Tennessee football's ties to Boston's Big Three in MLB Boston's prospects, right fielder Roman Anthony, second baseman Kristian Campbell and third baseman Marcelo Mayer, are now all playing for the Red Sox in Major League Baseball. The trio is known as Boston's Big Three and their combined age is 65 (Anthony 21, Campbell 22, Mayer 22). The Red Sox selected Mayer in the first round (No. 4 overall) of the 2021 MLB draft from East Lake High School in Chula Vista, California. Anthony was selected by Boston in the 2022 MLB draft second round (No. 79 overall) from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Campbell was drafted by the Red Sox during the fourth round (No. 132 overall) in 2023 from Georgia Tech. The trio of prospects all made their MLB debuts in 2025 for Boston: Campbell on March 27, Mayer on May 24 and Anthony on Monday. He played college baseball at Georgia Tech from 2022-23. Tennessee hosted the Yellow Jackets during the 2022 NCAA Tournament Knoxville Regional final. The Vols defeated Georgia Tech, 9-6, on June 5, 2022. Campbell did not play against Tennessee during his redshirt season as a freshman. The 6-foot-3, 191-pound infielder is the son of former Tennessee running back Kenneth Campbell. Kenneth Campbell played for the Vols from 1989-92. In 22 games at Tennessee, he totaled 141 rushing yards and scored one touchdown on 41 attempts, while recording three receptions for 13 yards. The Vols won the 1990 SEC championship and defeated Virginia, 23-22, in the 1991 Sugar Bowl under head coach Johnny Majors. Tennessee also won the 1989 SEC championship. Lady Vols defeat Ohio State softball in Knoxville Regional No. 1 seed Tennessee (42-14) won its second game in the 2025 NCAA Tournament Knoxville Regional. The Lady Vols defeated No. 2 seed Ohio State (44-13-1), 4-2, Saturday at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium. Junior right-handed pitcher Karlyn Pickens (22-8) made her second start for the Lady Vols in the Knoxville Regional. She pitched seven innings and recorded ten strikeouts against the Buckeyes. Pickens allowed five hits, two runs (one earned) and two walks, while totaling 105 pitches (75 strikes) against 27 batters. Against Miami University on Friday, Pickens pitched three innings and recorded six strikeouts. She totaled 48 pitches, including 28 strikes, against 11 batters. Tennessee's offense produced nine hits against Ohio State. Gabby Leach, Laura Mealer, Sophia Nugent and Taylor Pannell had one RBI each for the Lady Vols. Kinsey Fiedler hit the Lady Vols' only double in the contest. Tennessee leads the all time softball series against Ohio State, 6-0, dating to Feb. 27, 2010.
