Watch: Winter tips to keep specially-abled pets safe and warm
THE National Specially-abled Pets Day was celebrated recently with the aim to shine a spotlight on the needs of pets with disabilities.
This day is set aside to educate the public about caring for disabled pets.
Specially-abled pets are animals which have physical disabilities, injuries, or chronic health conditions that require additional care and attention.
Despite their unique challenges, Lauren Paxton, a vet nurse and a certified canine rehabilitation practitioner at Medivet Hillcrest, said these pets can still lead fulfilling lives in loving homes.

Paxton works a lot with animals which have had surgery and suffer with osteoarthritis.
She said winter is a challenging time for animals with osteoarthritis or any joint issues.
'The cold weather makes the joints feel stiffer and makes it more difficult for these pets to move about.' Paxton advises how people can make them more comfortable.
Tips for Caring for Specially-Abled Pets:
– Warm Environment: Keep them in a warm room, especially during winter, to reduce stiffness and discomfort.
– Comfortable Bedding: Provide firm bedding to make it easier for them to get up and down.
– Non-slip Surfaces: Use non-slip matting or carpeting to prevent slipping and falling.
– Assistive Devices: Offer stools or lower surfaces to help them climb onto furniture.
– Safety Precautions: Place water bowls on non-slip surfaces, keep nails short, limit access to stairs, and prevent over-exertion.
– Weight Management: Maintain a healthy weight to reduce the risk of developing arthritis or exacerbating existing conditions.
Consulting a Veterinarian:
– Dietary Advice: Speak to a vet about a suitable diet to ensure the pet's nutritional needs are met.
– Personalised Care: Work with a vet to develop a care plan tailored to the pet's specific needs and abilities.
