Photo: GLASGOW: Kim Le Court won the sprint race against Kristen Faulkner on the first stage of the Tour of Britain Women as the two riders broke away on the final major climb of the race day. Le Court, riding for AG Insurance-Soudal, and Faulkner, riding for EF Education-Oatly, gained their lead on Langburn's Bank, which is about 37 km from the finish line in Redcar. With her win, Le Court expressed: 'I am very happy, not just with this victory, but also with being back here… We came into this stage with a plan and executed it perfectly. I attacked, had Kristen come with me, and we managed to hold off the chasers, both of us being strong engines.' The athlete added: 'It was pretty close at the finish, but I am delighted I could pull it off. I now look forward to the next stages, where we want to fight for some more good results.' With the recent outcomes, Kim Le Court now leads the four-stage Tour of Britain Women by five seconds. Highlights of the race Stage one of the 82-km Tour of Britain Women began in Dalby Forest and ended in Redcar, and the route has two classified climbs. The race came alive on the descent before the second climb, Langburn's Bank. Kim Le Court (AG Insurance-Soudal) attacked with 37 km to go and was later joined by Kristen Faulkner (EF Education-Oatly) and Anna Henderson (Lidl-Trek). Le Court went on the climb alone, winning the Queen of the Mountains points. Faulkner then rejoined her on the descent, and the pair gained about 30 seconds on the chasing group. The peloton couldn't close the gap despite the efforts from FDJ-Suez and Movistar. Faulkner almost crashed into a traffic island with 15 km to go, but Le Court waited for her break partner, knowing she needed the help. The breakaway duo worked together to reach the finish line. Le Court launched the sprint first and held off Faulkner for the win. Lorena Wiebes (SD Worx-Protime) placed third from the peloton. Kim le Court got the better of Kristen Faulkner in a two-up sprint finish to win the first stage of the Tour of Britain pair attacked and went clear of the peloton with 30km to go and then held off the chasing Le Court, 29, launched her sprint from the front with just over 200m to go and outlasted the American Olympic road race champion to the Wiebes led home a much-reduced bunch in third, five seconds behind, while British riders Cat Ferguson and Millie Couzens finished fifth and champion Lizzie Deignan finished 20th as she races in Britain for the final time before retiring. Last year Le Court became the first Mauritian rider to compete in the World Tour, and she won the prestigious Liege-Bastogne-Liege one-day race in April. The four-day Tour of Britain Women began with an 81.5km stage in North Yorkshire between Dalby Forest and riders faced two classified climbs, at Blakey Ridge and Langburn's Bank, with Le Court starting her attack at the bottom of the latter, with Faulkner in the lead pair the peloton split, with FDJ-Suez and Movistar leading the chase from a reduced group which was 34 seconds behind with 28km to almost crashed out of the race with 15km to go, misjudging a corner and narrowly avoiding a traffic island. Le Court waited for her to regain momentum and the two continued with their break until the finish, before winning the sprint to take the leader's second stage is over a 114.3km route between Hartlepool and Saltburn-by-the-sea.

LIEGE, BELGIUM - Mauritian rider Kim Le Court sprung a surprise on Sunday by becoming the first African cyclist to win the women's Liege-Bastogne-Liege. The 29-year-old AG Insurance-Soudal rider scored the biggest win of her career by beating Dutch pair Puck Pieterse and Demi Vollering in a four-way sprint, with French rider Cedrine Kerbaol just missing out on the podium. "I can't believe it. On the Cote de La Roche-aux-Faucons (13km from the line), I was completely out of breath," she said. "I can't believe I won ahead of the stars of the peloton." Le Court has enjoyed an excellent classics season, taking fifth in the Milan-San Remo and the Tour of Flanders. World road race champion Lotte Kopecky, the big favourite for the ninth edition of the race, controlled the sprint of the chasing pack to finish fifth.
