Roadwork in northwest Kansas will create 75-mile detour
PORTIS, Kan. (KSNW) – Planned road construction in northwest Kansas will create a 75-mile detour.
Starting Monday, March 17, the Kansas Department of Transportation will close just a 3.5-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 281 between the U.S. 24 Junction and Portis. Traffic will be detoured onto U.S. 24 or U.S. 36 Highways via U.S. Highway 183.

This creates a detour of over 75 miles because there are no paved county roads that can be used as a bypass around the construction. The road will remain closed until at least late November, when work is scheduled to be completed.
King Construction of Hesston is the primary contractor for the $18.9 million project, part of the Eisenhower Legacy Transportation Program.
