Police: Kelantan's crime index up by 15.1pc in 2024, notable increases in rapes and theft

KOTA BARU, June 4 — Kelantan recorded a 15.1 per cent rise in its crime index in 2024, driven mainly by increases in violent and property-related offences, according to state police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat. He stated that a total of 2,296 cases were reported between January and December last year, up from 1,994 cases in 2023, representing an increase of 302 cases. Violent crime rose by 8.5 per cent from 390 to 423 cases, while property crime climbed 16.7 per cent from 1,604 to 1,872 cases, he added. 'Among the most concerning trends is the spike in rape cases, which rose 20.7 per cent, from 130 in 2023 to 157 cases last year,' said Mohd Yusoff during the 2025 Kelantan Police Chief Town Hall Discussion, themed 'Youth Awareness: Preventing Social Ills, Shaping the Future', held at Universiti Malaysia Kelantan. Armed robbery without firearms also increased by 25.6 per cent from 43 to 54 cases, while assault cases saw a more modest rise of 6.8 per cent from 147 to 157 cases. At the same time, several violent crimes recorded significant drops. Murder cases fell by 55.6 per cent from nine to four, and armed robbery involving firearms dropped 60 per cent from five to two instances. In the property crime category, theft remained the most significant contributor with 732 cases in 2024, up 50.9 per cent from 485 cases the previous year. House break-ins also rose sharply by 41.7 per cent with 628 cases, while car thefts increased by 23.3 per cent from nine to 12. However, motorcycle thefts declined significantly by 46.9 per cent from 128 cases in 2023 to 68 last year. — Bernama

Perikatan rubbishes claim 10 of its MPs switching sides, calls for proof amid defection rumours

KOTA BARU, June 1 – Perikatan Nasional (PN) has challenged those claiming that 10 of its MPs have pledged support for the government to provide evidence. Utusan Malaysia cited its chief whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan saying such allegations were no longer surprising amid the current political atmosphere. 'Why only 10 MPs, when we have 74 seats in Parliament? So, when we hear stories like this, it's not surprising anymore in today's political landscape. 'Some even say 11 government bloc MPs are planning to cross over — who knows?' he asked. PN currently has 68 seats in the Dewan Rakyat — 43 from PAS and 25 from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia. The Malaysian United Democratic Union (Muda) has also joined it in the Opposition bloc. Takiyuddin, who is also PAS secretary-general, reiterated that PN remains confident in the loyalty of its MPs and believes none intend to defect. Reports had earlier surfaced citing unnamed opposition sources alleging that 10 PN MPs had signed a pledge backing the leadership of the Unity Government. The unnamed sources claimed the move was intended to 'safeguard national political stability' and to 'reject efforts to undermine the people's mandate through continued perception warfare.'

Thanks, but no thanks: Takiyuddin says Perikatan not interested in chasing Rafizi, Nik Nazmi or Tengku Zafrul

KOTA BARU, June 1 — Perikatan Nasional (PN) reportedly has no intention of inviting neither former PKR leaders Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, nor ex-Umno member Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, to join the coalition. Utusan Malaysia cited its chief whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan saying that while the Oppositing coalition is open to cooperation in Parliament, it is not actively seeking their membership. 'If they want to join PN, that's up to them,' he was quoted saying here. 'However, Rafizi and Nik Nazmi would be subject to the issue of party-hopping.' Takiyuddin also criticised Tengku Zafrul's decision to leave Umno and align himself with PKR, calling the move 'unprincipled'. Rafizi and Nik Nazmi recently stepped down from their ministerial posts following defeats in the recent PKR party elections. They are currently on gardening leave. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has said that no Cabinet reshuffle will happen while they are away. Meanwhile, Umno Supreme Council member Tengku Zafrul announced that he is leaving the party to join PKR. The investment, trade and industry minister is also vacating his seat on the Umno Supreme Council as well as his position as its Kota Raja division chief. All three of them have never declared their intention to join PN.

Kelantan teen charged with raping underage girl in school storeroom

KOTA BARU, May 27 — An 18-year-old youth was reportedly charged in the Sessions Court here today with raping an underage schoolgirl in a storage room at a Kuala Krai school last year. According to a report in Berita Harian, he was charged before Judge Zulkifli Abllah under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code, which provides for a prison sentence of up to 20 years and whipping upon conviction. The accused is alleged to have raped a 15-year-old girl, at around 3pm in April last year. He reportedly pleaded not guilty to the charge, with lawyer Wan Norfarhan Liyana Wan Baharuddin representing him. Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Faiz Fitri Mohamad was said to have requested bail be set at RM15,000. However, Wan Norfarhan reportedly appealed for a lower amount not exceeding RM3,000, citing her client's recent offer to enrol in a matriculation programme starting June 23, which requires financial preparation. 'At the time of the incident, he was 17. He is now 18. His parents work as a factory worker and a labourer, and they cannot afford a high bail amount,' she was quoted as saying. The court reportedly set bail at RM5,000 and fixed June 26 for document submission and the next case mention.

Bachok acid attack survivor on slow mend after three surgeries, trauma still haunts her, says husband

KOTA BARU, May 26 — The condition of the victim who sustained injuries after being splashed with a liquid believed to be acid on May 17, is improving after undergoing three surgeries. Her husband, Muhammad Syahrul Ikhwan Seri Buana, 33, said he is not certain how many more surgeries his wife, Nor Faziera Muda, 27, will need, as it depends on her skin condition. 'We are leaving it to the expertise of the doctors treating her and hope she will recover fully as soon as possible. 'What I'm most concerned about now is the trauma she's experiencing, as the incident might still be haunting her. Especially since we don't know who had the heart to commit such a cruel act,' he said when contacted by Bernama today. When asked about the two arrested suspects linked to the case and one still at large, Muhammad Syahrul said he does not want to make assumptions, so as not to disrupt the police investigation. 'I am leaving everything to the police to investigate and apprehend those involved. Such a cruel and inhumane act must be met with a fitting punishment,' he said. On May 17, Nor Faziera, a spa owner, was splashed with a liquid believed to be acid by an unknown individual near a convenience store in Beris Kubur Besar, Tawang, Bachok. The victim who suffered severe burns to her shoulder, back, arms, and legs is currently receiving treatment at the Burn Treatment Unit Ward, Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital, Kubang Kerian. — Bernama
