Kolkata Metro: Powering a greener tomorrow
Kolkata's Metro Railway, often called the city's Lifeline, is making significant strides towards sustainability. For over 40 years, it has not only connected the city but is now playing a crucial role in reducing carbon footprints by harnessing renewable energy. This initiative has gained momentum, especially with the government's PM Surya Ghar Scheme and the Indian Railways' ambitious target to become a Net Zero Carbon Emitter by 2030. Currently, Metro Railway boasts a total solar power capacity of 4.556 MWp across various service buildings and carsheds. In April 2025 alone, the Metro Railway generated an impressive 47.21 thousand units of electricity from solar power. This solar power generation system is efficiently monitored through a cloud-based system. Presently, the Metro Railway produces an annual average of 57 lakh units of solar energy, leading to a significant reduction of 49 lakh tons of carbon footprints each year. The upcoming projects alone are expected to generate 14500 KWp of electricity to meet their demand. Currently, the Metro Railway generates an average of 16,000 units of solar power daily. Once all these new solar power plants are installed, this daily generation capacity is projected to surge to an astounding 110,000 units. Kolkata Metro is clearly committed to achieving its milestone for reducing carbon emissions, paving the way for a cleaner, better tomorrow.

Kolkata metro to introduce a fine of INR 250 for crossing safety line from June 1
Now you'll have to pay a penalty of INR 250 if you cross the yellow safety line at any of Kolkata's metro stations. Yes, you read that right! From 1 June 2025, Kolkata Metro will implement a fine for passengers who cross the yellow safety line as a part of a broader initiative to enhance commuter safety. This will also instill discipline among passengers. The yellow line serves as a clear demarcation on platforms, indicating the safe distance passengers should maintain while waiting for trains. However, despite frequent public announcements and warnings, many commuters continue to ignore this guideline, stepping dangerously close to the tracks. Concerned by this ongoing unsafe behaviour, metro authorities have decided to adopt a stricter approach. Under the new rule, crossing the yellow line will be considered an act of 'creating nuisance' within metro premises. Officials will begin conducting special enforcement drives from June 1 to monitor compliance and fine violators. This move is expected to reduce the risk of accidents and service disruptions caused by reckless behaviour. Reactions to the fine have been mixed. While some commuters welcome the measure as a necessary step towards ensuring safety, others view the ₹250 penalty as excessive. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Добро пожаловать в Аравию SAUDI Забронировать Undo Nevertheless, metro authorities have launched a comprehensive public awareness campaign to educate passengers about the importance of the rule. As part of this campaign, additional announcements are being made across all stations, reminding passengers to stay behind the yellow line. Posters and digital signs have been placed in prominent locations to reinforce the message. Metro staff have also been directed to engage directly with commuters, explaining the safety risks and the reasons behind the fine. The fine signals Kolkata Metro's firm commitment to passenger safety and operational efficiency. By holding individuals accountable for their actions, the metro aims to create a more secure and orderly environment for all. Encouraging commuters to take personal responsibility for safety will not only minimize accidents but also contribute to smoother train operations. With the enforcement date approaching, Kolkata Metro hopes that increased awareness and strict penalties will lead to long-term behavioural change. Passengers are urged to adhere to the guidelines to avoid fines and help ensure a safer, more reliable commuting experience for everyone.
