Midland Air & Space Port gears up for summer travel rush

MIDLAND, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- One of the busiest travel seasons of the year is just around the corner, and Midland International Air & Space Port wants to help ensure passengers are prepared. With school out and summer vacations beginning, airports across the country, including here in West Texas, are expected to see a significant increase in traffic. 'So, people are going to want to make sure they are giving themselves enough time to arrive at the airport, find a parking spot, get their bags checked, and get through the TSA security line,' said Nick Krakovec, deputy director of the City of Midland Department of Airports. 'That typical time frame is usually 90 minutes to two hours.' Giving yourself that extra time is critical, especially with more people traveling for both work and vacation. 'In the last couple of years, we have been seeing anywhere from 60 to 70 thousand people a month traveling in and out of the airport,' Krakovec said. 'Usually, the people traveling in are a similar number. We are proudly expecting that 70 to 75 thousand people travel out of the airport with similar numbers traveling in.' With those numbers continuing to rise, officials at Midland International Air & Space Port are working on improvements to help ease congestion. 'Now it's the addition of that third lane at the existing TSA checkpoint. There's been a lot of back-and-forth with TSA trying to get equipment and the approvals and staff needed for that,' Krakovec said. 'We are hopeful that is going to be a welcome addition for the people traveling in and out of Midland, especially with the Summer vacation and Holidays coming up. Having that extra lane means extra capacity for TSA staff. Which means shorter wait time for people trying to fly out of Midland.' Travelers are encouraged to check their airline for any potential delays or cancellations before heading to the airport. Officials also noted that additional parking lots have been added to ensure there are enough spaces to accommodate the summer travel surge. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
