Dust storms: Iraq loses $1M a day

Shafaq News/ Dust storms sweeping across Iraq are costing the country an estimated $1 million per day in damages across multiple sectors, the Green Iraq Observatory revealed on Tuesday. 'The health sector bears the brunt of the impact,' the observatory explained in a report, citing treatment costs for respiratory illnesses. Many patients are also turning to home oxygen devices rather than visiting hospitals and clinics. Other damages include an uptick in traffic accidents on highways due to near-zero visibility, as well as severe harm to crops. Risks to livestock and wildlife were also highlighted, along with soaring water usage in cleaning operations at homes, government offices, and streets—adding strain to sewage systems often clogged with mud and debris. The Observatory urged authorities to fast-track efforts to combat the crisis by launching long-delayed afforestation campaigns and reviving the Green Belt project, particularly in border provinces. The latest sandstorm wave, driven by a seasonal Khamsini low-pressure system, has blanketed cities across Iraq and the Kurdistan Region over the past five days, triggering mass cases of suffocation and disrupting daily life. A Fragile Country Iraq is among the world's five most vulnerable countries to climate change, according to the United Nations. Earlier this year, the Strategic Center for Human Rights reported a nearly 30% loss of arable land over the past three decades due to climate shifts. The water crisis, already gripping Iraq for years, has worsened dramatically since 2021, pushing river levels to historic lows. A World Bank report estimates Iraq will need $233 billion in development-focused investments by 2040—roughly 6% of its GDP annually—to pursue greener, more inclusive growth.

Hot, dusty weather sweeps across Jordan

Temperatures rose across Jordan on Monday as a relatively hot air mass began affecting the Kingdom, gradually ushering in dry and relatively hot khamsini weather conditions across most regions. Tonight, temperatures are expected to remain higher than in previous nights, with moderate and dusty weather prevailing in varying intensities. Winds will be moderate and southerly. Hot, Dry Khamsini Conditions Continue in the Coming Days According to the latest weather maps from ArabiaWeather, Jordan will be impacted on Wednesday by a 'khamsini' low-pressure system accompanied by an even hotter air mass. This will renew dusty, dry weather and drive temperatures further upward. Conditions are forecast to be relatively hot to hot in most areas and dusty to varying degrees. In Amman, temperatures are expected to reach the mid-30s Celsius, while the Jordan Valley and Aqaba will experience extreme heat. Strong Winds and Dust Storms Forecast for Wednesday ArabiaWeather meteorologists warn of significant wind activity by midday and afternoon Wednesday, particularly in desert and open areas, including the Badia. Wind gusts may reach up to 70 km/h, raising dust and potentially causing intense dust storms along desert highways, the eastern plains, and border crossings. Recommendations: Beaware of dust after noon. Expect reduced horizontal visibility due to dense dust storms in the southern and eastern regions, eastern plains, and border crossings during midday and afternoon hours. Avoid physical exertion during peak heat hours and stay well-hydrated. Safely dispose of cigarette butts to prevent fires. Do not leave children inside closed vehicles, even for short periods. Avoid leaving flammable materials inside closed vehicles for extended periods. Tonight, skies will be partly dusty with moderate temperatures and the appearance of mid- and high-level clouds. Winds will shift to moderate southwesterlies. Temperature Drop and Dust Retreat by Thursday On Thursday, the impact of the relatively hot air mass will begin to diminish. Temperatures will drop noticeably, though they will remain above seasonal averages. Dust levels will gradually subside, with warm to hot conditions expected in the afternoon. Mid- and high-level clouds will be present, while the Jordan Valley, Dead Sea, and Aqaba will continue to experience hot conditions. Winds will be moderate westerlies to northwesterlies across much of the Kingdom, while southern and eastern regions will see moderate to active southwesterly winds, stirring dust to varying degrees. Thursday night will bring a further drop in nighttime temperatures. Conditions will be pleasant in the evening and cool late at night and during the early morning hours, with scattered mid- and high-level clouds expected.
