Kerry cricketers beat UCC to qualify for All-Ireland National Cup quarter-finals

Batting first, Kerry were soon in trouble at 11 for 2 after five overs, the rebuilding was pedestrian at best, and at 89 for 3 at the half way stage, they looked unlikely to reach 200. But at the fall of the fourth wicket, Khurram joined captain Braden Warnke; together they found top gear. Some classic cover-drives from Warnke contrasted with Khurram's clean six-hitting. Astonishingly, from 130 for 4 in the 29th over, Kerry more than doubled their score in the last 11 overs to finish on a competitive 267 for 7; Khurram lead the way finishing on 87 not out after smashing eight 4s and five 6s. In reply, UCC also started slowly, Adnam fell early and cheaply, but Rizwan and Seenu stayed doggedly at the crease. The clear strategy was to keep wickets in hand to allow them to match Kerry's acceleration in the latter half of their innings. Not bad in theory, but Kerry bowlers very effectively kept the scoring rate down, so the climbing run-rate-required began to dramatically increase pressure on UCC. Rizwan played with great confidence and regularly found the boundary to remind Kerry that he might match Khurram's fireworks later. After Seenu's dismissal, Vikrant hit a dynamic 35 (one 4, four 6s) to further jangle Kerry nerves. When Usman Sherzad found the top of Vikrant's off stump, the pendulum started to swing back towards Kerry, and when Kashif Khan bowled Rizwan the domino effect brought the match to a rapid conclusion; UCC, 166 all out in the 31st over. In the final analysis, a convincing win by 101 runs; Kerry march into an All-Ireland National Cup quarter-final. MCU Division 1 T20 League On Saturday, Kerry's second XI faced Limerick in the morning and Nenagh in the evening, both at the Oyster Oval. After a start delayed by a wet outfield the hosts batting line-up performed like an equally damp squib, capitulating for 45, a token effort breezed past by Limerick's second XI in less than 7 overs. The hosts put up a better fight in the third and final match of the day; bowling respectable pace and lines, they dismissed Nenagh for a below par 124. But in spite of another feisty contribution of from Stephen Jonnalagadda (33), Kerry batters sent up too many skiers which the Nenagh fielders swallowed up with relish; again, Kerry's squad failed to chase down a modest target, all out for 111. Kerry 2nd XI: a.o. 45, lost to Limerick 2nd XI: 47 for no loss, by 10 wickets. Nenagh 1st XI: 124 for 8, beat Kerry 2nd XI: 111 a.o. by 13 runs. MCU Division 3A Kerry's fourth XI continue their good form with a comfortable four-wicket victory over the Blasters with an over to spare at the Oyster Oval on Sunday. Limerick Blasters 3rd XI: 233a.o. lost to Kerry 4th XI 234 for 6, by 4 wickets

Great Greek restaurant opens Waukesha/Brookfield location, the first in Wisconsin

A newcomer Greek restaurant — whose business sign along Moreland Boulevard has tantalizingly stood for months — has finally ended the long wait for Mediterranean food-craving patrons. The Great Greek Mediterranean Grill has opened, and will hold its grand opening Monday, May 12, at 21481 E. Moreland Blvd. in the Town of Brookfield (but mere feet outside of the City of Waukesha) in a two-restaurant strip mall adjacent to Walgreens just west of Kossow Road. The franchise location has been long in coming. A finished sign on the building was erected in late 2024, followed by a marquee sign, but with no hint of an opening date. But with a Facebook announcement April 21, the business began welcoming customers with a mix of promotions and menu introductions during a soft-open period. "We're still learning, but I think we're going to be alright," Ayan Khurram, the store's general manager, said May 1 as a small crowd gathered for an early dinner rush. Menu items include Greek specialty appetizers such as dolmades, tzatziki and melitzanosalata; standard a la carte items such as gyros and Greek salads; entrée plates, including a souvlaki or gyros; desserts, including baklava; and a children's menu. A full menu, available also for online orders, is available on the local restaurant's website. Khurram said the chain takes extra care to offer a quality taste, especially for their spiced gyro meat. "We're really proud of this," he said, adding that the pitas are supplied by restaurant supplier Sysco using Great Greek's recipe. The business is open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. According to the corporate website, Nick Della Penna, a real estate investor and Trent Jones, a three-decade restaurant veteran, were next-door neighbors in a Las Vegas neighborhood who drew inspiration from a local Greek establishment for sale. In 2016, they set up the first Great Greek Mediterranean Grill, quickly expanding to three locations. A franchising partnership with United Franchise Group soon followed. As of the end of 2024, the chain had dozens of locations spread over 18 states. The Town of Brookfield location, listed as Waukesha East by the company, is the first in Wisconsin. More may be coming under the same franchisee. "They're opening five of these here in Wisconsin," Khurram said. Journey Through Udaipur: The Myths That Shape Its Culture

Set in the heart of Rajasthan, Udaipur is a majestic city which has a rich history and a lot of hidden mysteries. It is not only famous for its scenic palaces, beautiful lakes, and cultural heritage but is also known for its stunning collection of local myths and legends. These tales, which have been told for centuries, make the city even more magical than it already is. In this article, we are going to embark on a storytelling adventure by uncovering some of the captivating tales that Udaipur has to offer. Myth of Lake Pichola: A Holy Creation One of the most famous sites in Udaipur is Lake Pichola, which is famous for its many myths. Local legends say that the lake was made in the 14th century by a Banjara tribesman, Pichhu Banjara, who was moving grain across the region. He was baffled by the dry scenery and the locals who were suffering due to the lack of water. His heart went out for the people and he tried to help them by digging a reservoir that would collect rainwater. The lake was later enlarged by the founder of Udaipur, Maharana Udai Singh II, who saw the potential for the lake to help the city thrive. Attempts to explain the beginnings of Lake Pichola are often accompanied by fascinating legends. One of them speaks of an ancient sage who meditated beside it and was so deeply impressed by its stunning beauty that he put a protective spell upon it. He predicted that so long as the waters remained uncontaminated, the city of Udaipur would thrive. Even now, the lake is viewed as sacred and its waters are believed to possess miraculous healing powers. Locals are fond of narrating stories of angels and divine beings emerging from the water to help safeguard the city against adversaries. Love Story Hidden in the Jag Mandir Palace This is not merely an ordinary magnificent monument, standing on an island on Lake Pichola; it combines the wondrous magnificence of a palace with a truly romantic story behind it. They say that one of the greatest Mughal emperors, Shah Jahan, was so mesmerized by its beauty that he intended to design the Taj Mahal right at Jag Mandir. Historians claim it has other standing points, but at least we now know where the romance blends with the tale. Like all royal palaces, Jag Mandir comes with its own legend. This has to do with Prince Khurram, later known as Shah Jahan. Khurram, in his rebellion against his father, Emperor Jahangir, took refuge in Udaipur. The ruler of Udaipur at this point in time, Maharana Karan Singh, granted him shelter at Jag Mandir. During his stay, the prince was so stunned by the hospitality offered by the Mewar dynasty and the beauty of the palace that he promised never to attack Udaipur. And, indeed, he never did, allowing the bonds of friendship between Mewar and the Mughal empire to blossom for years to come. Myth of the Karni Mata Temple: A Blessing from the Divine The temple lies on the Machla Magra Hills. Karni Mata Temple lies on one of the most spiritually charged hills. This temple is dedicated to Karni Mata, who is renowned for being a sage and a reincarnation of the goddess Durga. She is said to have saved a young boy who drowned in Lake Pichola, bringing him back to life. The boy's family constructed the temple in honor of her out of gratitude. Another intriguing myth dealing with the temple is the rats that make it their home. Known as 'kabbas,' these rats are regarded as holy and are thought to be the reincarnated progeny of Karni Mata herself. They say that if you chance upon a white rat in the midst of thousands of black ones, you are in for some extremely good luck. Devotees from all over the country come to the temple to receive blessings and to see this strange sight for themselves. Story of the Monsoon Palace A Tale of Celestial Mythology: The Monsoon Palace; Sajjangarh Palace. Set high on the hill from where Udaipur can be seen is the Monsoon Palace or Sajjangarh Palace. The palace was built by Maharaja Sajjan Singh towards the end of the nineteenth century. It was meant to function as a center for astronomical studies at first but like other localities, has its own story behind. Legends claim that the palace was built so that the Maharana could speak to the gods and have the power to know when the monsoon is going to hit. As retold by the locals, the Maharana King was said to be worried regarding the calamitous droughts that slashed his land. He talked to a sage, who advised him to build a palace in the higher mountains, suggesting that the region would then be able to attract the Rain God. The sage's advice was well followed, and after the stunning palace was finished, it rained all throughout the year. Not only is the Monsoon Palace famous for its architecture, but the locals also love to go there and enjoy the extraordinary sunsets. Story of Bhartiya Lok Kala Mandal: Restoration of Folklore This cultural institution is tasked with recovery of the local Udaipur legends, so it is not a myth. Puppet-telling, folk dancing, and open folklore are just some of the ways that the Mandal uses to refresh the spirits of the city that slowly seems to be losing its tales. Conclusion: A City with a Narrative at its Heart Udaipur is more than just a place; it is a living anthology of history, culture, and mythology. Every story contributes to its identity, fusing both the past and the present into a seamless whole. The divine genesis of Lake Pichola, the captivating romance of Jag Mandir, and the sacred rats at the Karni Mata Temple are just some of the tales that beg us to experience Udaipur with more than just our eyes. When you traverse its lakes, palaces, and streets, keep in mind you are traveling within a city where every last stone is graven with stories waiting to be told.
