Seth Jones Finds Himself In Stanley Cup Final Following Trade From Blackhawks
Former Canadiens Player Might Have Played His Last Game With The Hurricanes Since the Carolina Hurricanes signed Montreal Canadiens former player Jesperi Kotkaniemi for a $6.1 million offer sheet in the Summer of 2021, plenty has been written about the centerman, but it has rarely been positive. Earlier in the Eastern Conference final, the soon-to-be 25-year-old was scratched for a couple of games.

Jaccob Slavin scores in OT as the Hurricanes beat the Capitals in Game 1 of their 2nd-round series
Updated [hour]:[minute] [AMPM] [timezone], [monthFull] [day], [year] WASHINGTON (AP) — Jaccob Slavin scored in overtime, Frederik Andersen made 13 saves in his return from injury and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Washington Capitals 2-1 in Game 1 of their second-round playoff series on Tuesday night. Logan Stankoven started the comeback with his goal midway through the third period off a turnover, beating Logan Thompson after Aliaksei Protas' errant pass off Washington teammate Alex Alexeyev's right skate put the puck on Jesperi Kotkaniemi's stick. After failing to score on a power play late in regulation, Slavin scored 3:06 into OT from just inside the blue line to give Carolina the series lead. Andersen allowed only an early second-period goal to Protas in improving to 4-1 this postseason. Andersen was back after getting knocked out of Game 4 and missing Game 5 of the first round against New Jersey with an apparent head injury. The opener showed just how evenly matched these rivals are — and how differently they like to play with the puck. The high-shot-volume Canes got 33 on net to the more selective Caps' 14 and spent far more time in the offensive zone, while pressuring and defending with the same style that has made each successful. Carolina remains the only team perfect on the penalty kill this postseason, keeping Washington's power play off the board twice to improve to 17 of 17. That, along with Kotkaniemi and Stankoven taking advantage of a mistake and Slavin scoring with Seth Jarvis screening Thompson was the difference. Up next Game 2 is Thursday night in Washington before the series shifts to Raleigh, North Carolina, for 3 and 4. ___ AP NHL playoffs: and

Canadiens: The One That Got Away
There's no two ways about it, Brady Takchuk was one of the stars of Team USA obliteration of Finland. Once Mike Sullivan put him on a line with older brother Matthew and Jake Eichel, the line became unstoppable and produced three of the American's four goals in the final frame, leading them to a 6-1 win. What was painful wasn't seeing the fan favourite Finns be dismantled like that, it was the fact the younger Tkachuk held the scalpel. Back in 2018, the Montreal Canadiens had the third overall pick at the NHL draft and were in desperate need for a center. Then-GM Marc Bergevin decided to use the pick on pivot Jesperi Kotkaniemi, leaving Tkachuk available for the Ottawa Senators to pick. Then the Canadiens rushed Kotkaniemi to the NHL and essentially hindered his development. By the end of his three-year tenure with the Canadiens, he was a healthy scratch at times during the playoffs and not seeing eye-to-eye with the coach. It came as no surprised that he jumped on the over-inflated contract offered by the Carolina Hurricanes and he left Montreal without even thinking twice. Meanwhile, Tkachuk evolved every year with the Senators, putting up 393 points in 496 games, collecting 728 penalty minutes along the way and the captains' C. On Thursday night, seeing him take charge of the game putting up two goals and just leading his nation to a dominating performance, brought back memories of the 2018 draft. Tkachuk really is the one that got away and probably the worst decision of the Bergevin era. The fact Kotkaniemi didn't pan out and was lost for pretty much nothing in the 2021 Summer makes it even harder to get over. That being said a year later, at the 2019 draft, the Canadiens were able to draft Cole Caufield because nearly half the league passed on him, including the Florida Panthers at 13 who picked up Spencer Knight and Philadelphia at 14th who went for Cam York. Drafting really is complicated and is by no means an exact science, but nothing I write here can take away the pain of seeing the younger Takchuk shine like that.
