City of New Orleans preparing for Super Bowl-like approach to Mardi Gras
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The City of New Orleans is preparing for its first Carnival season following the New Year's terror attack and on the heels of Super Bowl LIX. From Feb. 21 through March 4, there will be enhanced security throughout the city, from National Guard members to bomb dogs, and the city's emergency operations center will be open 24-7. 'This is one of our first moments in our history to where Mardi Gras is a SEAR-1-rated event, and so, that means additional resources and assets at the federal level,' said New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell. New this year: vehicle mitigation measure, specifically a serpentine course, will be implemented along the non-parade side of St. Charles Avenue.'A serpentine means you're going to weave it like a snake,' explained NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick. 'So, it's weaving around barricades that will slow anybody down who thinks they're going to use a vehicle as a weapon.'In the French Quarter, Louisiana State Police will set up an enhanced security zone. 'It will span from Canal Street to St. Anne, Bourbon, including Royal and Dauphine streets,' said LSP Superintendent Col. Robert Hodges. 'Within the zone, no ice chests or coolers will be allowed.'Coolers are permitted along the parade route, but they cannot be left unattended. Department of Homeland Security top official talks New Orleans Mardi Gras safety 'If you do see an unattended cooler, and you're getting that sense that there's nobody there, please report that immediately to the NOPD non-emergency line at 504-821-2111,' said NOHSEP Director Collin Arnold. Last week, the New Orleans City Council passed a resolution, recognizing that the NOPD may have to prioritize public safety over the confiscation of prohibited items. According to Kirkpatrick, there's time for both.'Please don't put your police department in a position to enforce,' Kirkpatrick said. 'It will be your choice.' If you see something, say something. Mandeville bans parking along Krewe of Eve parade route, safety enhancements
MANDEVILLE, La. (WGNO) — Barricades line the street in Mandeville ahead of the Krewe of Eve parade. Yet there are also friendly signs reminding people that all parking along the parade route, in both directions, is banned. 'We've been contemplating this for a long time, obviously the catalyst for this was what happened on Bourbon Street,' said Mandeville Police Chief Todd Schliem. Department of Homeland Security top official talks New Orleans Mardi Gras safety Schliem says just as New Orleans has reassessed their security measures, so has Mandeville. He explained federal intel briefings have described possible terrorist targets. 'Nothing says the city of Mandeville. But when you read these briefs, what they describe is exactly what we have here. One of our biggest vulnerabilities is parking along the parade route,' said Schliem. Though he admits it won't completely remove the possibility of an attack, it would limit the potential damage. 'Putting a vehicle on the parade route. And if they got access to just basically pull into the parade route, they could drive on unchallenged for as long as they wanted, or people have an ied. Can you imagine what it would be if they packed an RV full,' said Schliem. Mandeville resident Devon Norred understands it's a deviation from tradition, but necessary for safety. Want to ride the Scrim the dog bike in the Krewe of Barkus parade? 'I mean, if you got a thousand cars out here, you can't check every single car that's out here. I mean, there could be a bomb in any of them. I'm not saying there is, but just, there's like a protocol, I don't think it's a big deal,' said Norred. Krewe of Eve may be a little different this year, but talks of this being set in stone are on hold. 'I'm not saying this is permanent. I'm not saying it. There won't be modifications, but we are going to bring all parties involved in it, get as much input as we can right after Mardi Gras, and we'll start planning from there,' said Schliem. The Krewe of Eve is set to kick off Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. Schliem is asking everyone to come out and have a great hosts Black History Month event amid DEI crackdown Federal judge denies BRPD officers' request to dismiss 'Brave Cave' lawsuit Speaker Johnson discourages DOGE stimulus checks idea Florida sues Target for 'defrauding investors' by selling LGBTQ+ Pride merchandise Mandeville bans parking along Krewe of Eve parade route, safety enhancements Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
