Multi-party delegations are to secure support for India, not highlight domestic political differences, says Salman Khurshid

Former Union Minister Salman Khurshid on Sunday (June 1, 2025) took to social media to clarify that the multi-party delegations formed by the Centre, which are visiting different countries to explain India's stance on Operation Sindoor post the Pahalgam terror attack, are seeking to secure 'explicit support for the country and not highlight domestic political differences'. Mr. Khursid's comment came after reports that he had endorsed the Modi government's decision to abrogate the Special Status of Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 and talked about how the move brought prosperity to the Union Territory. The Congress leader is part of the delegation that has visited Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Indonesia and Malaysia. In a long Facebook post, Mr. Khurshid, who is a member of the Congress Working Committee (CWC), took a very nuanced position, explaining how 'our instincts told us to stand by the government and support the need to bring the offenders to justice'. In all strategic matters, there are varying opinions and questions will be asked of the government as more information comes out, he added. 'But this debate should not spill over into the national endeavour to persuade the world about the core issue of terrorist attacks on India,' Mr. Khursid wrote, adding, 'Our parties sent us to secure explicit support from the countries we are visiting, not to highlight domestic party-political differences. In conclusion, we hope to be back home soon with some gain for the country. Ma thuje salaam'. Unlike Congress leader Shashi Tharoor's comment on surgical strikes, which triggered sharp reactions from party colleagues, the Congress has been silent on Mr. Khurshid's statement on Article 370. The difference in the stance is because the Congress position on Article 370 has undergone a change -- from strongly opposing the dilution in August 2019 to complete silence on it. Instead, the party now pushes for restoration of complete Statehood for J&K. However, with media reports pitching Mr. Khurshid's statement as being at odds with his party, he wrote, '…we understand public duties and national interest a lot better than armchair critics and TRP chasers'.

"Hum honge kaamyaab": Salman Khurshid highlights India's unified stance against terrorism in Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur [Malaysia], June 1 (ANI): Congress leader Salman Khurshid, part of the JD(U) MP Sanjay Kumar Jha-led delegation, on Sunday highlighted India's unified stance against terrorism, underscoring the need for a collective global response to combat terrorism, promoting peace and prosperity worldwide. 'With one voice India is saying, 'Terrorism no more.'... We hope to create a collective rise against terrorism to make the globe peaceful and prosperous... We can confidently say, 'Hum honge kaamyaab',' he said. Notably, 'I'll Overcome Someday' was a hymn or gospel music composition by the Reverend Charles Albert Tindley of Philadelphia that was first published in 1901. In India, the renowned poet Girija Kumar Mathur composed a literal translation in Hindi 'Hum Honge Kaamyab' which became a popular patriotic/spiritual song during the 1970s and 1980s, particularly in schools. Khurshid said that India's all-party delegation shows diversity, as well as unity, because of the way they unequivocally condemn terrorism despite being from different parties. 'The message we come with. It is a message of unity. We are from several parties. We are from several regions of India. We are from several religions of India. But if you want to see how when it comes to the nation and your motherland how you come together and how you combine how you speak in a single voice is what we are here to show and which is which is something that we by commitment and deep in our hearts we feel very strongly, which is why we are here together to present this picture to you,' he said. Khurshid said that beyond everyday politics that happens in India, all politicians rise above differences and unite when it comes to serving the nation. 'And in many ways, when we look at all of you having links with the motherland... One point to make about this is that we are here combined on one issue and whatever news you may get from India, you get from what is happening every day in India, that's part of the everyday life of India, the politics of the everyday life of India, but we rise above that politics when we come to serve the nation,' he said. Khurshid added that even when the soldiers go to protect the borders, they have only one sentiment- to protect Mother India. 'People, when they go to war to protect the country, to protect the borders of our country. They go there as essentially as Indians. They have their faiths. They have their languages, they have their cultures, they have their subcultures, but when they are at the border, they have only one sentiment, and that is the sentiment to protect Mother India,' he said. Khurshid is part of the all-party parliamentary delegation led by JD(U) MP Sanjay Kumar Jha, which is currently visiting partner countries to reinforce India's firm resolve against cross-border terrorism and its zero-tolerance policy. The delegation has so far visited Indonesia, South Korea, Japan, and Singapore. It includes BJP MPs Brij Lal, Pradan Baruah, Hemang Joshi, and Aparajita Sarangi; Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee; CPI-M's John Brittas; Congress leader and former Union minister Salman Khurshid; and Mohan Kumar. After Tharoor row, Salman Khurshid's take on Art 370 fresh headache for Congress

File photo: Congress leader Salman Khurshid (Picture credit: ANI) NEW DELHI: The all-party delegations visiting various countries to expose Pakistan post the Pahalgam attack seem to be becoming a headache for the Congress with senior party leader and former external affairs minister Salman Khurshid's recent remarks backing nullification of Article 370 in 2019 by the Modi government likely to discomfit the Congress. This comes after another delegation member, Shashi Tharoor, faced strong criticism from within the party for his statement that India crossed the line of control (LoC) to conduct surgical strikes "for the first time" under the Modi government. While addressing think tanks and academia in Indonesia on Friday, Khurshid said it was unfortunate that Pakistan wants to undo the prosperity that has come to Jammu & Kashmir following the abrogation. Khurshid is part of one of the seven- all party delegations currently touring various countries. The Congress had initially opposed the move to scrap Article 370. The party later nuanced its position and has since been ambivalent on the issue of restoration of the Article which granted J&K special status. "Kashmir had a major problem for a long time. Much of that was reflected in the thinking of the government in an article called 370 of the Constitution, which somehow gave the impression that it was separate from the rest of the country. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Что происходит при сжигании лаврового листа? Undo But Article 370 was abrogated, it was finally put to an end, because so much time had passed.," Khurshid said while addressing the Indonesian think tanks and academia. "Subsequently, there was an election with 65% participation. There's an elected government in Kashmir today, and therefore, for people to want to undo everything that has happened, the prosperity that has come to Kashmir, it is very unfortunate. It will give a setback to anybody," Khurshid further said. While the senior leadership made no comment on Khurshid's remarks, unease within the party has been brewing ever since the government announced the names for the 51 members of the all-party delegations. The Congress had accused the Modi government of "complete insincerity" and for playing "cheap political games" while highlighting that "regrettably" only one of the four names suggested by the Congress leadership has been included. However, the opposition party relented, allowing "eminent" party members selected by the government to go with the delegations and make their contribution. The Congress had submitted the names of Anand Sharma, Gaurav Gogoi, Syed Naseer Hussain, and Amrinder Singh Raja Warring. However, the delegation finalised by the government includes Shashi Tharoor who is leading a delegation. There are also Manish Tewari, Anand Sharma, Salman Khurshid and Amar Singh in other delegations.

"In Pak, nobody seems to be in control," All-Party Delegation member Salman Khurshid says

Jakarta [Indonesia], May 31 (ANI): Former Minister of External Affairs and Congress leader Salman Khurshid on Friday noted that violations continued on the Pakistani side, suggesting a lack of control over its military actions even after a ceasefire was reached. Khurshid, a member of the All-Party Delegation, highlighted the apparent chaos within Pakistan, citing factions within the army vying for power and the civilian government's lack of control. Despite this, he praised India's restraint and patience in the face of such challenges. 'But the shelling across the border and the LoC continued for at least three or four hours. There were violations of the ceasefire once again, making it very clear that in Pakistan, nobody seems to be in control. The civilian government doesn't seem to be in control. There are factions within the army, each vying with each other to become powerful. Nevertheless, we showed restraint and patience,' added Khurshid. Khurshid clarified that India did not initiate contact with Pakistan, but rather received a call from Pakistan's DGMO for cessation of hostilities during Operation Sindoor. The all-party delegation member explained that India stopped its actions when Pakistan's DGMO requested for cessation of hostilities and India refrained from further attacks, dismissing claims as 'complete hogwash.' 'Because one of you asked, why did we stop? It's complete hogwash for anyone to say that we called them (Pakistan) first. Why would we call them first? Who was at the receiving end by the time the calls were made? It is more than clear to everybody that the call came from the DGMO of Pakistan to the DGMO of India. And we stopped when they said 'Let's stop'... And we then didn't send any further attacks on them,' he said while interacting with the indian-community,'Indian community in Jakarta, addressing questions about India's response to Pakistan's actions. Khurshid emphasised India's aspirations to greatness and stressed that no one should distract India from its path to achieving this goal. 'India is waiting to be great. Nobody distract us or interfere with that passage of ours. That is why it is important for us to show our strength,' said the Congress leader. Khurshid urged Pakistan to understand India's demand to give up terrorism, highlighting the importance of showing strength. He emphasized that India's message is clear and united, transcending party lines. He praised the all-party delegation's visit, comprising members from both the ruling party and opposition. Khurshid highlighted that their unity demonstrates India's collective commitment to the country's interests, rather than individual party affiliations. 'If there is any sense in Pakistan, they will understand our only demand: give up terrorism... Some of my colleagues are not from the ruling party. The ruling party could have come alone to bring this message, but they came with us to give India's message... However, sadly, this is not what we hear from India. Somebody is saying that he is supporting the BJP or the Congress, but I am proud that we are here together because we are not supporting each other's parties, we are supporting one simple idea called India...,' he said. The delegation, led by JD-U MP Sanjay Kumar Jha, includes Aparajita Sarangi (BJP), TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee, Brij Lala (BJP), John Brittas (CPI-M), Pradan Baruah (BJP), Hemang Joshi (BJP), Salman Khurshid, and Mohan a diplomatic outreach following Operation Sindoor, the Modi government has formed seven multi-party delegations to inform nations about Pakistan's links to terrorism and India's strong message of zero tolerance for terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. Operation Sindoor was launched on May 7 as a decisive military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack by Pak-sponsored terrorists in which 26 people were killed.
