The launch ceremony was attended by South Korean Ambassador Kim Pil-woo, Head of the Korean Delegation Kim Hak-Do, and representatives from the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation. The initiative aims to foster the exchange of expertise between Jordan and South Korea in renewable energy and energy efficiency, leveraging Korea's experience in policy development and implementation to support Jordan's goals of achieving energy security and environmental sustainability, according to an Energy Ministry statement. The KSP includes a series of activities aimed at facilitating technical and institutional knowledge-sharing, along with targeted capacity-building efforts for JREEEF staff. These efforts aim to enhance the fund's capabilities in policy analysis, programme design, and efficient implementation. As part of the programme, a specialised financial study would also be conducted to measure the impact of JREEEF's projects on reducing the national energy bill. The findings are expected to support the development of more effective energy-related fiscal policies and promote sustainable savings over the long term. JREEEF Director Rasmi Hamzeh highlighted the significance of the renewed partnership with KOTRA, describing it as a continuation of the strong, results-oriented cooperation between the two sides. Hamzeh noted that the programme will prioritise technical and financial assessments of current initiatives and the development of staff competencies to support future projects. KOTRA representative expressed appreciation for the strategic partnership with Jordan, emphasising that the initiative reflects South Korea's broader commitment to supporting energy development in partner countries through knowledge exchange and the sharing of successful practices. The programme is part of JREEEF's broader vision to support Jordan's shift toward clean, sustainable energy and to boost energy efficiency across all sectors by adopting international best practices tailored to the Kingdom's national priorities. South Korea donates $1.5m to WFP in support of refugee aid in Jordan
South Korea donates $1.5 million to the WFP in Jordan to support its response to refugees (Petra photo) AMMAN — South Korea on Sunday donated $1.5 million to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in the Kingdom to support its response to refugees. South Korean Ambassador to Jordan Kim Pil-woo stressed his country's commitment to the WFP to save the lives of refugees. He noted that since 2011, Seoul has contributed more than $32 million to refugees in Jordan through various international organisations, including WFP, and that the new aid is a reiteration of that role. The contribution will enable the WFP to continue providing cash aid, at a reduced rate, for one month to 60,000 vulnerable refugees in refugee camps and host communities across Jordan, he said, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. WFP Resident Representative and Country Director Alberto Correa Mendez expressed his appreciation for the donation. The WFP currently provides cash aid to 310,000 refugees in the kingdom, most of them Syrians, in order to help meet basic food needs.

The initiative will be supported by regional funding from KOICA with $10.6 million (covering Jordan, Iran and Yemen) and an additional $760,000 from the IFRC, where $2.2 million from the project will be allocated to Jordan. During a ceremony at JNRCS headquarters, the initiative was officially announced in the presence of Korean Ambassador to Amman Kim Pil-woo, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. The project, spanning 2024–2026, will be implemented in Irbid, Mafraq and Northern Shuna with the support of KOICA and IFRC, targeting communities facing severe water stress. JNRCS President Mohammad Hadid said: "We will work hand in hand with local communities, IFRC, and KOICA to boost community capacity and implement sustainable water management practices in Southern Shuna District. Our goal is to mitigate water conflicts and build resilience, ensuring a secure future for the community." KOICA, representing the government of South Korea, reaffirmed its commitment to tackling water insecurity as a pathway to regional stability and development. The Korean ambassador said: "Through this transformative three-year initiative, the IFRC, in partnership with the Jordan Red Crescent and KOICA, aims to prevent and reduce water-related stress, tensions, and conflicts at the community level. "This project is dedicated to creating sustainable and lasting solutions in water-stressed and fragile regions like Jordan, Yemen, and Iran, where conflict, poverty, and environmental degradation exacerbate water security risks," the diplomat added. "The IFRC is committed to supporting local communities in severely water-stressed regions. In Jordan, we aim to develop joint responses to water challenges by improving water services, resource management and ecosystems while fostering stability and peace," said Atta Durrani, IFRC Head of Delegation in Jordan.
