Valuable Pokémon cards stolen in overnight break-in

KILLEEN, Texas (FOX 44) – A Killeen business is recovering after $100,000 worth of Pokémon cards and cash were taken during an overnight break-in. Evolutions Trading announced on its Facebook page that the store was broken into at approximately 1:40 a.m. Monday. Among the high-value items taken were a Skyridge Umbreon, a Gold Star Charizard and a FireRed LeafGreen Charizard EX. Central Texas Law Enforcement Honor Fallen Officers

Central Texas (FOX 44) — Both the Waco and Killeen Police Departments hosted this year's Police Officer Memorial Ceremonies in honor of Central Texas officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities last year. 'As officers, we take an oath to serve our communities, and we take that very seriously. Unfortunately, sometimes we lose our lives, but that's what we're here to do. We have to make sure our community is safe, and sometimes it takes a lot of sacrifice, in some cases, self-sacrifice,' said Chief Pete Lopez, with the Killeen Police Department. Earlier this week, Chief Lopez attended a candlelight vigil in Washington, D.C. to honor fallen officers across the nation. 'We lost about 345 officers nationwide, and I was one of the VIP's who was able to participate in that ceremony. Each officer had their name spoken, that way we know as a nation their names and the day they died so we can memorialize them forever,' he said. That sacrifice extends beyond the badge to the families left behind. Not only did both police departments honor their fallen brothers and sisters in uniform, but they honored those officers' families as well. 'We never forget the sacrifices that they made and that we never forget the families who also made sacrifices, not just when their loved one was here, but when their loved one's lives were lost,' said Chief Sherly Victorian with the Waco Police Department. The ceremonies included a 21-gun salute, the reading of names of fallen officers, tributes through music, and more — all serving as reminders that their service will never be forgotten. 'They will always be a part of our family, and that we will always honor their loved one's memory,' Chief Victorian added. These ceremonies were a part of the National Police Week, where communities across the country and Central Texas stand united in gratitude, vowing to remember the fallen and to support those who carry their legacy forward. On Sunday, May 11, Captain Marvin Taylor III of the Killeen Fire Department had just left a hospital in Austin when the fatal accident occurred, the city of Killeen said. Taylor was 'en route to pick up his other children when his vehicle was struck from behind,' the city added. The dad planned on introducing his four children to the new baby when the other vehicle hit him from the rear at a high rate of speed at about 1:05 a.m. local time, police told CBS affiliate KWTX. An officer from the Austin Police Department was nearby when the crash occurred and provided aid until first responders arrived. Taylor was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver of the other vehicle was taken into custody, the outlet reported. The City of Killeen, the Killeen Police Department and Killeen Fire Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's requests for comment. 'He was a highly respected and decorated member of our Fire Department,' the department said. Taylor had served since 2014 and recently started working in the training division. 'Captain Taylor was known for his dedication, leadership, and countless deployments with Texas A&M Task Force 1 and TIFMAS,' the department continued. 'He will be remembered not only for his service, but for the impact he made on those around him.' In a separate statement, the Killeen Police Department said they were 'deeply saddened' by the captain's death. 'Our thoughts and prayers are with the KFD family and Captain Taylor's loved ones during this difficult time,' police continued. The day after the crash, on Monday, May 12, the city's mayor, Mayor Debbie Nash-King, said in a statement that she 'offers her prayers, support and condolences to the family of Killeen Fire Captain Marvin Taylor, as well as his fellow comrades at the fire department.' Killeen Community Honors Crime Victims During National Crime Victims' Rights Week

KILLEEN, Texas (FOX 44) — Recognizing National Crime Victims' Rights Week, the Killeen Police Department hosted a heartfelt event on Monday, bringing the community together to honor local crime victims and emphasize the importance of victims' rights. According to Killeen Chief of Police Pedro Lopez, the department's Victim Services Unit supported over 1,700 crime victims in 2024 alone. To mark the occasion, the department invited community members to participate in a symbolic act of solidarity—placing ribbons along the streets in support of victims. Each ribbon's color represents a different crime victim. Attendee Lisa Hatfield expressed her appreciation for the turnout: 'It's wonderful to see all of these people, many of them from different disciplines within Bell County, but also the community coming out of support to show that they understand the need for these services and why it is so important to support victims, to help them throughout the healing process.' Among those showing support was domestic violence survivor Chicara Wheeler, who attended the ribbon event for the second consecutive year. 'Coming out here is a way to show my support of the other victims who didn't make it, are surviving. Still trying to survive through this.' Wheeler shared that the act of placing the ribbons in the trees made her feel empowered and visible. 'My life was completely, almost taken, and to experienced the homelessness that we had to endure. But I know God turns things around for a reason and there's a reason and a purpose why I'm still here, and why other survivors are here.' Kimberly Isette, the Crime Victim Liaison at Killeen PD, stressed the importance of raising awareness about available resources for victims. 'If anyone has questions about their rights as a victim of crime, or as a survivor or family member of a crime victim, they can reach out to their local law enforcement agency to get those rights. We can support them throughout the entire process, including prosecution and court.' The ribbons placed along Killeen's streets will remain throughout National Crime Victims' Rights Week, symbolizing the community's commitment to honoring victims and ensuring they are not alone in their journey. Man accused of fleeing police in wild drive arrested

Killeen, Tx (FOX 44) – A man whose car door struck a Killeen police officer as it fled and whose abandoned car was found with cocaine nearby has been found and arrested. Killeen Police Department spokesperson Ofelia Miramontez said the story started on March 19th when a Killeen police officer checked what he thought was suspicious activity. It was about 12:58 a.m. as he conducting a patrol check of the Travel Lodge parking lot at 810 East Central Texas Expressway. He noticed a Chrysler 300 parked with its engine running. Officers approached the vehicle to make contact with the occupant. Miramontez said as one officer neared the vehicle, he observed a man holding a large bag containing a white, powdery substance. Officers instructed the man to get out of the car, but he refused. The driver then put the car in reverse and fled the scene, striking an officer with the passenger door in the process. Additional officers in the area witnessed the vehicle driving westbound in the eastbound lanes, traveling against traffic as the driver fled. The car was later found abandoned in the 2300 block of Andover Drive. About 20 feet from the vehicle officers found a clear bag containing a white, powdery substance that field tested with a presumptive presence of cocaine. Man held in 2023 Killeen car to car shooting A search of the vehicle turned up a backpack containing paperwork belonging to the man developed as a suspect. The case was presented to the Bell County District Attorney's Office, which issued a complaint for evading arrest with a vehicle. Justice of the Peace Nicola James then issued an arrest warrant.
