Four boundary-pushing young artists nominated for Korea Artist Prize 2025

Selected artist's new works will be shown starting in August The annual Korea Artist Prize 2025 will introduce young Korean artists who push the boundaries of medium and discourse. The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea announced the four finalists for the Korea Artist Prize 2025, whose new works will be on view from August to February 2026. The winner will be announced in January after evaluations by the judging committee and public discussions with the artists. Artist Kim Young-eun, who focuses on sound and listening in a historical context and human narratives, will create a new work that explores ways of listening in a community of migrants and diaspora. Painter Kim Ji-pyeong is an artist who overturns the ideas found in traditional Eastern paintings, critically interpreting gender issues and the division of the Korean Peninsula. The artist collective Unmake Lab, formed in 2016 by Choi Bin-na and Song Soo-yon, has focused on combining Korea's history of industrial development with artificial intelligence elements such as datasets and computer vision. Meanwhile, interdisciplinary artist Im Young-joo examines the processes by which superstitions, beliefs and religious faiths are accepted and shaped in Korean society through video, installations, performance and virtual reality. 'By selecting important Korean artists each year since 2012 and sharing their bodies of work with a wide audience through the support of the SBS Foundation, the MMCA has been broadening the base for Korean art,' said Kim Sung-hee, director of MMCA. The Korea Artist Prize 2024 was awarded to kinetic sculpture artist Yang Jung-uk in recognition of his creative approach to the medium and the humanistic stories depicted in his work.
