I was prepared at first, but then I burst into tears and refused to do the scene because I was only 15–16 years old at that time. After many persuasions in the makeup room, I went on the set and did that scene. I gathered courage from the girls I had seen in the red-light area a few years ago.' When Sonam Decided To Leave World of Glitz and Glamour Sonam married Rajiv Rai, who is the son of prominent film producer Gulshan Rai, in 1991 and decided to leave the country, which ended her performing career. She chose to leave the film profession in just seven years when she was at the height of her fame, after marrying Rajiv. Shortly after her marriage, rumours spread about her alleged relationship with mafia don Abu Salem, but it was never confirmed whether the two had a link between them or not.
