What changes are coming to the Kansas Avenue Bridge in 2026?

Context: The above video initially aired on April 30, 2025. TOPEKA (KSNT) – Transportation officials are gearing up to make some improvements to a major bridge in Topeka next year along with some permanent changes to it as part of a larger project. 27 News reached out to the City of Topeka this week for details on what will happen to the Kansas Avenue Bridge in 2026. Workers are currently planning to make some big changes to it as part of the $239 million Polk-Quincy Viaduct (PQV) project that is set to last into 2027. Many local drivers now rely on the Kansas Avenue Bridge for their daily commutes after the Topeka Boulevard Bridge closed earlier this year. However, areas around the bridge will be impacted by the PQV project next year with the complete closure of I-70 as KDOT rebuilds the viaduct. Topeka ice hockey team name chosen Amanda Knowland with the City of Topeka said the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) will close Kansas Avenue from First Street to Third Street during the second phase of the PQV project. The second phase will begin once work wraps up on this year's projects in December at which point the Topeka Boulevard Bridge will be reopened to traffic. Knowland said work crews will reconstruct pavement from the north side of First Street and Kansas Avenue to the Kansas Avenue bridge abutment. Workers will also replace the bridge expansion joint at the Curtis Flyoff. Locals will also find the bridge will have some other changes made to it in the years ahead. By the end of the project on Kansas Avenue's bridge, part of it will no longer be available to traffic. 'Conversion of the outside southbound lane of the Kansas Ave. Bridge to southbound and northbound pedestrian/bicycle-only use is part of the larger PQV project,' Knowland said. 'This conversion process is expected to occur during a later portion of phase 2.' Knowland said the Branner Bridge in the Oakland/east Topeka area will be shut down for the replacement of expansion joints and pavement from Southeast Third Street to a short distance north of Northeast Atchison Avenue. City workers will also begin a rehabilitation project on Southeast Sixth Street from Golden Avenue to Rice Road in 2025-2026. Knowland said work is also planned for Sixth Street between Rice Road and Deer Creek in 2025 along with from Deer Creek to Golden Avenue in 2026. She said Southeast Sixth Street will stay open to traffic during this project. Dillons offers 5% off discount at Kansas stores on Wednesday For more Polk-Quincy Viaduct construction news, click here.
