Mansfield Agriculture Committee to host farmers at forum Thursday
MANSFIELD — The Town of Mansfield's Agriculture Committee will host the annual Farmers Forum, where local farmers and legislators will share their plans and challenges. The forum will be held on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Lenard Hall, 450 S. Eagleville Road, Mansfield. The forum will feature keynote speaker Dr. Kimberly Stoner, formerly of the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station and now the director of Advocacy for the Northeast Organic Farming Association.

Constitutional amendment would give disadvantaged communities the right to clean resources
HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — Environmental advocates and lawmakers from both parties were at the Legislative Office Building Tuesday, advocating for a constitutional amendment that would give disadvantaged communities the right to clean air, water and soil. 'I believe it is absolutely essential, because these young people said it best. It is a right,' Republican State Senator Tony Hwang said. Lobbyists throw support behind proposed climate change bills at the capitol Kimberly Stoner with the Northeast Organic Farming Association said the legislation would empower disadvantaged Connecticut communities and farmers, who have been hit with increased flooding and droughts. 'It strengthens their advocacy and if they need to, they can also engage in litigation. They can sue the state to deal with problems with permits that should not be given,' Stoner said. The youngest advocate at the event, 10-year-old Nora Romeo, is passionate about the environment. She said her generation deserves to inherit a clean earth. 'In their childhood they got to play outside and see many squirrels and animals everywhere. We go outside and don't see that many plants and animals and there's more wildfires.' She's not the only one taking a stand. University of Connecticut student Sreya Mothukuri is with Sustainable Fairfield and said it's important for young people to get involved. 'When I grow older, I want to be able to live in an environment that's clean and safe and healthy,' she said. The Government Administration and Elections Committee still has to vote on the legislation. If it passes, it will then go out of committee to the Senate for further consideration.
