Police in Kinston continuing efforts to reduce violent, gun-related crimes
KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) — The Kinston Police Department is continuing to combat violent crimes and gun violence.
KPD Chief Kieth Goyette said they emphasize officer safety when responding to calls involving a shooting. This week, officers responded to a person shot and found an illegally concealed gun.
'In this particular incident that we're talking about, this gentleman was shot in the lower leg. So, not as serious as other shootings, but still, you want to give that person the care that they need, and we actually put a tourniquet on that person's leg to make sure that we stop the bleeding,' Chief Goyette said. 'You also want to check your surroundings. You never know if a suspect's going to be there or those involved and you want to be careful yourself. You want to make sure that you're always wearing a bulletproof vest, that you're safe.'
The Kinston Police Department is also welcoming a new K9 handler and dog to the squad.
