Russian journalist dies of wounds suffered in March in Ukraine war
Russian journalist dies of wounds suffered in March in Ukraine war A Russian journalist caught in a Ukrainian artillery strike last month died of his wounds in hospital, his publication said early on Thursday. Nikita Goldin, who worked for the military's Zvezda Television, was part of a group that came under attack in a Moscow-controlled part of Luhansk region in northeastern Ukraine on March 24. Six people died in the strike, including two other journalists and their driver. Goldin, who also wrote for the military daily Krasnaya Zvezda, was taken to a military hospital in Moscow, but died of his wounds nearly a month after the attack. Russia's Foreign Ministry accused Ukraine of deliberately targeting the journalists in the attack. Data provided earlier in the war by the Committee to Protect Journalists counted at least 15 journalists killed since Russia's February 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Nearly all of the Luhansk region has been captured by Russian forces as Moscow drives to take control of the broader eastern Donbas region, one of Ukraine's most industrialised areas. Russian army reports blasts at military depot near Moscow
The Russian army on Tuesday (April 22, 2025) reported blasts at a major military depot east of Moscow, saying it had caught fire due to 'safety violations'. 'As a result of a fire on the territory of a military unit in the Vladimir region, ammunition stored in a warehouse detonated,' the Defence Ministry said. Four people were wounded in the explosions at the site in Barsovo, the Vladimir region governor said on Telegram. Numerous unverified videos circulating on social media showed a massive fireball tearing through the sky with a loud, rattling blast, followed by thick plumes of smoke. The videos also showed emergency services vehicles racing through a city towards the site of the blast. 'According to preliminary information... the cause of the fire was a violation of safety standards in work with explosive materials,' the Defence Ministry added. A special commission had been set up to investigate the causes of the fire, it said. About 450 people from surrounding villages were evacuated as the rounds kept detonating, and an emergency was declared in the Kirzhach district of the Vladimir region, 130 kilometres (80 miles) northeast of the Russian capital. In the summer of 2022, five people were killed in a similar accident at the depot, according to the local authorities, and in March 2025, people from the village of Barsovo were evacuated due to a drone attack. According to a 2009 article in Krasnaya Zvezda, the official newspaper of the Russian army, the Barsovo depot was able to contain more than 250,000 tonnes of ammunition.

Putin spokesman says Trump's foreign policy 'largely coincides' with Russia's vision
Putin spokesman says Trump's foreign policy 'largely coincides' with Russia's vision Show Caption Hide Caption Trump says Zelenskyy is 'not ready for peace' after Oval clash President Donald Trump said President Zelenskyy is not ready for peace if America is involved." Zelenskyy says otherwise. WASHINGTON ― A spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin praised U.S. foreign policy under President Donald Trump, saying it "largely coincides" with Russia's vision in a reversal he said was previously "impossible to imagine." The comments from Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov come as Trump has upended the U.S. approach to Russia's war in Ukraine by holding peace negotiations with Russia, without representation from Ukraine or its European allies. A public spat between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy last Friday in the Oval Office raised doubts about continued U.S. financial support for Ukraine. "The new (U.S.) administration is rapidly changing all foreign policy configurations," Peskov said in an interview aired Sunday on Russian state media. "This largely coincides with our vision." More: Trump tells Zelenskyy to leave after Oval Office clash, mineral deal not signed Peskov conducted the interview on Wednesday, two days before a meeting between Zelenskyy and Trump at the White House unraveled, with Trump accusing the Ukrainian leader of wanting to start World War Three. Even before that, Trump has lashed out at Ukraine, blaming its leaders for Putin's invasion and occupation of their country. In additional remarks Monday, Reuters reported, Peskov said the clash at the White House "demonstrated how difficult it will be to reach a settlement trajectory around Ukraine ... The Kyiv regime and Zelenskyy do not want peace. They want the war to continue." Trump last Friday said Zelenskyy can return to the negotiating table "when he is ready for peace." After leaving the United States, Zelenskyy appeared Saturday with European leaders at a summit in London in a display of continued European support for Zelenskyy. More: U.S. support for Ukraine in doubt after Trump-Zelenskyy public brawl Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also heaped praise on Trump, calling his efforts to end the war in Ukraine "common sense" as he criticized European countries that have rallied around Ukraine. "Donald Trump is a pragmatist," Lavrov told the Russian military newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda, according to a transcript released by the Foreign Ministry. "His slogan is common sense. It means, as everyone can see, a shift to a different way of doing things." Some supporters of Ukraine have been just as critical of Trump's turn. "President Trump and his administration continue to embarrass America on the world stage," said House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., in a statement after the White House meeting with Zelenskyy. "Today's White House meeting with the President of Ukraine was appalling and will only serve to further embolden Vladimir Putin, a brutal dictator. The United States must not reward Russian aggression and continue to appease Putin." Contributing Reuters: Reach Joey Garrison on X @joeygarrison.

Kremlin says US foreign policy pivot ‘largely coincides with our vision'
The Kremlin said on Sunday that the dramatic pivot in the foreign policy of the US 'largely' coincides with its own vision, with Donald Trump described as having 'common sense'. The US president, who has often said he respects his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, has worked to build ties with Moscow since taking office in January, including twice siding with Russia in UN votes. 'The new administration is rapidly changing all foreign policy configurations,' the Kremlin spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, told a reporter from state television. 'This largely coincides with our vision.' Peskov added: 'There is a long way to go, because there is huge damage to the whole complex of bilateral relations. But if the political will of the two leaders, President Putin and President Trump, is maintained, this path can be quite quick and successful.' Peskov made the comments on Wednesday but they were only made public on Sunday, two days after Trump defended Putin during a fiery clash with the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, at the Oval Office on Friday. Trump has upended US policy on Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which marked its third anniversary last week. On Friday, he told Zelenskyy he was losing the war and had 'no cards' to play. Russia's foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, also praised Trump for his 'commonsense' aim to end the war in Ukraine and accused European powers, who have rallied to support Zelenskyy and are meeting with the Ukrainian leader at a summit in London on Sunday, of seeking to prolong the conflict. Trump 'is a pragmatist', Lavrov told the Russian military newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda, according to a transcript released by the foreign ministry. 'His slogan is common sense. It means, as everyone can see, a shift to a different way of doing things.' Lavrov said the US still sought to be the world's most powerful country and that Washington and Moscow would never see eye to eye on everything, but they could resort to pragmatism when interests coincided. The Kremlin often rebuked the former US president Joe Biden, accusing him in November of 'adding fuel to the fire' by allowing Kyiv to use long-range missiles for strikes against Russia. Lavrov said that after Biden's administration, 'people have come in who want to be guided by common sense. They say directly that they want to end all wars, they want peace. And who demands a 'continuation of the banquet' in the form of a war? Europe.' But, Lavrov said, 'the goal is still Maga (Make America Great Again)', referring to Trump's political slogan. 'This gives a lively, human character to politics. That's why it's interesting to work with him.'

Russia praises Trump and slams Europe for being the 'crucible of war'
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Sunday praised US President Donald Trump's "common sense" aim to end the war in Ukraine, but accused the European powers which have rallied around Kyiv of seeking to prolong the conflict. Lavrov said the United States still wanted to be the world's most powerful country and that Washington and Moscow would never see eye to eye on everything, but that they had agreed to be pragmatic when interests coincided. "Donald Trump is a pragmatist," Lavrov told the Russian military newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda, according to a transcript released by the Foreign Ministry. "His slogan is common sense. It means, as everyone can see, a shift to a different way of doing things." "But the goal is still MAGA (Make America Great Again)," Lavrov said, referring to Trump's political slogan. "This gives a lively, human character to politics. That's why it's interesting to work with him." Russia attacked Ukraine in 2022 with thousands of troops, triggering the biggest confrontation between Russia and the West since the depths of the Cold War. The conflict in eastern Ukraine began in 2014 after a pro-Russian president was toppled in Ukraine's Maidan Revolution and Russia annexed Crimea, with Russian-backed separatist forces fighting Ukraine's armed forces. The West and Ukraine describe the 2022 attack as an imperial-style land grab by President Vladimir Putin and Kyiv has vowed to defeat Russia on the battlefield, though Russian forces control nearly one-fifth of Ukraine. Putin casts the conflict in Ukraine as part of an existential battle with a declining and decadent West which he says humiliated Russia after the Berlin Wall fell in 1989 by enlarging the Nato military alliance and encroaching on what he considers Moscow's sphere of influence, including Ukraine. Trump has upended US policy on the Ukraine war. On Friday, he and Vice President JD Vance clashed with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in the Oval Office. Trump accused Zelensky of disrespecting the United States, said he was losing the war and had no cards left. European leaders leapt to Zelensky's defence. But Lavrov criticised Europe, saying that for the past 500 years Europe had been the crucible of "all the tragedies of the world" including colonisation, wars, crusaders, the Crimean War, Napoleon Bonaparte, World War I and Adolf Hitler. "And now, after (former US President Joe) Biden's term, people have come in who want to be guided by common sense. They say directly that they want to end all wars, they want peace," Lavrov said. "And who demands a 'continuation of the banquet' in the form of a war? Europe." Lavrov also dismissed ideas for sending in a contingent of European peacekeepers and said Russia had no trust in Ukraine after the collapse of the Minsk agreements, which were designed to end a separatist war by Russian speakers in eastern Ukraine. Europeans, Lavrov said, could not explain what rights Russian speakers would have under the European peacekeeper plans, adding that Russia did not like the idea of Europeans propping up Zelensky. "Now they also want to prop him up with their bayonets in the form of peacekeeping units. This will mean that the root causes will not disappear," Lavrov said.
