Willie Mullins snaps up ‘promising' new jockey who rode incredible 150-1 winner

WILLIE MULLINS has snapped up a 'promising' new jockey - as an army of new recruits start arriving at his Closutton HQ. Anna McGuinness banged in her first winner for the all-conquering trainer with victory aboard the JP McManus-owned I Am River at Kilbeggan on Sunday. 2 2 Sent off 15-8, the six-year-old made all after 517 days off to win by two-and-a-quarter lengths from Gavin Cromwell's 100-30 In The Trenches. McGuinness came in for praise from McManus' racing manager Frank Berry afterwards. And this success could pave the way to a whole load more rides in the future. She got the leg up on Mullins' A Penny A Hundred in the recent Mayo National at Ballinrobe, finishing third and picking up a cheque for £7,500. Victory on I Am River came on just her third ride for Mullins - who keeps a close eye on Anna when she rides work at his Cork yard. Beaming Berry said: "The horse jumped great and got a lovely ride from Anna. "She got him into a lovely rhythm, and you'd be delighted with him. "Anna is riding out in Willie's and finished third in the Mayo National and couldn't have done better." Incredibly, McGuinness' first ever win came on freak 150-1 outsider Feast in a Downpatrick bumper in July 2023. Labelled a very 'promising' conditional rider, McGuinness has three career wins but will surely bang in a load more given the chance. Her addition to Mullins ' jockey ranks comes as he continues to add fresh talent to his massive squad of horses. Among them is £125,000 point-to-point purchase Bentraghhill. Mullins' trusted right-hand man Harold Kirk gave the winning bid for the 'gorgeous' four-year-old at the sales last week. He comes from Wilson Dennison, who previously owned Mullins stars Yorkhill, Shaneshill and Bellshill. Meanwhile, Audrey Turley, who owns Galopin Des Champs, has sent Looking For Eight to Mullins. And point-to-point winner Arcadian Emperor is another to have arrived recently. That lot will be joined by . . Remember to gamble responsibly A responsible gambler is someone who:

Eurovision hopeful Emmy and team Ireland jet off to Basel for rehearsals ahead of song contest

Norwegian singer Emmy (24) won RTÉ's Eurosong contest in February with her song Laika Party, written alongside Kilbeggan, Co Westmeath songwriter Larissa Tormey. Emmy, her brother Erlend Guttulsrud Kristiansen and dancers Vilde Skorstad, Karin Aaeng Stuge, Kristiane Lindvik and Christiane Bergersen were in Oslo Airport today ahead of their flight out to Basel for the contest. In a social media post earlier today, Emmy said she was delayed on her way to the airport: "One hour delayed to the airport because of a storm that made some trees fall down and block the road. Stressed? Yess." The Irish Eurovision team's first rehearsal will take place tomorrow in St Jakobshalle in Basel ahead of the semi-finals. The first semi-final will air on Tuesday, with Emmy set to perform in the second-semi final on Thursday, May 15, which is set to air from 8pm on RTÉ 2 and the RTÉ Player. This year's Eurovision grand final will be held on Saturday, May 17.

Sup Of Red can take next step in Tipperary

Two meetings take place this evening, with Tipperary firing its opening salvo for the Flat season, and Kilbeggan doing likewise for its summer season of National Hunt racing. Two-year-old Sup Of Red made a most promising start to her career when runner-up in a fillies' maiden in Cork and she can go one place better in the Irish EBF Median Sires Maiden. Jack Davison's filly attracted heavy support on that occasion, but she was a shade slow from stalls and consequently found herself caught behind in a bit of a pocket at a crucial juncture. The winner, Baby Basma, was also well fancied on the day and got first run. Whether that was the difference between winning and losing is impossible to ascertain, but there was much to like about the way the runner-up moved away from the remainder of the field as she went in vain chase of the leader. She ought to be better for that experience and, although she is taking on colts and filles this time, she should be a tough nut to crack. Noodles and Arugam Bay, who finished third and fifth respectively in a maiden won by Miami Destination, showed equal promise and command respect. Unless Ger Lyons' newcomer, Lil' Angel, is nicely above average, the Jessica Harrington-trained Passing Phase should finally get off the mark in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden. The Lope De Vega gelding posted his best effort of last season when touched off in a juvenile maiden at this venue, and the form of that race has worked out well, with winner Sir Yoshi climbing to a mark of 97, while third-placed Rudi's Apple fared better by earning a three-figure assessment. Off for four months after that outing, Passing Phase finished a well-beaten second behind the smart Likedbymike on his only subsequent start at two. On return, at the Curragh, he made a big mid-race move to challenge winner Glen To Glen, but it cost him late as he lost second place to subsequent winner Mathan. Back to five furlongs and with that run behind him, he looks ready to strike. Lil' Angel's place in the market should be significant and if she is not particularly strong in the ring, Bobbi Rosa will be the one to give the selection most to think about. In Kilbeggan, Midnight Fairy can put a first winning mark on her card by taking the first division of the Follow Kilbeggan On Instagram Handicap Hurdle. On the back of three modest efforts in maidens, the Terence O'Brien-trained mare made her handicap debut earlier this month in Limerick and found only Flemens Interest too good. That was a significant step up on previous efforts and it looked even better when the winner followed up off a 10lbs higher mark. A sister to a three-time winner, the lightly raced seven-year-old needs to make up for lost time, and this looks like a decent opportunity if she can build on the promise of that Limerick effort.
