Supreme Court grants bail to Telugu journalist in offensive remarks on women case
The Supreme Court on Friday granted bail to Telugu journalist Kommineni Srinivasa Rao, who was arrested by the Andhra Pradesh Police over alleged derogatory remarks about women from the Amaravati region. The comments were made earlier this month during his debate show on Sakshi TV, a regional news channel owned by YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) chief Jagan Mohan Court passed the order in response to a plea filed by Rao challenging his arrest. A partial working day bench comprising Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Manmohan directed that the 70-year-old journalist, who was taken into custody on June 9, be released. The Court noted that it was not Rao but one of the panellists on the programme who had made the controversial petitioner himself did not make the statement on the live TV show and his journalistic rights need to be protected so that his freedom of speech is also protected. We direct that the petitioner be released in the FIR subject to conditions imposed by the trial court,' the bench said. The bench further instructed Rao not to make any derogatory statements on his show or permit any guest to do so in future broadcasts. Questioning the actions of the Andhra Pradesh government, the bench stressed the need to uphold the journalistic rights of Rao and protect his fundamental right to freedom of remarks, broadcast live on Sakshi TV on June 6, were reportedly made by journalist VV Krishnam Raju, who allegedly referred to the Amaravati region as a 'capital of prostitutes'. The Andhra Pradesh Police registered a case against Raju and Rao on June 9 under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Information Technology Act, and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) was remanded to 14 days' judicial custody by a local court in Andhra Pradesh on June 10. The arrest comes based on a recent episode of the 'KSR Live Show' aired on Sakshi TV, during which journalist VVR Krishnamraju made derogatory remarks, stating, 'Amaravati is not a capital of goddesses, but a capital of prostitutes." Kommineni, who hosted the show, is accused of not denouncing his remarks and allegedly encouraging and furthering them during the broadcast. Police also said they are searching for Krishnam Raju, who has gone missing from his home in Vijayawada. People from different areas had filed several complaints with the police about the TV debate on Sakshi TV, where it was claimed that insulting remarks were made about women from the Amaravati region. Guntur: Police arrested senior journalist Kommineni Srinivasa Rao at his residence at Journalist Colony in Hyderabad n Monday for his alleged derogatory remarks against the women of Amaravati region during a Telugu TV channel debate. Based on the complaints lodged by local women, Thullur police registered the cases against Kommineni Srinivasa Rao and journalist VVR Krishnam Raju. Police officials team is shifting Kommineni from Hyderabad city to Thullur police station for further action. They will produce him in the court in Guntur district. The police also went to VVR Krishnam Raju's residence in Vijayawada city, but they fund the house locked. Police booked cases under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities)Act and other relevant sections of the IPC against them. AP Madiga Corporation director Khambampati Sirisha also lodged a complaint against the two journalists. Several Amaravati-based women, farmers and members of various JACs, condemned the alleged remarks made by Kommineni Srinivasa Rao and VVR Krishnam Raju against the women of Amaravati region. Deputy Speaker in the State Legislative Assembly Raghurama Krishnam Raju complained to the Director General of Police Harish Kumar Gupta on the derogatory remarks made by Kommineni Srinivasa Rao and VVR Krishnam Raju and demanded action against them. Cases have been booked at 52 police stations against them across the State, it is learnt.

Senior journalist arrested over controversial debate
The Andhra Pradesh police on Monday (June 9, 2025) arrested Kommineni Srinivasa Rao, a senior journalist working with Sakshi TV, at his residence in Hyderabad and brought him to Guntur. The arrest was made based on a police complaint lodged by Kambampati Sireesha, a leader of Amaravati Capital Farmers' Dalit JAC and a resident of Rayapudi in Thullur mandal. 'During a live talk show with KSR programme in Sakshi TV, journalist V.V.R. Krishnam Raju and Kommineni Srinivasa Rao made obscene and malicious comments that Amaravati is not the capital of gods but of prostitutes and that only AIDS patients live there. These remarks, apparently made with the encouragement of the Sakshi management, have deeply hurt the self-respect of the women of Amaravati, particularly Dalit women,' Ms. Sireesha alleged in her complaint. The police mentioned in the FIR that, 'This is a case of insulting the modesty of women, promoting and creating enmity between different groups, with deliberate and malicious intention of outraging the religious feelings of citizens of India and defaming the women with criminal conspiracy. It promotes the feelings of enmity against members of the SCs or STs by transmitting through Sakshi TV channel that occurred on June 6, 2025.' Cases have been registered against the accused including Mr. Krishnam Raju, Mr. Srinivasa Rao and Sakshi TV management under Section 3(1)(u) of SC and ST Prevention of Atrocities Act (POA) Act, 1989, Section 67 of IT Act-2000-2008, Section 79 (Word, gesture or an act intended to outrage the modesty of women), Section 196 (Promoting enmity between different groups) and other charges including 353(2), 299, 356(2), 61(1) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). While Mr. Srinivasa Rao was arrested, the police are still on the hunt for Mr. Krishnam Raju, who is absconding. The police refused to divulge more details in view of security reasons.
