widespread recognition for her roles in popular TV dramas such as "Khamoshi" and "Ehd-e-Wafa". In 2019, she made her film debut with "Chhalawa" and "Parey Hut Love", both of which performed well at the box office. Her most recent project is "Standup Girl", a comedy-drama television series that aired from December 2023 to 2024 on Green Entertainment. In this series, she portrayed Zara, a young woman from Islamabad who aspires to become a stand-up comedian and embarks on a journey to Lahore to pursue her dreams.
