Video: After Pahalgam, young voices from Kashmir
Play We were too upset to eat dinner after hearing about the Pahalgam terror attack, said Yasmin Khan, a journalist with Awaz the Voice. All the political parties and religious organisations in Kashmir condemned the attacks but unfortunately, India's television channels did not bring this news to the attention of the public, said Nasir Khuehami is the National Convenor of the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association. In this episode of Karwan e Mohabbat's Yeh Daag Daag Ujala series on the state of the republic., writer and peace activist Harsh Mander speaks with Khuehami and Khan about the impact of the attack on their lives and those of their community. As news of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam spread, reports emerged from several parts of the country of Kashmiri students, traders, and workers facing threats, harassment, and, in some cases, physical assaults. Khuehami and Khan describe an atmosphere of fear, suspicion and isolation that has deepened in the wake of the violence. They also reflect on the role of mainstream media in amplifying hostility and hate, which they argue contributes to their marginalisation and recent attacks. They share personal accounts of how Kashmiris mourned the terror attack and extended support to those affected, even as they came under intense scrutiny. They describe the emotional toll of being targeted, despite their clear expressions of solidarity.

‘My home open to you': Captain Amarinder Singh assures support to Kashmiri students
Amid rising concerns over the harassment and intimidation of Kashmiri students in Punjab, Chandigarh, and other parts of the country, former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh reached out to Nasir Khuehami, national convenor of the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA), to express solidarity and extend unconditional support. In a telephonic conversation with Khuehami, the Patiala royal expressed deep concern over recent incidents of targeted harassment involving Kashmiri students in educational institutions. Reassuring students of his support, Singh said his home was open to any Kashmiri youth in distress and asserted that Punjab had always been and would remain a welcoming and safe place for all communities, especially those from Jammu and Kashmir. 'Every Kashmiri student is like my own child. They are like my family. They are an inseparable part of India, and Punjab is as much their home as Kashmir. My doors are open to them—anytime, for anything,' Singh said during the call. 'To every Kashmiri student facing intimidation or injustice, please know you are not alone. I stand with you. Whether in Punjab, Chandigarh, or anywhere else in India, I will extend every possible support to ensure your safety, dignity, and rights are protected,' he added. Khuehami, welcoming the outreach, said, ' Captain Amarinder Singh 's message sends a powerful signal of inclusivity and reassurance to Kashmiri students. At a time when divisive forces are trying to isolate and intimidate minorities, such statements by senior political leaders are not only timely but crucial.' He also urged state authorities and educational institutions to take swift and strict action against those trying to disrupt communal harmony. 'We won't allow fear to win. Attempts to divide us will be defeated by unity and compassion. Kashmiri students must feel safe wherever they study across India,' Singh told Khuehami.

Student from Jammu and Kashmir attacked in Maharashtra's Nagpur
A pharmacy student hailing from Jammu and Kashmir was on Sunday allegedly attacked by a group of people in Nagpur's Kamptee area, The Hindu reported on Tuesday quoting police officials. The incident occurred when two first-year students – Mohammad Waseem from Doda and Piyush Lanjeh from Jammu – were returning to their hostel and were approached by some residents. Waseem was questioned about his background by them and when he could not respond clearly, the situation escalated into an assault, which ended only when Lanjeh clarified that they were college students, the newspaper quoted the police as saying. The student who was attacked described the attackers as 'anti-social elements' and denied any communal motive behind the incident. However, he acknowledged that the assault began only after he disclosed that he was from Jammu and Kashmir, The Hindu reported. Kamptee police station Mahesh Andhale told The Times of India that the students had gone to the Kampee market to buy books. On the way back, they took a shortcut through a small settlement, and one of them stopped to urinate, which led to an altercation between them and some locals, the official said. Waseem told the newspaper: 'We were not aware the area from where we passed was notorious for criminal activity. They held us by shirt's collar and attempt to loot us. We somehow managed to flee though they beat us.' The student added that the attackers appeared to have been inebriated. Waseem said the students told a relative about the incident, who spoke about it to J&K Students Association National Convenor Nasir Khuehami. In a post on X, Khuehami said that the student was 'brutally thrashed without any rhyme and reason by fringe elements', and that he was hit on the face, neck, back, and arms. 'Such a reign of terror against Kashmiri students must stop immediately,' he said. Khuehami urged Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to personally intervene and ensure exemplary action against the culprits. However, the police have said that no formal complaint has been filed so far. 'The victim refused to file a first information report or take us to the spot,' Mahesh Andhale, the Kamptee police station incharge, told The Times of India.

Two students from J&K assaulted in Kamptee, police rule out hate crime
Nagpur: Two first-year pharmacy students, one from Doda and another from Jammu, were allegedly thrashed by a group of anti-social elements late Sunday in Kamptee, 15km off Nagpur. Police ruled out hate crime as the trigger. The incident, which occurred when they were on their way to the hostel near Kamptee Road, came to light following a post on 'X' by J&K Students Association national convenor Nasir Khuehami. "Mohd Waseem, student from Doda, was brutally thrashed by fringe elements in Nagpur. Waseem said he was assaulted by three goons, who knocked him down and punched on the face and stomach and kicked him in the knees. Besides Waseem, his classmate Piyush Lanjeh from Jammu was also assaulted," stated Khuehami on X. After the J&K youth leader sought Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis' intervention, Kamptee police visited the college hostel and started an inquiry. The duo did not report the incident and only told a relative, who informed Khuehami. College officials were surprised when police visited them. No FIR was filed as students were scared and busy with exams, they said. Speaking to TOI, Waseem said he and Piyush were taken aback when they were confronted by a group, who appeared drunk. "We were not aware the area was crime prone. They held us by our collars and when we tried to wriggle out of their clutches, we were assaulted. We only informed a relative, who told Khuehami," he said. "The attackers asked us about our state, and we said Jammu. We think this was a fallout of the Pahalgam terror attack , as Kashmiri students are being targeted in other places. We don't know the trigger. We were so petrified we didn't have dinner that night," he said. Kamptee police station in-charge Mahesh Andhale said he visited the college and enquired about students. "The students were not attacked due to their J&K origin. They had gone out to buy books from Kamptee bazar and took a shortcut through a slum area. One of them stopped to answer nature's call when some locals objected. The students couldn't explain their situation and an argument ensued. And they were assaulted. The victims refused to file an FIR or take us to the spot," he said. Andhale mentioned that a note in the station diary was filed, and they were trying to search for the attackers. "The students said they wouldn't be able to identify the suspects if we produced them. Yet, we have activated our network to trace the culprits," he said. The officer added that they shared their personal numbers with all the J&K students in the college, and beat marshals have begun patrolling the area. College officials confirmed the incident to TOI, but sought to downplay the incident as a backlash of the Pahalgam terror attack. Twelve students from Jammu and Kashmir are studying under the PM Special Scholarship Scheme at the college. "Currently, their summer exams are underway, and we don't want students to lose their focus. The issue has been resolved. Some reports and social media posts have sought to connect it with the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack. We also came to know about the incident through social media. Later, we got a call from the police and the CM office too. The students did not report the incident to us. We have spoken to their parents and assured them of safety. The exams will be over in a month," college officials said.
