SIU investigating two men dead in Burlington home
Two men are dead, including a 28-year-old who died after stabbing himself when police tried to arrest him inside a Burlington home overnight. Halton police are investing the death of the man in his 50s found a little after 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday inside a home on Cornerstone Drive, near Dundas Street and Appleby Line. A woman, also in her 50s, suffered non-life threatening injuries and has been treated and released from hospital. Police tape surrounds a home on Cornerstone Drive in Burlington after two people died inside the house early Tuesday. The 28-year-old's death is being investigated by the Special Investigations Unit, an arm's-length agency that probes incidents involving police in Ontario in which someone is killed. At the scene, Tuesday SIU spokesperson Kristy Denette said she could not confirm this was a case of murder-suicide, adding that was a question for Halton police. However, she confirmed the man in his 50s was deceased when officers arrived. Halton police and SIU are investigating the deaths of two men, including one from self-inflicted wounds, in a Burlington house. Police were called to the home on a busy residential street in the Alton Village neighbourhood around 12:30 a.m. for an unknown disturbance. Denette said there was a 911 call in which dispatch could hear voices in the background, but no one was on the phone. So, officers initially didn't know what they were responding to. When police arrived they found the dead man, and the 28-year-old ran up the stairs, she said. Police chased him to try to arrest him, including attempting to use a Taser. It's unclear if it connected, but spent Taser wires were found at the scene. The 28-year-old's self-inflicted stabbing happened 'during the course of the arrest,' she said. But details and the exact sequence of events remain under investigation. Officers attempted life-saving measures and paramedics were called, but the 28-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. Denette could not say how long police were in the home before the 28-year-old stabbed himself, or before paramedics were called. A knife has been recovered. According to neighbours, a couple and their adult son live in the home. However, Denette would only confirm that the people were known to each other. Const. Jeff Dillon, spokesperson for Halton police, confirmed that officers responded to reports of a disturbance at the Cornerstone Drive house around 12:30 a.m. and, when officers arrived, they found one male deceased. 'An interaction occurred between officers and a second male which resulted in the SIU invoking its mandate,' he said, adding that the second man is also deceased. Halton police said there is no risk to public safety and directed all other questions to the SIU. On Tuesday, the scene remained taped-off by police, with both police and SIU on scene. Denette said forensic investigators were on scene and the SIU was also speaking with witnesses. Five witness officers and two subject officers have been designated. Create Account Around 12:30 a.m., a number of 911 calls were received from a residence on Cornerstone Dr. in relation to an unknown disturbance. Halton officers responded to the home and a 28-year-old man fled upstairs. 'At that time, the man was found with a serious, self-inflected wound,' SIU spokesperson Kristy Denette said. 'There was an arrest that was attempted to be made, and then following that there were life-saving measures that were attempted.' Officers called EMS but the man died at the scene. Denette says his wounds 'were believed to have been caused by a knife.' She said the SIU 'uncovered evidence of a conducted energy weapon' (Taser) and are interviewing to find out how it was used. 'Early information that's been provided to us is that there was a struggle between the male upstairs with police and there would have been a brief interaction,' she added. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Another man was located dead in the home and a woman was transported to hospital with non-serious injuries and has since been released. Denette said both were in their 50s. Denette wouldn't confirm if this was a family involved but added 'these individuals are known to each other,' and an autopsy on the older male would be conducted Tuesday or Thursday. 'The focus of the SIU investigation is the death of the 28-year-old man,' she confirmed. 'Halton police is conducting a parallel criminal investigation into the fatality of the other individual and also the injuries that were inflicted upon the female.' Anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, is asked to contact the lead SIU investigator at 1-800-787-8529. jstevenson@ World Canada Wrestling Sunshine Girls Olympics
