New Commanders DL Javon Kinlaw is already a fan favorite

On Monday, the NFL world was shocked when the Washington Commanders agreed to terms with former first-round pick Javon Kinlaw. Not because the Commanders signed Kinlaw, but because they gave him a three-year deal worth $45 million with $30 million guaranteed. San Francisco fans couldn't believe it, and neither could Jets fans. Kinlaw spent four seasons with the 49ers and last season with the Jets. Injuries were an issue for Kinlaw with the 49ers, and, let's be honest, everyone with the New York Jets stunk in 2024. On Friday, Kinlaw, like other Washington free-agent additions and re-signings before him, was introduced to the local media via Zoom. Kinlaw didn't take long to make a positive impression on Commanders fans. "I grew up in Northeast D.C., so I'm a real Skins fan, point blank. Period." Kinlaw said. "When I was growing up, Trent Williams was on the team, and Jordan Reed and I got to be teammates with them guys my rookie year. For me to be able to be on this team now is a full-circle moment for me." Javon Kinlaw: "I grew up in northeast D.C., so I'm a real Skins fan. Point blank, period." — Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) March 14, 2025 That's the perfect way to get fans on your side: mention the old team nickname and reveal you grew up a fan. Being from D.C., Kinlaw likely was a fan, and returning to play for his hometown means something special to him. And it sounds like he's already won over many fans. That's all I need to know — MadHatter LJ 🎩🐷 (@MadHatter_LJ) March 14, 2025 And another: This is why I can't be taken serious, now I'm getting his jersey 😂 — Tim Meek (@IndySkinsFan) March 14, 2025 We told you: "Skins fan."My new favorite player. 😀 — Dale Betterton (@DaleBetterton) March 14, 2025 Kinlaw paid close attention to the Commanders' resurgence last season. The team went from a four-win team to 12 regular-season wins and played in the NFC championship game. He now hopes to be a part of the team that leads the franchise to its first Super Bowl championship since the 1991 season. There's a lot to like about Kinlaw, beginning with his size (6-foot-5, 319) and age (27). Washington general manager Adam Peters knows him well. Peters was the assistant GM in San Francisco before coming to the Commanders last year. Peters and head coach Dan Quinn had a plan this offseason to fix the trenches, and Kinlaw is a major part of that plan. Despite the initial shock, Washington fans should embrace Kinlaw and trust Peters and Quinn. They've earned the benefit of the doubt. Losing Jourdan Lewis is tough hit for Cowboys

Follow the latest updates around the league as free agency begins Getty Images Losing Lewis is a tough blow to the Cowboys, who drafted the 29-year-old cornerback out of Michigan in the third round in 2017. Lewis returned from a career-threatening injury in 2022 to play at a high level the past two seasons. He became the pillar of consistency in the secondary, as both Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland dealt with their own extended absences due to injuries. Cornerback now becomes an even bigger need for the Cowboys this offseason. They have Bland, who is going into a contract year and will command a big pay-day soon, but very little stability otherwise. Diggs' return from his late-season injury last year could stretch throughout training camp and even possibly into the early part of the regular season. Getty Images Washington has agreed to terms with Kinlaw, a team source confirmed to The Athletic . According to ESPN, it's a three-year, $45 million deal with $30 million guaranteed. Kinlaw, the 14th selection in the 2020 NFL Draft, played his first four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers with Washington general manager Adam Peters in the front office. He joined the New York Jets in 2024. Injuries, including a torn ACL, limited him to 41 games — 28 starts — with the 49ers. Kinlaw, who spent part of his childhood in the Washington area, did play 17 games in a reserve role with the Jets. He played 61 percent of New York's defensive snaps and registered a career-high 4 1/2 sacks. Washington needed options behind projected starters Daron Payne and Johnny Newton. More big bodies are required to fill out the rotation. Free agents Sheldon Day and Jalyn Holmes could be re-signed. GO FURTHER Commanders free-agency tracker: A look at Washington's signings, trades and cuts Per reports, LT Dan Moore Jr. is headed to Tennessee on a 4-year, $82M deal with $50M guaranteed. Moore played the first four seasons of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Getty Images Robert Spillane was never more than a part-time starter in stints with the Tennessee Titans (2018) and the Pittsburgh Steelers (2019-2022), but he emerged as an impact player after signing with the Raiders in 2023. He played all 17 games in both 2023 and 2024, called the plays on the field for defensive coordinator Patrick Graham and became one of the team's primary leaders. Spillane had 148 tackles, seven tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and three interceptions in 2023. He followed that effort up with 158 tackles, 10 TFL, two sacks and two interceptions in 2024. It's a huge loss for the Raiders, and a big gain for the Patriots. The only linebackers the Raiders currently have under contract are Tommy Eichenberg, Amari Gainer and Amari Burney. Divine Deablo, Luke Masterson and Kana'i Mauga are free agents. With Spillane gone, perhaps the Raiders turn to outside free agent options. Per reports, the Jacksonville Jaguars have agreed to a three-year deal with CB Jourdan Lewis, formally of the Dallas Cowboys. Getty Images Former Eagles DL Milton Williams is signing with the Panthers, per source. The Giants are signing former Saints DB Paulson Adebo, per source. NFL free agency began Monday at noon ET with the opening of the legal tampering window, and it didn't take long for agreements to start to be announced. The deals can't become official until 4 p.m. ET Wednesday, the start of the new league year. Here is how Mike Jones grades the deals NFL teams made with the top free agents. GO FURTHER NFL free agency grades 2025: The good, bad and ugly of key deals Getty Images When the Bengals assessed a rebuild of their defensive tackle room, they decided to stick with one of their own rather than invest in the unknown. Hill turns 30 next month, but the Bengals weren't turned off by crossing that age barrier coming off a season where he graded 28th out of 143 qualifying interior defenders. He was second on the team in pressures last season (32) behind Trey Hendrickson. Hill represents one of the better moves by the Bengals front office in recent years when they acquired him from the New York Giants in exchange for center Billy Price. They inked him to a three-year, $30 million deal and now continue to stay in business with him with a slight raise. The free-agent market at defensive tackle wasn't exactly deep, so there was safety in sticking with what they knew. GO FURTHER Cincinnati Bengals 2025 free agency tracker: All eyes on Tee Higgins, Trey Hendrickson The Patriots' first agreement of the negotiating window came as they continue to build up their linebacker group. After signing former Titan Harold Landry on Sunday night, the Patriots came to an agreement with Raiders linebacker Robert Spillane, who was No. 46 in our ranking of the top free agents. Spillane started his NFL career in 2018 playing for the Titans under Mike Vrabel. He was then mostly a downhill run stuffer. But he then went to the Steelers for four years before breaking out with the Raiders the last two seasons, becoming one of the most important members of their defense as he improved in coverage. The terms of the deal are not yet known. Getty Images The Rams are re-signing QB Jimmy Garoppolo to a one-year, $11 million deal, per source. Getty Images Haason Reddick's lone season with the Jets couldn't have gone much worse — and an argument could be made that he enacted the worst contract holdout the NFL has ever seen. He wanted $25 million last offseason when the Eagles let him pursue a trade, went to the Jets without a new deal, did his introductory press conference … and then proceeded to hold out for all of OTAs, mandatory minicamp, training camp and half the regular season. When he returned to the field, he was out of football shape and mostly invisible — finishing with one sack and barely making an impact. Player holdouts like this rarely pan out after the fact, but the Buccaneers are clearly hoping Reddick can get back to being one of the NFL's most productive pass rushers. History says it's more likely he won't much of an impact at all. GO FURTHER Haason Reddick, Buccaneers agree to 1-year, $14M deal: Source Per reports, DT Javon Kinlaw signs a three-year, $45M contract with the Washington Commanders, including $30M guaranteed. The Texans and WR Braxton Berrios have agreed to a one-year, $2 million deal, per source. Berrios could return kicks for Houston as well. Getty Images The Seahawks entered the offseason intent on keeping Metcalf on an extension that would have kept both sides happy, but Metcalf requested a trade last week. The Seahawks want a physical, run-heavy identity on offense, so they must have drawn a line in the sand at the $30 million market rate for premium receivers. Metcalf had a year remaining on his contract, so this was likely when his trade value would be at its highest. The Seahawks will receive the No. 52 pick from Pittsburgh. The Steelers, meanwhile, have had their issues at receiver in recent years. Productive performers like Diontae Johnson and Chase Claypool fizzled out before being shipped away, while veteran acquisitions like Allen Robinson and Mike Williams never took off. Metcalf has racked up at least 900 receiving yards in all six of his NFL seasons, including three topping 1,000 yards. He's averaged eight touchdowns per year. Though not always a high-volume pass catcher — he topped out at 90 receptions in 2022 before grabbing 66 balls each of the past two seasons — Metcalf has the downfield, physical ability to mesh well with Pittsburgh's offense, assuming the Steelers figure something out at quarterback. Steelers trade grade: B+ Seahawks trade grade: B GO FURTHER DK Metcalf trade grades: Steelers add game-changing talent; Seahawks' overhaul continues Getty Images By RJ Kraft and Dianna Russini Drew Dalman and the Chicago Bears agreed to terms on a three-year deal worth $42 million, with $28 million of that being guaranteed, according to a league source. Dalman was the top center on the market — the only center to place inside the top 70 of The Athletic's updated list of the top 150 free agents — and ranked 15th on the overall list. A fourth-round pick out of Stanford in the 2021 NFL Draft, Dalman spent the first four years of his career with the Atlanta Falcons. GO FURTHER Bears land Drew Dalman: How the center fits into their overhauled offensive line Imagn Images How Jaylon Moore fits into Kansas City's plans The Chiefs' initial plan for free agency was to try to convince left tackle Ronnie Stanley, the nine-year veteran, to leave the Baltimore Ravens to sign with them to help protect quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Stanley, however, re-signed with the Ravens, forcing the Chiefs to pivot to acquiring Moore, who they see as an underrated and ascending player. At age 27, Moore will become a first-time starter and have the role of protecting the blind side of Mahomes, the league's most talented quarterback. The Chiefs are optimistic that Moore is ready for that responsibility after being a four-year understudy behind Williams, one of the league's best left tackles. In the past two seasons, Moore has played 279 pass-blocking snaps and has allowed just two sacks. — Nate Taylor, Chiefs beat writer What this means for the 49ers Williams hasn't played a complete season since 2013, which means Moore has gotten plenty of game experience in recent years. The 49ers had been interested in retaining Moore as insurance against the often-injured Williams, but not at the level at which the Chiefs are paying him. The 49ers should be in the market for a good swing tackle behind Williams and right tackle Colton McKivitz. They tendered exclusive rights to free-agent Austen Pleasants, a late-season addition in 2024, and they may bring back Charlie Heck, another late-season addition who is an unrestricted free agent. They also have the No. 11 pick in the draft, which could be used on a tackle like Missouri's Armand Membou or LSU's Will Campbell. — Matt Barrows, 49ers beat writer Chargers are re-signing punter JK Scott, per source. One important note to consider: Bringing Scott back means Chargers keep FG operation intact. Cameron Dicker took over in 2022. And over past three seasons, Chargers have the highest FG percentage in the league. Scott has been the holder for all three of those seasons.

Reviews are not positive for new Commanders DL Javon Kinlaw

You could make a case that the Washington Commanders made the best move on the first day of the NFL's legal tampering period by trading for Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil. You could also make the case that Washington had Monday's most head-scratching move: signing former 49ers and Jets defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw to a three-year, $45 million deal with $30 million guaranteed. Washington just released longtime standout defensive tackle Jonathan Allen in a salary cap move to save $16 million. It's not totally fair to say the Commanders released Allen to sign Kinlaw until you know what Kinlaw's role will be in Joe Whitt's defense. Kinlaw doesn't have a reputation as a big-time run stopper playing defensive tackle. Perhaps Washington plans on playing the 6-foot-5, 319-pound Kinlaw on the edge, giving it a better chance of being more stout against the run next season. Regardless, the deal wasn't well received on the surface by many across the NFL, including some Washington fans. Let's check out some of these reactions. Worst deal of the day BY FAR was the Commanders giving DT Javon Kinlaw $45 million… he's terrible I watched every single snap with the Jets, mind-boggling move — John Frascella (Football) (@NFLFrascella) March 11, 2025 The Commanders after giving all of Jonathan Allen's money to Javon Kinlaw — Wommanders (@Wommandrs) March 10, 2025 Here's Matt Bowen. Smarter than your favorite blogger. — Steve (@AirRaidConcepts) March 10, 2025 It is funny seeing people be happy that they didn't get Javon Kinlaw. His tape is so solid and has been for back to back years. 49ers fans forget he was the best DLine by far in the 2023 playoff run. — John Chapman (@JL_Chapman) March 10, 2025 Interesting Analysis on the Redskins Javon Kinlaw dealI think they had a lot of discussions about how to improve the Run D and create allys for their DBs. And DQ wants to implement what they had early on in Seattle with this concept called an Elephant End. In Seattle it was Red… — Chad Forbes (@NFLDraftBites) March 10, 2025 Cutting Jonathan Allen to save $15.5M and then paying Javon Kinlaw a guaranteed $30M ... is interesting. Adam Peters is a very smart exec. But that's interesting. — Tim Kawakami (@timkawakami) March 10, 2025 One thing I'll say.... Adam Peters doesn't orchestrate his moves at all. No one mentioned Kinlaw or Tunsil all week. It's Fort Knox over there in Ashburn. As it should be. — George Carmi (@Gcarmi21) March 10, 2025 Javon Kinlaw provides some pop within the interior for Washington. Former first-rounder totaled a career high in sacks (5), tackles (34), and run stops (24) last fall & now pairs with Daron Payne & Johnny Newton in DC. — Ryan Fowler (@_RyanFowler_) March 10, 2025 Jets' perspective That Javon Kinlaw contract is one of the worst I've ever seen my time since the Luka trade I refused to believe a piece of sports news was one of the worst contracts in NFL history I'm so serious. — The Jet Press (@TheJetPress) March 10, 2025 Let Peters cook! Traded for Laremy TunsilTraded for Deebo SamuelSigned Javon KinlawRe-signed Bobby WagnerRe-signed Zach ErtzRe-signed TE John BatesAnd the new league year just started! Everyone breathe and LET PETERS COOK! 🧑‍🍳 #RaiseHail — Commander Sean 🪖 (@DMVCommanders) March 10, 2025 30 years of Dan Snyder but your line in the sand is signing Javon Kinlaw in the offseason after an NFCCG appearance? — Mark Phillips (@GoingCommander) March 10, 2025 I guarantee that some of these folks that are criticizing the Kinlaw deal have never seen him play and wouldn't know if he was standing next to you at the at the cooler.😂 — Disco (@discoque90) March 10, 2025 Javon Kinlaw for 45 Million — Dose🦅 (@DailyBirds302) March 10, 2025 As you can see, the reactions are all over the place. Eagles' fans weighing in is funny. Most Washington fans haven't seen Kinlaw play and have tried to keep an open mind instead of outright praising the move. Meanwhile, Philadelphia fans would somehow find a way to say the Laremy Tunsil trade was bad. Kinlaw has a chance to prove Adam Peters right. If not, that honeymoon period will wear off fast for Peters. For now, fans think Peters can do no wrong, but that will chance if Kinlaw flops in 2025. Mixed reactions to the Commanders' first day of free agency

Regardless of what you think of how the Washington Commanders handled the first day of the legal tampering period in NFL free agency, general manager Adam Peters walked away filling one of the franchise's biggest needs. The Commanders shocked the NFL world Monday afternoon, acquiring five-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil and a fourth-round pick in the 2025 NFL draft for third- and seventh-round picks in the upcoming draft and second and fourth-round picks in the 2026 NFL draft. Quarterback Jayden Daniels has a blindside protector who happens to be one of the best in the NFL. Brandon Coleman, Washington's 2024 starter at left tackle, will shift to another position on the offensive line, whether left guard or right tackle. Regardless, one trade helped the Commanders improve two positions, as protecting Daniels is the team's biggest priority. Reactions to the Tunsil trade all favored Washington. Many couldn't believe that the Texans, with a talented young quarterback to protect, would trade a left tackle that was still in the prime of his career. The Commanders have Tunsil on a reasonable contract for a left tackle for two more seasons. It's likely the two sides will engage in extension talks. As for the rest of the day, it was quiet. Washington did make a move shortly after the legal tampering period opened, signing former 49ers first-round Javon Kinlaw. After four years with San Francisco, Kinlaw signed with the New York Jets last offseason. Kinlaw's signing comes one week after the Commanders released longtime defensive tackle Jonathan Allen. The Kinlaw signing wasn't as well-received, and in some cases, it was mocked. Why would Washington pay Kinlaw an average annual contract of $15 million per season and $30 million guaranteed? Kinlaw's stats and the advanced metrics don't point to any one area in which he flourishes. He does have excellent size (6-foot-5, 319), and he's young (27). The Commanders' goals were to improve against the run and beef up the pass rush. Does Kinlaw's signing indicate that Washington will be any better in those two areas? Not necessarily, but it's easy to look at social media and say this will not work. After last season, general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn earned the benefit of the doubt. Now, if Kinlaw doesn't work out, Peters deserves the criticism. But now is not the time. Let it play out. As for not addressing other areas, such as cornerback, safety, wide receiver, and edge rusher, free agency isn't over yet. Yes, some good players are signing elsewhere. And yes, Washington does have plenty of cap space, but Peters clearly didn't see any players on Monday that he felt comfortable paying at the top of the free-agency market. The Commanders will need to be active. They have fewer players signed to the 90-man roster than almost everyone and are currently slated to have only six picks in next month's draft. As for the first day of free agency, fans should be happy that Washington came away with one of the NFL's best offensive tackles and didn't desperately overpay for a free agent. Peters got creative and watched other teams, such as the Kansas City Chiefs, overpay for relatively unproven offensive line help.
