John Krasinski thinks Fountain of Youth is better than Indiana Jones

John Krasinski believes 'Fountain of Youth' trumps 'Indiana Jones'. The 45-year-old actor plays Luke Purdue, the estranged brother of Charlotte Purdue (Natalie Portman) in 2025 American heist adventure film directed by Guy Ritchie, and he teams up with his sibling for a worldwide hunt to find the mythological fountain of youth in the flick styled like the 'Indiana Jones' franchise. Krasinski said the family aspect is what "drew me in" and put the flick "ahead" of the iconic films created by George Lucas. He told SFX magazine: "I think for me, it was really this relationship [that gave it] a different twist, instead of a whole romance thing at the centre of the move. "What I really liked was that family was this thing that we often forget about, and it might be the treasure that we're all really seeking in our lives. "So that was really the thing that drew me in, which Indy didn't have. So there! We're ahead of 'Indiana Jones' already! Please don't tell Harrison Ford that!" As well as being enticed by family being at the heart of the film, Krasinski said working with Ritchie was another factor in his decision to take on the role of Luke. The 'IF' actor explained: "I've been a huge Guy Ritchie fan forever. "I don't know if I've been on set with a director where it's his world in its entirety - and I mean that in the best way. "Though it may sound chaotic, and it does take a little time to understand the rules of how to go about starting every day with that off-the-cuff, kind of, writing, there is an energy to it that I've never experienced before. "This is one of those movies where you'll look back and go, 'I'm so glad I did this.'" The 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' star - who has Hazel, 10, and Violet, seven, with his actress wife Emily Blunt - laughed at the fact it's the first film that is appropriate for his young children to watch. He said: "My kids are 10 and about to be eight, and Guy just showed them the opening of the movie, and they were like, 'When's this coming out?' "I think they thought I was an accountant before. They can't watch 'A Quiet Place' or 'Jack Ryan'. So they're like, 'Where do you go every day?' "And now they know!"

Natalie Portman and John Krasinski embark on a globe-trotting adventure in ‘Fountain of Youth'

By LINDSEY BAHR The spirit of Indiana Jones is baked into the essence of the new movie 'Fountain of Youth.' This lighthearted, globe-trotting heist from Guy Ritchie, debuting on Apple TV+ on Friday, stars Natalie Portman and John Krasinski as estranged siblings attempting to piece together historical facts in hopes of finding the mythical spring. The quest takes them to far-flung places from Vienna to the pyramids, as they try to evade capture by the authorities and a shadowy operation intent on stopping the search. 'I've been looking to watch this movie for years,' Krasinski said in an interview with The Associated Press. 'This is the movie I pretended to be in when I was a kid. This is what got me into the business.' The film also stars Domnhall Gleeson as the wealthy businessman funding the operation and Eiza González as one of the protectors of the Fountain of Youth. ' Guy Ritchie gets to work with some of the best cast in the world,' said González, who has now worked with him three times. 'The biggest gift Guy has given me, besides the privilege of working with him, is working with them.' Gleeson, a newcomer to the world of Ritchie, was pretty sure that it was going to be as enjoyable as it looked. And he got a vote of confidence from his director. 'Guy basically said, if you're not having fun, then this is not going to work and so the idea is to turn up and have fun,' Gleeson said. There were a lot of things about 'Fountain of Youth' that piqued Portman's interest. The chance to work with Ritchie, Krasinski, and the rest of the cast, as well as the travel, but it also felt like something she could share with her own son and daughter. 'It's so rare to get to make a movie that has this scale and this scope of adventure that you can watch with your kids,' Portman said. 'I'm always looking for something that I can enjoy with my children.' Her character, Charlotte, is an art historian who had an adventuresome childhood with her explorer father and brother Luke (Krasinski) but has since settled for a more stable life. We meet her amid a contentious divorce and custody battle over her 12-year-old son, and she's not exactly pleased when Luke steals a piece of art from her gallery and attempts to recruit her for the bigger mission. But soon, she's in scuba gear hunting down a lost Rembrandt in the wreckage of the RMS Lusitania. 'I think that something we search for as adults is how to regain that youthful spirit, how to hold onto that youthful energy and freedom and wildness, even when having to move into some adult responsibilities,' said Portman, who, like her character is recently divorced. 'Maybe that can make you a better parent to have a little bit of that glint in your eye.' She and Krasinski, working together for the first time, fell into the sibling dynamics easily. 'These movies sort of live and die with the relationships,' Krasinski said. 'The sibling thing really only works if you're having genuine fun with the person and it can come off screen. And I laughed with her every single day. She's so funny.' Globe-trotting films aren't just travelogues for the audience, but their own sort of adventure for the cast and crew. This production earned their miles, skipping between the streets of Bangkok and Liverpool, the Austrian National Library in Vienna and Cairo to film at the great pyramids — where 'Fountain of Youth' became the first film of this scale to be granted the privilege to shoot action sequences there. 'It was really a pinch me kind of moment to be like, oh, those are the pyramids and we're just hanging out here and walking into them and filming in them,' Portman said. The big first was landing a Boeing Chinook CH47 helicopter in front of the Giza Plateau, and blowing up a jeep, all while the site remained open to tourists. 'With any luck, we didn't blow it for Hollywood going back there for somebody else,' Krasinski said. 'But if we did, at least we got to do it.' Most of the big action moments 'inside' the pyramids were saved for the safety of sets constructed at London's Leavesden Studio, where they also built the wreckage of the Lusitania in a water tank so big that it took two weeks to fill. 'Fountain of Youth' might seem like the type of movie that would be a natural fit for the big screen: A big budget, global adventure with major stars and sweeping vistas. While Krasinski champions movie theaters — at the time of the interview, he had a ticket to see 'Sinners' on IMAX the next day — he's also not feeling bittersweet that this one won't be playing at the multiplex. They all came into 'Fountain of Youth' knowing that it was a streaming-first endeavor. 'This was always going to be a streaming movie, so I didn't really think about it in terms of ... Would people want to see it in theaters because it was just one of those things,' Krasinski said. 'And I think that's the new reality. There are definitely movies that are being made for streaming, and there are movies being made for theatrical.' He added: 'It all depends on what the filmmaker's intent was, what the studio's intent and I think as long as those rules are laid out clearly in the beginning, I'm down for either one.' © Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. Long may he reign. John Krasinski is enjoying the 'peak' of his Sexiest Man Alive title.

A chance to make the reigning Sexiest Man Alive blush? We couldn't help ourselves. Krasinski is six months into his reign as People's annual titleholder. Like many of the leading men before him — Chris Evans! John Legend! Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson! — the actor sat for a photo shoot and interview, as is tradition. He gushed about his wife, Emily Blunt, and how he hoped the hunky honor would relieve him from household chores. I had to do a wellness check on Krasinski since his crowning in November. Why? Well, his Fountain of Youth costar Eiza González laughed that he's 'really suffering through' the press tour for their Apple TV+ film. "Every time people bring it up, he gets red!' she told Yahoo Entertainment when I broached the topic. It's clear why Krasinski was chosen. The magazine, which has been anointing Hollywood's leading men with the title since 1985, doesn't necessarily crown the biggest star of the year. Instead, their choices tend to skew more toward a person who has broad appeal to the masses. (Looking at you, People's Sexiest Man of 2017, Blake Shelton, and Paul Rudd, who was crowned in 2023.) In 2012, a People editor told USA Today the team looks at comments on their celebrity coverage throughout the year to guide their choice. Reporters also poll female stars about who should get the Sexiest Man Alive. Sure, looks are a factor, but it's more than that. Krasinski is well-liked by his peers. Both men and women enjoy his movies and TV shows. Fans want to date him, romantics ship his relationship with Blunt and people want to be his best friend. It's also worth mentioning that the magazine won't name someone who won't play ball (cough: Ryan Gosling) and they want a star who is comfortable "owning" the superlative. Enter the 45-year-old actor. Krasinski may not realize the universality of his appeal, though, or has nailed modesty (he's an actor, after all). He thought he was 'being punked' when he found out he nabbed the honor. 'That's not how I wake up, thinking, 'Is this the day that I'll be asked to be Sexiest Man Alive?' And yet it was the day you guys did it,' he said in the cover story. Don't be fooled, though. This isn't the first time Krasinski embraced his sexier side in print. He set the internet ablaze when, in 2015, his Men's Health photo shoot showed he's more than just sweet Jim from The Office. 'Funnyman John Krasinski Shows Off His New SEAL-Fit Body' was the headline of one article, which did just that as he posed in a black T-shirt. So it's no surprise then that Krasinski said he's actually "feeling pretty good" six months into his Sexiest Man Alive reign. "I mean, I'm at the peak now, right? So from here, it all goes downhill until I lose the crown," Krasinski said. "I'm going to enjoy this moment right now." González co-signs the title. "He's the best. I didn't have the pleasure of knowing him before. I met [his wife] Emily [Blunt] before, who's incredibly funny. He's just such a warm human being that in the first 10 minutes of being around him, he makes you feel so welcomed," she said. Krasinski and González's banter is on full display in Fountain of Youth. Director Guy Ritchie's family-friendly movie follows two estranged siblings (Krasinski and Natalie Portman) who reunite to go on a global heist to find the mythological Fountain of Youth. As their adventure takes them all around the world, González's character is hot on their heels to stop them from finding immortality. "When you have [John's] energy, it allows for really good banter,' she explained, 'and he comes up with great ideas." González also praised Krasinski's comedic skills, which he honed filming The Office for nearly a decade. "When you're improvising so much, that allows and gives you a whole other quality as an actor,' she said. "I was really happy to be around that energy." premieres on Apple TV+ on May 23.

This 'Fountain of Youth' stunt left Natalie Portman, John Krasinski 'genuinely' terrified

This 'Fountain of Youth' stunt left Natalie Portman, John Krasinski 'genuinely' terrified Show Caption Hide Caption John Krasinski, Natalie Portman talk 'Fountain of Youth' car chase John Krasinski, Natalie Portman reveal they were genuinely frightened while shooting car chase in 'Fountain of Youth' To find immortality, Natalie Portman and John Krasinski first had to survive a white-knuckle car chase. In director Guy Ritchie's 'Fountain of Youth' (streaming now on Apple TV+), a globetrotting adventure in the 'Indiana Jones' and 'National Treasure' mold, the two A-listers play estranged siblings seeking the titular mythical spring. Early in the process, their characters find themselves being pursued through London at high speeds by cop cars, with Krasinski behind the wheel of a slick Shelby Cobra. Well, not technically. He and Portman acted in a pod car built for close-ups while stunt drivers did all the heavy lifting with the actual muscle car seen in wide shots. 'The stunt guys were like, 'If you asked us to drive this (yourself), you would die. ... But the one you and Natalie are in, pffft, we've built it to be like a Volvo,' " Krasinski says. "And I was like, 'Great. That sounds like safety.' "But I will say all those reactions are genuine. No one told us how fast we were going to go.' Join our Watch Party! Sign up to receive USA TODAY's movie and TV recommendations right in your inbox Adds Portman: 'I definitely was wishing I could wear a helmet. I was genuinely just screaming my head off. It was crazy.' Both actors have played in franchise sandboxes before: Portman starred as Padmé Amidala in the 'Star Wars' prequels and appeared as Thor's love interest Jane Foster in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where 'A Quiet Place' mastermind Krasinski stopped by as Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four. But 'Fountain of Youth' offered the chance to be on the ground floor of a potential new series intended for families. 'It's really fun to come in and get to imagine these characters without inheriting a legacy of something,' Portman says. After his first costume fitting, Krasinski remembers calling his wife Emily Blunt while strolling through the production office. 'I went, 'This is huge!' ' he says. 'I was scared, and then as soon as we started, it almost felt like the gates were open for just real collaboration.' But Luke (Krasinski) and Charlotte Purdue (Portman), who enjoyed a life of adventure before going their separate ways after their father's death, are very clearly not on the same page in the early goings-on of 'Fountain of Youth.' She's a gallery curator in London when her art-thief older brother shows up and steals a painting. It's for a good cause, though. Luke has been hired by a tech billionaire (Domhnall Gleeson) to locate the Fountain of Youth, a legendary locale the siblings' dad always wanted to find, and hidden messages on the back of six masterpieces hold the key to getting there. Working with Ritchie 'definitely provided a lot of that dynamic of this brother who's a little wilder (and) the sister who's a little bit more sensible and responsible,' Portman says. 'And of course, the one who had an impact on both of them, this father that was extremely wild and adventurous. One has kind of followed in his path and the other has driven her personality in antithesis to her father." Luke brings out a less buttoned-up side of Charlotte, who's gone through a messy divorce and brings her 12-year-old son (Benjamin Chivers) on their adventure. And Charlotte constantly reminds Luke not to steal artifacts he doesn't need. One of Krasinski's favorite parts of the movie was 'this whole idea of touching it, but not taking,' he says. 'Fountain of Youth' digs into real history, and Portman learned about things she 'had never heard of before,' like the Wicked Bible, Rembrandt's copies of his own works, and masterpieces that sank with the torpedoed Lusitania in 1915. 'I was like, 'Wait, where's the Lusitania?!' ' she says, noting that screenwriter James Vanderbilt threw in a detail from his own family history. (The Purdues have to break into a waterproof safe that belonged to Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, the writer's real-life great-grandfather, who died aboard the ship.) What mythic locale or priceless artifact will the Purdues pursue next? 'Let's see if people want a sequel first,' Portman cracks. But Krasinski thinks there's a certain nostalgia factor that will bring youngsters to 'Fountain of Youth.' 'I just recently watched 'Back to the Future' for the first time with my oldest daughter, and you could just sense something in the room. There was a promise that was being made with that movie to her that she hadn't had in a long time, if ever – maybe the 'Harry Potter' movies or something,' Krasinski says. 'There was a superpower to those movies that we grew up with, and I hope we get to keep bringing them back. 'It's so hard to find something that we can all watch as a family where it's not too young for us, it's not too adult for them, and that everybody enjoys it. And this hopefully is one of them.'

John Krasinski Didn't Know Brother-in-Law Stanley Tucci Was His ‘Fountain of Youth' Co-Star Until Midway Through Filming

John Krasinski is once again channeling his inner action star, following up Jack Ryan with Apple TV+ adventure flick Fountain of Youth. The film follows Krasinski and Natalie Portman as estranged siblings who team up for a global heist to find the mythological Fountain of Youth. Adding to the family ties, Krasinski's brother-in-law Stanley Tucci — who is married to Emily Blunt's sister Felicity — also co-stars in the film, though that turned out to be a surprise to Krasinski himself. 'I didn't even know he was in the movie until [director] Guy Ritchie said, 'Yeah, Stanley's gonna be in tomorrow,' and I went, 'For what?' And he went, 'This movie,' and I went, 'What?' So that just goes to show you that they're in love and they kept me out of it.' Despite his experience with stunts, the movie also challenged him, as Krasinski recounted, 'Running for a moving train is something that I haven't done before and that was very real. And I love how Guy just sort of told me how it was going to go and he said, 'You're just going to run and jump on that train as it's moving,' and I went, 'Yeah.' And he just assumed I was going to do it, so that made me just do it.' Along with Tucci, the star-studded cast also includes Eiza González, Domhnall Gleeson and Arian Moayed. González echoed Krasinski's experience with the action scenes, noting, 'I had a lot of learning curves in this. I learned a lot of stick fighting, hand combat, muay thai; I really had to expand on different styles of fighting because every single location we really wanted to engage with the style and the visual stylistic sense of each city.'
