Former Pinedene girl now teaches next door
VANDERBIJLPARK – From classroom dreams to chalkboard reality. A Pinedene Primary alumna is back in town, not as a learner, but as a teacher. Meet Makhosazana Mehlomakhulu, a grade four teacher at Oakwood Primary School, a stone's throw away from where her future dreams began. Affectively known as 'Teacher Khosi' by her fellow pupils, the 24-year-old's story is living proof that destiny waits for no one. As early as Grade One, Khosi has always wanted to follow in her mother's footsteps, who has been teaching for more than 33 years. It seems the apple didn't fall far from the tree as the Vanderbijlpark-born and bred cool girl nurtures young minds in the very community that raised her. As the nation marks June as Youth Month, Khosi's story is a timely reminder of how far passion and purpose can take you, especially when education leads the way. Speaking to Ster, Khosi shared her life story from her first day in primary school, her matric at THS Carel de Wet, and later taking up her academics at North-West University. 'After completing my grade 12, I furthered my studies at North-West University, where I studied a Bachelor of Education. I passed with cum laude. In 2023, I completed my Bachelor of Honours Degree in Education Management and Leadership and graduated in 2024,' she said proudly. Reminiscing on her foundation phase days when she was asked what she wanted to become, Khosi said she stuck to her calling no matter what. 'I've always known what I wanted, and my mom has always been my biggest inspiration. Her passion, drive, selflessness, and compassion for kids are the reason I wanted to follow in her footsteps,' she said. While her university journey was an easy one, Khosi said her first year in teaching came with its hurdles. 'I was studying postgraduate full-time and teaching at the same time. Juggling those two things was difficult to say the least, but I pushed through,' she said. Sharing her rewarding tale of what it means to be a teacher, Khosi sure seems to enjoy being a mother to hundreds of kids. 'Being a teacher is not easy because you're a mother to more than 100 kids. Every day, you answer thousands of questions. The biggest reward is knowing that you're making a difference in children's lives. For me, knowing that you're someone's safe space in a world of chaos is the biggest incentive,' she said. At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Former Kaizer Chiefs ball wizard has revealed he once chose Amakhosi over a move to Portugal. Most veteran football fans in Mzansi count Dladla among the top five greatest players in history. Speaking to the media in the past week, the former Kaizer Chiefs winger turned down a move to Portugal as a gesture of dedication to Amakhosi. 'Yes, I did get offers,' Dladla said via iDiski Times. 'Once, Mr Motaung came to me and said, 'There's a chance for you to go abroad to play with Malombo [Lichaba] in Portugal'. But I said to him, 'Bra K, if I go, who will be left?' Ace [Ntsoelengoe] was also gone. I stayed because I loved Chiefs. 'I did not want to leave. How could I when someone lost his life for me to be at this club? I stayed because I wanted to honour Ewert. That's why I will always be a Khosi,' the Amakhosi icon concluded. Zoo elephants feel the quake first – what they do next is incredible
Listen to article A 5.2-magnitude earthquake that struck Southern California triggered a remarkable display of protective behaviour from a herd of African elephants at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. In video footage released by the park, the elephants are seen reacting moments after the tremor begins, scattering briefly before regrouping to form an "alert circle" – a defensive posture where adult elephants encircle their young to shield them from perceived threats. The older elephants, Ndlula, Umngani, and Khosi, quickly moved to protect the two seven-year-old calves, Zuli and Mkhaya. The group stood in formation for several minutes, with ears spread and heads turning outward, appearing alert even after the shaking ceased. 'They sort of freeze as they gather information about where the danger is,' said Mindy Albright, curator of mammals at the park. She noted that elephants are able to detect seismic vibrations through their feet. One calf, Zuli, took immediate refuge at the centre of the circle, while Mkhaya initially lingered on the edge, seemingly reluctant to retreat. Khosi, a teenage female, repeatedly nudged Mkhaya with her trunk, gently coaxing him back into the protective formation. The video has drawn widespread attention online, with many praising the animals' social intelligence and instinctive care for their young. 'It's so great to see them doing the thing we all should be doing – that any parent does, which is protect their children,' Albright said. An aftershock about an hour later prompted the herd to briefly regroup before dispersing again once calm was restored. No injuries were reported in the quake, which was felt from San Diego to Los Angeles. Minor damage was noted in areas near the epicentre, including the mountain town of Julian.

Watch Elephants Use This 'Unique' Ability In Response To San Diego Earthquake
A herd of African elephants had each others' backs at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park on Monday as a 5.2 magnitude earthquake shook Southern California on Monday morning. (Check out the clip below.) The elephants, in a clip posted to the park's social media channels, formed what the park dubbed a 'circle of trust' as they swiftly moved closer to one another and around youngsters in the herd. 'Elephants have the unique ability to feel sounds through their feet and formed what is known as an 'alert circle,'' the San Diego Zoo Safari Park noted in the post's caption. The response by the herd — composed of Ndlula, Umngani and Khosi, as well as youngsters Zuli and Mkhaya — is tied to a 'natural response to perceived threats that helps protect younger elephants and the herd as a whole,' the park noted. The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance told San Diego's NBC affiliate that the clip demonstrates the 'strong social family structure in elephant herds.' The herd went back to 'business as usual' after roughly four minutes and are now 'safe' along with other crew members with the wildlife alliance, according to the park. The park — which eight African elephants call home — was among a number of places shaken up by the quake with an epicenter just south of the community of Julian, which is roughly 60 miles northeast of San Diego. Several lesser-magnitude aftershocks were also reported, per the U.S. Geological Survey.
