Four boundary-pushing young artists nominated for Korea Artist Prize 2025

Selected artist's new works will be shown starting in August The annual Korea Artist Prize 2025 will introduce young Korean artists who push the boundaries of medium and discourse. The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea announced the four finalists for the Korea Artist Prize 2025, whose new works will be on view from August to February 2026. The winner will be announced in January after evaluations by the judging committee and public discussions with the artists. Artist Kim Young-eun, who focuses on sound and listening in a historical context and human narratives, will create a new work that explores ways of listening in a community of migrants and diaspora. Painter Kim Ji-pyeong is an artist who overturns the ideas found in traditional Eastern paintings, critically interpreting gender issues and the division of the Korean Peninsula. The artist collective Unmake Lab, formed in 2016 by Choi Bin-na and Song Soo-yon, has focused on combining Korea's history of industrial development with artificial intelligence elements such as datasets and computer vision. Meanwhile, interdisciplinary artist Im Young-joo examines the processes by which superstitions, beliefs and religious faiths are accepted and shaped in Korean society through video, installations, performance and virtual reality. 'By selecting important Korean artists each year since 2012 and sharing their bodies of work with a wide audience through the support of the SBS Foundation, the MMCA has been broadening the base for Korean art,' said Kim Sung-hee, director of MMCA. The Korea Artist Prize 2024 was awarded to kinetic sculpture artist Yang Jung-uk in recognition of his creative approach to the medium and the humanistic stories depicted in his work.

MMCA unveils 4 finalists for 2025 Korea Artist Award

The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art announced Monday the four finalists for the 2025 Korea Artist Award. The finalists are Kim Young-eun, who explores sound as a medium shaped by political and historical contexts; Kim Ji-pyeong, who critiques traditional perspectives in oriental brush-and-ink paintings; Im Young-zoo, who examines the reception of myth and religious faith in Korea through various media, including video, installation and performance; and the artist collective Unmake Lab, which intertwines Korea's industrial development with artificial intelligence to reimagine the country's social and ecological landscapes. Since 2012, the MMCA has co-sponsored the annual prize with the SBS Culture Foundation to recognize outstanding artists with keen insight into society and art. Each finalist receives 50 million won ($34,800) to support their artwork, with the final winner receiving an additional 10 million won. The museum will showcase the finalists' works in an exhibition running from Aug. 29 to Feb. 22 next year. (Yonhap)
