Killeen ISD Honors Largest Group of Cord Recipients

Killeen, Tx (FOX 44) – More than 500 seniors received a purple and white braided cord symbolizing completion of a professional certification. These certifications were done through the KISD Career Center and ranged from teaching to video game design, robotics, culinary skills, healthcare, welding and much more. 'Wearing a purple and white cord represents not just achievement, but transformation,' said KISD Director of CTE Patrice Robinson. 'These cords symbolize your growth, the skills you gained, the friendships you formed and the meaningful experiences you have had in KISD and in Career and Technical Education.' Students were honored for their hard work and reflected on the journey they took to get to that moment. Carlos Diaz-Torres, one of the seniors receiving a cord put it simply stating, 'We learned that success doesn't come gift-wrapped, but it comes in the form of late nights, tough feedback and moments you seriously think about quitting, and I had those moments.'. The more than 500 seniors stepped across the Killeen Civic and Conference Center on Thursday to receive their cords. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Former legion branch president, vice-president accused of stealing $60K from now-closed facility

The former president and vice-president of the now-shuttered Brooklands and Weston Legion — at the time the second-oldest branch in the country — are being accused of stealing $60,000 from its coffers. Winnipeg police said Thursday a 70-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman are facing charges of theft over $5,000 and fraud over $5,000. Police said the pair were arrested at their residence in Winnipeg Beach Wednesday. The couple, identified by former Legion members as Rob Gault and Arlene Holmes, were released on a promise to appear in court. No court date has been set. Steve Killeen, who became president after Gault at the No. 2 branch of the legion, and his wife Karin Peterson, who organized fundraising events there until provincial command suddenly padlocked the Logan Avenue facility's doors in February, said they are relieved to hear charges were laid. 'I'm just surprised it took this long,' Killeen said. 'I thought it would have been a lot quicker. 'He was in charge for 17 years… $60,000 would have helped us keep it open.' 'I've been exonerated,' Peterson said. 'Our hands are clean. I didn't call the police, but I guess you could say I was the first whistleblower. 'People said certain things wouldn't have happened if (Gault) was here, but now people know.' Gault and Holmes could not be reached for comment. No one from the Royal Canadian Legion Manitoba and Northwest Ontario Command could be reached for comment. Nujma Bond, the legion's national spokesperson, said 'the legion's volunteers are its foundation and they do amazing work across Canada, so it's extremely disappointing to have such an allegation surface. 'This sort of situation is unusual and not something our independent provincial commands report as a regular concern. We take great pride in our thousands of volunteers who work daily to ensure that our veterans, their families, and communities are supported.' Legions across the country were first founded during the latter part of the First World War, when injured veterans began returning home. A war memorial was built outside the Brooklands and Weston Branch in 1935. At the time of its closure, the branch at 1613 Logan Ave., was believed to be the oldest still in operation across the country. Police said its financial crimes unit launched an investigation in December 2023 after receiving a tip. The investigation determined a man and a woman, with 'designated operational positions' and who were not in paid positions, had access to the branch's bank account and signing authority. Police said they found that between May 2020 and April 2023, the pair allegedly diverted about $60,000 into their bank account, which they used 'for personal gain'. As well, the funds were also used to pay the man an honorarium to 'which he was not entitled.' Killeen said when he was on the board Gault would never tell other board members how the branch was doing financially. 'No one was aware of the finances,' he said. 'You had two people in one household doing the finances. They were co-signing cheques, and that just breaks every rule in the book.' THG Fulfil says late cut-off for next-day delivery drives higher sales

THG Ingenuity had some interesting news this week about the value of next-day delivery and free delivery for e-tail orders. The e-commerce solutions provider (which is now a privately held company after THG separated it out last year) operates its THG Fulfil arm and said that following an analysis of around 40 million customer orders, its next-day delivery offer (which has a later-than-most cut-off time) 'is driving customer acquisition and higher value orders for brands and retailers' in the beauty and wellness & nutrition sectors. The company allows 'next-day' delivery (NDD) for orders placed up until 1am (effectively making it same-day) and it said 23% of NDD orders now come from first-time customers after midnight. The analysis also showed that between 10pm-11pm, a fifth (20%) of wellness & nutrition NDD orders come from first-time customers, with this rising to nearly a quarter (23%) between 12am-1am. For beauty consumers, where urgency tends to be lower, 8% of post-10pm orders come from new customers. THG itself largely uses THG Fulfil for its Beauty division fulfilment. The company said the data shows 'THG Fulfil has captured the late-night shopper demand with its market-leading 1am NDD offering'. 'The trend is clear. Late-night fulfilment drives commercial success: our customers are receiving new orders while their competitors sleep,' said Tom Killeen THG Ingenuity COO. THG Fulfil's data analysis shows that 82% of all NDD orders are placed after 2pm, and more than a quarter (27%) are placed after 10pm (up 7% versus 2024), 'offering a clear incentive for both customers and retailers to extend NDD order periods as late as possible'. The analysis also reveals that 'free delivery has generated an 11% uplift in subsequent order value, delivering an impressive 10x return on investment'. Killeen added: 'We've seen first-hand how fulfilment can make or break customer experience and brand reputation in e-commerce. We've always believed fulfilment is a growth driver, impacting customer retention and acquisition – our data now confirms that delivering on the demand for immediacy has a direct impact on new customer acquisition and attracting high-value shoppers willing to pay for premium, rapid delivery via multiple options.'
