Kinston's Bird Dawgs debut with strong community support

KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) — The Down East Bird Dawgs had their inaugural game Friday, May 9, 2025, and fans were more than excited. 'I think we are going to have a good year and good season and bring it where it's supposed to be, at home Kinston North Carolina,' local Reginald Williams said. As fans filed in Grainger Stadium, they all were ready to watch the Bird Dawgs season get underway, as there was a lot of excitement behind the team. Some even came to celebrate their birthday and have a good time, like Jennie Lynch! 'Just to have fun. To be away from everyday things and just have fun,' Lynch said. Some people came with family! 'We are excited to be here tonight,' Nola Jones said. 'It's their first game with us, this is my Dad, and he wanted to come surprise the boys with the first game of the season.' Other locals have history with Grainger Stadium and are now back to their roots on the Bird Dawgs. 'I always pull for the home team. I went to high school at Grainger and graduated from this stadium,' Local fan Bill Hood said. 'When I was a child, my father ran concession here when they were the Kinston Eagles, so I have spent many a night at this stadium— Anything that brings in people from out and around the area is always good for the city.' Inaugural game, season just ahead for Down East Bird Dawgs

KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) — It's just a few days until the inaugural game for the Down East Bird Dawgs at Grainger Stadium in Kinston. Baseball is back in the town after the Down East Wood Ducks left at the end of last season. It's a place rich in baseball history. 'Oh, man, there's so much history here,' Director of Broadcasting & Media Relations Spencer Pattison said. 'I mean, just looking back at the teams that have played here, the players that have come through here, there's just so much history.' When the news came that the Wood Ducks would be leaving and moving to Spartanburg, S.C., many people in the area had serious doubts about the future of the sport in the city. 'I think the community here around Kinston was kind of scared and upset when the Wood Ducks packed up and left town,' Director of Marketing, Promotions & Fan Experience Kris Dumschat said. 'I think that a lot of people thought, is there going to be baseball still around?' The announcement soon followed that the Bird Dawgs would be coming to town as an expansion team in the Frontier League, a partner league of the MLB. 'It's been chaos, but it's also been really exciting because everything we've been working toward since we launched the team in October is finally coming,' Dumschat said. 'There's a lot that we have done to not only enhance the stadium, but also keep the historic feel to it as we don't want to lose those kind of traditional values. The towns that have had baseball for a while, that's where it's meant to be and I think this town embodies that.' The Bird Dawgs are hoping to embrace the past with an eye on the future. 'And I think what's really great is that we are locally owned now. So, as long as fans continue to come out and support this team, this team is going to be here to stay,' Dumschat said. 'Because when the community invests in it, just like the community of owners invested into this, the team is going to be here to stay and we're going to be able to have a lot of fun and do a lot of great things for the community.' Lenoir County Public Schools celebrates Teacher Appreciation Week

KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) — With May 5-9, 2025, being Teacher Appreciation Week, Lenoir County Public Schools is celebrating its teachers this week. At Northeast Elementary School, Principal of the Year Rashard Curmon, is making sure every public educator knows how much of an impact they make. 'This is a celebration not just of teachers, but all staff members from our cafeteria to our custodial staff to our bus drivers to our front office,' Curmon said. 'This is a celebration of all their hard work and dedication. They are the difference makers and what they do is magical and it's the work of magic and miracle each and every day.' The newly-announced Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Erin Greene at Northwest Elementary, said that being a teacher is not just her job, but who she is. 'Last school year was one of the hardest school years ever. I ended up losing my mom in February and I really relied on my students and the school to get me through some of the toughest and darkest days that I had last year,' Greene said. 'And it made me realize when I'm one teacher of the year, that sometimes if I just tell my kids and show my kids that I love them, that that's enough.' Greene, who was a student at Northwest herself, said it's all about giving back. 'You know, like when you're in elementary school and you have all this, like, nostalgia, like warm, fuzzy feelings inside. I get to work with the people who gave me those warm fuzzies and then I get to give my kids those warm fuzzies,' Greene said. 'Like the field day that we have here now is just like how it was 20 years ago. It's just coming full circle and you know that you're supported here because they have supported you since you were eight years old.' Teacher Appreciation Week is an ode to the legacies each teacher will leave behind. 'As a public educator, the legacy would be to leave it in school better than I found it and to see a staff and children grow into whatever they desire to be.' Curmon said.
