Broncos free agency updates going into Day 1

Broncos free agency updates going into Day 1 The NFL's free agency negotiating window opens today and the Denver Broncos have already been active. Teams cannot begin negotiating with pending free agents from other clubs until 10 a.m. MT, but they are allowed to give extensions to in-house free agents before then. The Broncos did just that with a trio of players on Sunday night. Denver gave three-year contracts to defensive lineman D.J. Jones and long snapper Mitchell Fraboni and a two-year deal to backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham. More moves are on the way. The Broncos missed out on two notable linebackers on Sunday when Nick Bolton and Jamien Sherwood re-signed with the Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets, respectively. Denver apparently had more interest in Sherwood than Bolton, according to KUSA-TV's Mike Klis. Two notable ILBs still available are Robert Spillane and Dre Greenlaw, and Klis believes the team will have more interest in Spillane due to Greenlaw's injury history. Meanwhile, Klis notes the Broncos are also expected to add a tight end tight end (Juwan Johnson is a name to watch) and a safety (here's a list of candidates). Before the three in-house deals, Denver had about $40.5 million in available salary cap space. Stay tuned. We will track all of the team's upcoming moves on Broncos Wire. Broncos fire assistant coach Michael Wilhoite after his arrest last week

The Broncos fired linebackers coach Michael Wilhoite on Wednesday, 10 days after his arrest on suspicion of second degree assault of a police officer. 'After thorough discussions as an organization, I met with Michael Wilhoite and informed him we have decided to part ways,' Broncos coach Sean Payton said in a statement to Mike Klis of 9News. 'We recognize the serious nature of the allegations against him and believe this is the best course of action at this time. 'I appreciate Michael's contributions to the Broncos and am confident he will move forward in a positive direction.' Wilhoite, 38, faces three charges — second-degree assault on a police officer, obstruction of a peace officer and criminal mischief — from the incident at the Denver airport, per Klis. Wilhoite left his car unattended in the arrivals area, and when he returned, a police officer told him he couldn't leave his vehicle in that spot, according to court records obtained by Klis. Wilhoite told the officer to 'shut the [expletive] up.' The officer repeated his command, and Wilhoite repeated his expletive before chest-bumping the officer. The officer shoved Wilhoite, and Wilhoite then punched the officer, according to the statement obtained by Klis. The officer had injuries to both knees, pain in his jaw and may have damaged his left wrist. The officer fired his Taser at Wilhoite, who is accused of driving off before his arrest a short time later. Wilhoite joined the team's staff as outside linebackers coach in 2023.

Broncos QB Bo Nix declines Pro Bowl nod due to minor procedure

When Drake Maye and Russell Wilson were added to the AFC's Pro Bowl roster on Tuesday as replacements, Denver Broncos fans quickly wondered why quarterback Bo Nix didn't get in above them. It turns out Nix was invited to the Pro Bowl as a fourth alternate in the AFC, but he turned down the offer due to a minor procedure, according to KUSA-TV's Mike Klis. The Klis story says it was a 'routine and minor, cleanup procedure,' but his source did not reveal which part of Nix's body received the treatment. Nix did play through three transverse process fractures last season, but Klis reports that the pre-planned procedure was not related to the back injury. Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert and C.J. Stroud were all unavailable or opted out of the Pro Bowl, so Nix was next in line. After Nix opted out, Joe Burrow is now the AFC's top QB left with Wilson and Maye added to the squad behind him. Nix is the second Bronco to decline an alternate nod, joining guard Quinn Meinerz. After being invited as a first alternate, Meinerz turned it down because he did not want to participate as a replacement lineman. The AFC squad will be coached by Peyton Manning in skills competitions on Jan. 30 (ESPN) and a flag football game on Feb. 2 (ESPN/ABC).
