AMMAN: Jordan's government on Wednesday began evacuating four child cancer patients and 12 family members from Gaza. They are the second group of patients evacuated for treatment under the Jordan Medical Corridor initiative, started in March this year, that aims to treat 2,000 Gazan children. The children and their families were evacuated by the Royal Jordanian Air Force in cooperation with the World Health Organization and the Ministry of Health. They will be treated at the King Hussein Cancer Center. The first evacuees were 29 children and 44 family members. Seventeen of these children have since returned to Gaza with their families after completing their treatment.

King inaugurates King Hussein Cancer Center in Aqaba

On Thursday, His Majesty King Abdullah II inaugurated the King Hussein Cancer Center building in Aqaba, which aims to provide medical services to cancer patients covered by the center, as well as residents of southern governorates in need of diagnostic tests. The facility consists of four floors with a total area of approximately 6,740 square meters. It includes departments for chemotherapy, radiology, an early detection unit, oncology clinics, a laboratory, and a pharmacy. The center was built and equipped with the latest technology at an estimated cost of JD 15 million. During his visit, King Abdullah toured the center, which offers 100 job opportunities for medical staff and support services from the local communities of southern Jordan. He also inspected the chemotherapy department. In a speech at the opening ceremony, Her Royal Highness Princess Ghida Talal, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation and Center, highlighted that the center embodies His Majesty's vision of providing advanced medical care for cancer patients in southern Jordan, allowing them to receive treatment without having to travel far from their families. She emphasized that the increasing number of cancer patients necessitates expanding the center's services through a network that extends across the Kingdom. Over the past 24 years since its establishment, the center has become a source of hope for thousands of Jordanian and Arab patients. Princess Ghida also noted that the center continues to receive many cancer patients from Gaza, ensuring they receive and complete their treatment before returning home safely, with direct support from King Abdullah and Queen Rania Al Abdullah. For his part, Aqaba Governor Khaled Al-Hajjaj highlighted the importance of establishing the center in Aqaba, which saves time and effort for cancer patients in the southern governorates who benefit from its services. He also spoke about his own journey battling cancer and recovering at the King Hussein Cancer Center. During the ceremony, and in the presence of King Abdullah, Princess Ghida honored donors and institutions that contributed to the new project.
