New Nuggets coach David Adelman wants his team in tip-top condition and open to ideas
DENVER (AP) — Jamal Murray was located in the back of the room and so he heard the message first-hand from new Denver Nuggets coach David Adelman. Same with Julian Strawther, who took a seat in the front row. For the players not in attendance at Adelman's introductory news conference Wednesday, a quick recap: Adelman wants everyone in even better condition and open to new ideas come training camp. Because the Western Conference won't be getting any easier, Adelman insisted. It's up to the Nuggets to adjust behind a roster that revolves around three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic. Adelman wants his players to have a big voice, too, just like they did after he took over following the firing of coach Michael Malone and general manager Calvin Booth with three games left in the regular season. "New ideas are good ideas,' Adelman said. 'I have to give them something to come back to that excites them." Adelman earned the promotion from interim to full-time head coach after a postseason run that saw the Nuggets get to a Game 7 against Oklahoma City in the second round before being knocked out of the playoffs. This with a thin bench and an injury-hampered starting five. Now, the work begins to put his own stamp on directing the Nuggets. He's gathered a wealth of knowledge through an array of NBA coaching mentors such as his father Rick Adelman, Sam Mitchell, Frank Vogel, the late Flip Saunders and, of course, Malone. 'Very prepared,' Adelman said of his level of readiness. "When you're around those people and you see how they run their business and their process, it's kind of a cheat code." 'Teams that get off to great starts usually at the end of the year have the best chance of being healthy in these big games,' explained Adelman, who's working on rounding out his coaching staff. 'But, yeah, that will be the expectation to come back in much better shape." One of the areas the Nuggets aim to address in the offseason is depth. The Nuggets ran out of steam in the Thunder series after beating the Los Angeles Clippers in seven games to advance out of the first round. 'Can they achieve that (championship goal) as currently constructed? I think the answer, as (Jokic) said after the playoffs, and it was obviously no," Kroenke Sports & Entertainment vice chairman Josh Kroenke said. "So we need to take a hard look at how we can raise our ceiling going forward, whether that's internally or externally. 'If you look at the teams still playing ... with a little bit of help, maybe a little bit of luck, maybe it could be us. But it's not. We're very conscious of that and how we need to go about improving.' Kroenke shocked the league last month when he fired Malone, the winningest coach in franchise history, and Booth after they helped bring home the franchise's first NBA title in 2023. It was Kroenke's way to rejuvenate the team's energy heading into the postseason. Next up for Kroenke, hiring a new GM. For now, Ben Tenzer is overseeing the role on an interim basis. The plan, Kroenke said, is to bring bring Adelman into the GM process at some point. 'The input will be relatively minimal," Kroenke said, "because what I'll be looking for is cohesion between those two." Added Adelman of the GM: "This business is about cohesion. It's all about just moving forward and winning. That's it. It's not about finding your best friend.' The Nuggets don't have a pick in the upcoming NBA draft. It may prove challenging to add depth without breaking up the core of Jokic, Murray, Aaron Gordon, Michael Porter Jr. and Christian Braun. That's where Denver's youth factors in and improvement from the likes of Strawther, Peyton Watson, Jalen Pickett and DaRon Holmes II, a first-round selection last year who tore an Achilles tendon in NBA Summer League. 'We're hungry to get better,' Strawther said. 'It's all fuel to the fire." As for the style of play, Adelman will add some wrinkles but defense will always be an important principle. 'We have to get back to being an execution-based team," Adelman said. "If that takes away some of our pace numbers, or whatever the analytics want to say, I think that's OK if it wins you a game in May, as opposed to playing a game in December. 'The majority of the time, if you want to win big, you've got to play slow. You've got to be efficient. You've got to be clean. So that will be things we'll talk about throughout the summer, going to training camp." ___

Rams Owner Plots Major TV and Film Production Facility at Hollywood Park
Rams owner Stan Kroenke is looking to step into Hollywood, with the construction of a studio and production facility. Hollywood Park Studios will initially serve as the temporary hub for broadcasters that have acquired the rights to cover the 2028 Olympics, Kroenke's company announced Tuesday. After the summer games, it will be made available for film and TV production as part of a broader vision to transform the property into a media, entertainment and technology campus. The first phase of construction for Hollywood Park Studios calls for five 18,000 square foot soundstages, two of which will open to a single stage double that size, across 12 acres. It will also feature a three-story 80,000 square foot office building to support production and postproduction services, as well as some bells and whistles to support operations, including a 1,100 car capacity parking structure and garage that can accommodate sixty trailers. Depending on demand, as many as 20 soundstages and an additional 200,000 square feet of office space will be built. Kroenke's company joins a spate of private equity and real estate firms that rapidly acquired, constructed and expanded stage facilities before the strikes, betting on continuing demand for such space. This includes BARDAS Investment Group and Bain Capital Real Estate, which announced in 2022 a $600 million redevelopment of the former Television Center. Amid an increasingly crowded market of soundstage operators, a snapshot of production levels in Los Angeles showed a steep decline in stage occupancy over the past two years, highlighting the plunge in filming in the region, according to an April FilmLA report. Seventeen studios that operate the majority of stages in L.A. posted average occupancy rates of 63 percent last year, down from 69 percent in 2023. The figures mark a dramatic departure from the 93.5 percent rate that studios reported their stages were used from 2016 to 2022. By Kroenke's thinking, media and sports are increasingly converging as entertainment distribution expands through multiple mediums. 'The vision for Hollywood Park has always been to build a city within a city combining media, entertainment and technology that will transform the greater Los Angeles area,' Kroenke said in a statement. Beyond 2028, he added that the property will be 'welcome a new industry to our live, work, play destination and bring a little bit of Hollywood to Hollywood Park.' Hollywood Park Studios is a part of master development plans for the 300-acre mixed use property, which is anchored by SoFi Stadium, YouTube Theater and the NFL Media office building. It includes apartments, shops, restaurants and a movie theater, with the construction of a $300 million luxury hotel intended to house visiting teams — and possibly talent who may be filming at the nearby production campus — underway. Competing regions, including the U.K., New York, Georgia and Ontario, have more than doubled their stage-based production capacity over the past five years. L.A., which has an estimated 8 million square feet of production space and 13 planned studio projects in the pipeline, maintains an infrastructure advantage, but the decline in production has made it more challenging to fill vacancies. Rams Owner Stan Kroenke to Develop Inglewood Soundstage Facility
Los Angeles Rams owner Stan Kroenke is spearheading the construction of a new soundstage facility at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, with plans to have it ready in time for the 2028 Olympics to serve as the event's International Broadcast Center. Hollywood Park Studios, which will be located adjacent to Kroenke's SoFi Stadium, will begin with a first phase construction of five 18,000-square-foot soundstages along with a three-story, 80,000-square-foot office building to support stage, production and post-production activities. Additional phases allow for the construction of up to 20 build-to-suit stages and an additional 200,000-square-feet of related office space with additional structured parking. For the Olympics, Hollywood Park Studios will host hundreds of global broadcasters that have media rights to the Games and will offer broadcasters ample space for offices, studios and control rooms. 'LA28 is proud to be the inaugural tenant of this new state-of-the-art studio in the heart of Inglewood, a key Venue City for the 2028 Games,' LA28 chief executive officer Reynold Hoover said. But it also comes as FilmLA reports that 63% of LA County's soundstages are occupied, down from the 93% average recorded from 2016-2022. California lawmakers are hoping that an expansion of the state's production tax incentive will reverse the decline in local productions brought by a mix of the 2023 strikes, significant competition from production hubs in other states and countries and the downturn in production greenlights as studios seek to keep costs down. Olympics broadcast center and movie studio coming to Hollywood Park
Rams owner Stan Kroenke will build a movie studio next to SoFi Stadium in Inglewood that will serve as the international broadcast center for the 2028 Olympic Games. Construction will start by summer on the studio and production facility that will house hundreds of broadcasters from around the world that have acquired rights to cover the Summer Games in Los Angeles, Kroenke's company said Tuesday. After the Games, the facility known as Hollywood Park Studios will be used to make movies, television shows and other productions and perhaps host live broadcasts. The development is part of Hollywood Park, a multibillion-dollar complex built on the site of a former horse racing track also known as Hollywood Park that includes the stadium, apartments, theaters, offices, shops and restaurants. A luxury hotel is under construction there, and more development including a grocery store and medical offices is being considered. Kroenke's organization hopes that attention from the Olympics will boost Hollywood Park Studios' appeal as a future entertainment production center. "We want it to be recognized around the world," said Alan Bornstein, who is overseeing development of the studio for Kroenke. Read more: New hotel at SoFi Stadium to cater to athletes and fans The studio is part of Hollywood Park's master development plan focusing on media, entertainment and technology, Bornstein said, anchored by SoFi Stadium, YouTube Theater and the NFL Media office building. "There has been an increasing convergence of media and technology and sports, all under the notion of entertainment that is now distributed in in multiple channels," Bornstein said, "whether it's through streaming or whether through broadcast television or movies in theaters," The first phase of Hollywood Park Studios will occupy 12 acres and will consist of five soundstages, each 18,000 square feet, two of which may be opened to a single 36,000-square-foot stage. The complex will have a three-story, 80,000-square-foot office building to support stage, production and postproduction activities. The studios will have a dedicated open base camp where trucks, equipment and actors' trailers could be placed, along with a parking structure for 1,100 cars. Future development could include as many as 20 stages and 200,000 square feet of related office space. The additional stages would be built to suit for future tenants as demand emerges, Bornstein said, who declined to estimate how much the studio complex will cost. Although demand for soundstages outstripped supply a few years ago, production has recently slowed and dampened the current need for them. Last year, the average annual occupancy rate dropped to 63%, a further indication of Hollywood's sustained production slowdown, according to a recent report by FilmLA, a nonprofit organization that tracks on-location shoot days in the Greater Los Angeles area. That was a decline from 2023, which saw an average regional occupancy rate of 69%. That was the year when dual strikes by writers and actors crippled the local production economy for months. The foray into Hollywood-level production facilities is part of Kroenke's goal to combine sports, entertainment and media from around the world, Bornstein said. In addition to the Rams, Kroenke is owner of the Denver Nuggets basketball team, the Colorado Avalanche hockey team, the Colorado Rapids soccer team, the Colorado Mammoth lacrosse team and Arsenal Football Club, the Premier League soccer team based in London. SoFi Stadium, where the Chargers also play football, will be converted into the largest Olympic swimming venue in history during the Games in 2028. It will host the Olympic opening ceremony with the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, as well as the opening ceremony for the Paralympic Games. Kroenke is also a major real estate developer and landlord. The 300-acre Hollywood Park project is one of the largest mixed-use developments under construction in the western United States. SoFi Stadium alone cost $5 billion to build. It could cost more than the total price of Hollywood Park, which has been valued by outside observers at more than $10 billion. Creating a second epicenter in Woodland Hills allows the Rams to significantly increase the size of their footprint in the Southern California market. 'When you're looking to do a practice facility, you don't need to be right in the middle of everything, and typically that real estate is very expensive,' Kroenke told The Times. 'We built an identity in the Valley, with Cal Lutheran, and a lot of our players and families are up there. Our experience was really good.' Architecture firm Gensler spearheaded the design for the Warner Center headquarters and Hollywood Park Studios. Clayco will be the general contractor for the studio, with Pacific Edge acting as project manager. Financing was arranged by Guggenheim Investments.
