Munster's Kleyn ruled out of Springbok squad due to injury

MUNSTER LOCK JEAN Kleyn has been ruled out of South Africa's three Tests in July after picking up an injury during the weekend win over the Barbarians, the Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus announced on Sunday. Kleyn started Saturday's non-cap match alongside Lood de Jager in Cape Town, which the Boks won 54-7, but an unspecified injury has ruled him out of the squad that will take on Italy over the next two weekends and then Georgia. Advertisement South Africa Rugby said in a press statement that Kleyn would return to Munster to undergo the necessary rehabilitation. 'We feel for Jean but injuries are part of the game,' said Erasmus. 'We are fortunate to have good depth at lock within the squad so there is no need for us to replace him at this stage.' The Springboks face Italy in Pretoria next Saturday with the second Test in Gqeberha a week later. They then take on Georgia in Nelspruit on 19 July before heading into the Rugby Championship in August. – © AFP 2025

Springboks suffer injury blow on eve of Test season

The Springboks will kick off their Test season with their opening clash against Italy this Saturday, but unfortunately lock Jean Kleyn has been ruled out of the squad travelling to Johannesburg after sustaining an injury during the team's 54-7 victory against the Barbarians on Saturday. Kleyn, who started the match with lock partner Lood de Jager, will return to Irish club Munster to recover from the injury and undergo the necessary rehabilitation. The nature of the injury has not been specified, but the fact that Kleyn has been released from the squad and sent back to Ireland does suggest he is set for a lengthy period on the sidelines. 'We feel for Jean,' said Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus, 'but injuries are part of the game, and we are fortunate to have good depth at lock within the squad, so there is no need for us to replace him at this stage.' The Springboks made the journey from Cape Town to Johannesburg on Sunday to begin their preparations for the opening match of the Incoming Series against Italy at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday, 5 July. They will line up against Italy again a week later at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium in Gqeberha before taking on Georgia at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit in the closing match of the series on Saturday 19 July. The team had Sunday off to travel and recover from Saturday's encounter and will begin their on-field preparations for the first official Test match of the season on Monday. WA Avocado Export Regional Forum is coming to the South West this month with a host of industry experts in tow

Get the toast out, because a whole heap of avocado experts are coming to Manjimup. The WA Avocado Export Regional Forum is coming to the South West this month with a host of industry experts in tow across three avocado-themed events. The free events are being delivered by Avocados Australia as part of the Hort Innovation-funded project Avocado Market Access and Trade Development aiming to bolster WA's impressive commitment to the super fruit. In 2023-24 Australian avocado growers produced 150,913 tonnes of avocados supplying all year round with WA's growers producing 44 per cent of the total. The events will kick off with the WA Grower Regional Forum on June 18 from 8am to 4pm at the Macedonian Community of Manjimup Hall. The next day the WA Pre-forum Avo Chat breakfast will kick off at 7.30am to 8.45am at the Kingsley Motel Hotel before wrapping up with the WA Export Regional Forum from 9am to 1.20pm in the same venue. Avocados Australia chair Matt Kleyn will be present at each event and said he was keen to meet growers. At the WA Pre-forum Avo Chat, Mr Kleyn will be joined by Avocados Australia's WA director Duncan Wells. Avocados Australia CEO John Tyas will be attending all three events and encouraged WA growers who have any questions or issues to raise them at the WA Pre-forum Avo Chat breakfast. 'Events like these provide growers with the chance to fact find and source the best information to help them improve their businesses,' he said. URC quarter-final pits Eben Etzebeth against Jean Kleyn

The two tighthead locks have rarely faced each other on the field. Springbok locks Eben Etzebeth and Jean Kleyn after winning the 2023 Rugby World Cup final against New Zealand. Picture:Springbok tighthead locks Eben Etzebeth and Jean Kleyn will do battle when their respective sides, the Sharks and Munster, play in the quarter-finals of the United Rugby Championship. The teams clash at Kings Park Stadium next Saturday, with the victor to face either the Bulls or Edinburgh, who play earlier in the day. By the numbers Etzebeth, who captains the Sharks, is the more accomplished Springbok – twice SA Rugby's men's player of the year and once a nominee for World Rugby's men's player of the year, to go with his 131 Test caps (the most by any South African). Kleyn has enjoyed fewer accolades, with just seven caps for the Springboks and five for Ireland, and no points scored for either country. He's also won one World Cup compared to Etzebeth's two. However, Kleyn was Munster's men's player of the year in 2023 and was in the URC's dream team for the 2021/22 season. He's amassed 150 caps for the top Irish side, reaching the milestone against Benetton last weekend. He helped them win the URC trophy in 2023 to add to his 2014 Currie Cup title with Western Province. Both 2.03m and not much difference in weight, it could be said Kleyn, 31, is only marginally less devastating on the field (or in the air during lineouts) than Etzebeth, 33. When in form, Kleyn easily walks into the Springbok squad, and even did so ahead of Etzebeth in 2024's end-of-year tour against Wales, though it came at a time when Bok boss Rassie Erasmus was focussing on rotation and building squad depth. Both players featured at March's Springbok alignment camp and will do so again this week. Kleyn calls Etzebeth 'the most dominant' in position The two played when the Sharks hosted Munster in the URC league phase in October last year, though fellow Springbok Jordan Hendrikse made the headlines with his 16 individual points, and others drew attention with 10 tries scored on the day (final score 41–24 to the Sharks). When Etzebeth was in the running for his World Rugby award, Kleyn described him as 'by far the most dominant tighthead lock to have probably played the game in the last 10 or 15 years'. Kleyn told media Etzebeth's performances speak for themselves and hoped either he or fellow Springbok nominees Cheslin Kolbe or Pieter-Steph du Toit would win the award. In the end, Du Toit did.
